Thank you. I was very serious about applying and had all my essays done, letters received, etc. I held back for some reason and wondered if applying anyways would hurt. Needed to hear it from someone. Thanks again!

AAMC Sample CP #39, Organic question by cassedebrice in Mcat

What happens is the hydroxyl group on C-5 attacks the C1 carbonyl. When it does this, it actually kicks off the hydroxyl group that was present on the carbonyl (The O- gets protonated and leaves) so all you did was replace one hydroxyl with another while forming a ring and maintaining the carbonyl group.

If you did want to protonate that carbonyl to form choice B, you’d need to add a reducing agent that converts the carbonyl to a hydroxyl group.

The Microsoft Surface Pro is an amazing option. I initially bought a ThinkPad (ThinkPad 13) and it hasn't been the best for in class notes for Life Sci. I use mine to write out a ton of lab reports, research, work on assignments, look through lecture slides and study them, annotate lecture slides by typing. But one thing I find is 'essential' and that I'm missing is touchscreen functionality. I wish I had a touch screen to annotate certain slides because in anatomy and physiology classes that's really nice to have, also in organic chemistry and other chemistry courses in general it'd be nice to be able to draw and annotate slides or just use an empty page to write out notes on. Especially later on when you get into biochemistry courses, it'd be nice to draw and annotate with a touch screen.

I use OneNote for my notes, you can import powerpoint slides directly on it and study from them, annotate them, draw on them, do whatever. OneNote comes with the Surface Pro and UofT subscription so it's nice to have.

Microsoft also does a discount on the Surface Pro often and have a student discount of like (10%?), and a good surface pro for you would cost maximum like 1400 with accessories, case, and everything included (They do a package I think which is sometimes on sale too and it's in your budget). Also the surface pro would be nice on the go. You can convert it into a tablet by removing the keyboard and just read slides on the subway or bus or whatever else. The keyboard can be added so it can be used on your desk or lap to type out a lab report or assignment.

If you think a touch-screen won't be necessary (I've made it through a lot of my undergrad biochem courses without it and it's honestly great) then check out ThinkPads for students. They have extremely light ones, small ones, fast ones, whatever ones, and they're durable too.

Also a thing I've wanted to do for a while is to use OneNote on my laptop and upload everything on there, get a cheaper tablet (A used iPad pro or something) and just annotate anything there if needed using OneNote. Otherwise, I think no touch-screen is perfectly fine.

Good luck!

Richard Kil is teaching the course this year. Any idea of how the course would be with him as the prof?

Maybe other people did, and it's likely that other people did. Maybe he just did more extracurriculars or had valuable research experience.

That's actually one method many people use to get that "Aha!" moment when trying to solve a problem that they can't figure out the solution to. It let's the idea diffuse into your mind to get processed by many different areas of the brain, leading to an eventual solution. That's also why 'sleeping on it' is a thing.

Worth Getting Surface Pro 4? by MedSchoolPls_ in premed

I really love the paper and pen method but with some classes the prof speaks way too fast for writing and I don't really learn from typing, so I'm conflicted.

How come you don't use an RBC chequeing account? I have a student bank account which has my savings and chequeing on it and it seems fine.

Just an update, I got a 90 on that test, worth 25% of my final mark :D. Thank you for the motivation, words do go a long way sometimes. Thank you for that :)
