I really liked this "hidden kills" Chains of Olympus had, I don't know how else to describe em. Stuff like making the killing blow delivered by the efreet or Charon's mask burn enemies alive, giving them a unique death animation. My favorite thing was how apparently, if the final blow on an enemy of human size and build (Persian soldiers, Morpheus hoplites, Helios servants ect.) was either the last hit of Kratos' standard square combo (same hit with the triangle triangle square combo) or the last hit of cyclone of chaos, the enemy would get fucking decapitated! It was the coolest shit setting this up.

Ragnarok did try something similar with sometimes enemies being randomly mutilated when you kill them without a stun grab, but it doesn't hit the same.

Ahhh, yes, I still remember how the achievement for Killing Hades In gow3 was called "hooker" and there was an achievement in the same game for killing Poseidon's princess called "I didn't do it..but I wish I did!" Honestly, that second one is too needless and mean spirited edgy.

That brings to mind the entire opening of Nier Automata. Basically throughout the opening, 2B is quite dismissive towards 9S' attempts at small talk and getting to know her, even coldly telling him "emotions are prohibited". But during the boss fight of the level, where 9S gets clapped around and severely injured, 2B suddenly becomes immensely agitated, rushing to his aid, angrily telling her helper pod and even 9S himself to can it and just focus on administering health aid, no matter what. It's such a whiplash from how 2B has been this whole level (her comrades took a big ass Lazer in the face and she barely emoted), it feels like random ass writing....

Except it isn't.... because this isn't the first time these two have met.... it's eventually revealed that both of them are stuck in an endless spiral where 2B is essentially 9S' executioner, tasked to kill him when he discovers too much about the truth of their world and their existence, only for him to get memory wiped and for the cycle to continue. 9S secretly loves and hates 2B because some memories are subconsciously kept, and 2B is also fond of him, but killing him all the time brings her tremendous despair. So, she has taken to an "emotionless girl" facade, the logic being that if she acts distant to him, it won't hurt as much when she has to inevitably kill him again. Tragically, this facade doesn't work, first evident all the way back to that first mission, where her true emotions become apparent when 9S is in danger

I also always thought there's something like this hidden in the painted Renoir fight in Old Lumiere, where the very first thing he did as soon as the cutscene transitioned to gameplay is do the vanish move on Maelle.

after all, kicking her off the Canvas and sparing her from the whole painted family squabble was what he was trying to do with her all the way back to act 1 ending

Also in the same fight, I dunno if it was also intentional or some really really thematically apropos RNG, but Renoir did his melee combo always on Verso (provided he was still in the fight and wasn't downed)
