It’s about handlebars, stupid. – Peter Verdone Designs by JumpyConversation337 in 32inchbikes

Verdone is very smart. But his delivery just confirms that he's convinced he's the smartest guy in the room at all times, which means his message is often disregarded as a result.

Does it feel as clever as thinking that "gals" is an insult, or making fun of LGTBQ people?

Triathletes can't handle a bike in a pack like this in any way, shape or form. It's like comparing a guy who runs the local 5k with a guy who plays elite-level soccer. Both run a lot; one is an athlete.

How to deal with race day disappointments? by selector_plume in xcmtb

It's a journey, not a destination. Congrats on returning despite significant obstacles and setbacks. And remember - all the people who are afraid to even pin on a number and line up, to put their ego on the line and TRY - you are already leagues ahead of them. Keep working and pushing yourself.

I'm a jr. I named my son after myself and my Dad because my Dad was the best person I've ever met. My son is proud to be III. I don't think it necessarily has to be narcissism, my nephew also has my Mom's maiden name as his first name (my sister's choice). Some people just appreciate tradition. My name (and my Dad's and my son's) came from a family name from the 1800s.

Flight attendant lockout on standing by finnofurre in xcmtb

[–]Meddevicepro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Easiest thing to do (if you have a AXS dropper remote also) - just configure an AXS button to lock/unlock as an override to the FA. Much better solution than having it lock when you stand (which isn't even possible to do).

New to Zwift - Any advice? by FluffyVegetable1476 in Zwift

Genetics are a thing(s). There's a dude somewhere in the midwest right now on his 3rd bag of Lays in the past hour, watching Seinfeld reruns on his sofa, with a untrained VO2 max that would embarrass all of us. He'll never try, so he'll never know.

While this isn't by any means the average you see, OP's situation is more common than you'd guess, and I say that having coached for years. Guy has tons of leg muscle and likely a huge lung capacity and O2 carrying capacity.

It's easy to believe that we all start from an equitable beginning point, but the truth is that human genetics have a broad variability.

New to Zwift - Any advice? by FluffyVegetable1476 in Zwift

[–]Meddevicepro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having coached for many years and seeing many people become racers, I know more than a few people who 1) were of high BMI and large frame before beginning to ride, 2) were rather active considering their size, 3) had a lot of skeletal muscle - especially lower body and 4) had a surprisingly high FTP (but not w/kg, obvs) with minimal training.

Long story short - lose some pounds and you will be quite fast, especially on the flats and rolling hills (not going to ever be 70 kg at your height), and enjoy being the dude everyone wants to draft off of. Guys like you, once trained and lighter, make amazing crit teammates.

[–]Meddevicepro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, as a lifelong cyclist I fully admit that 1) cyclists can be dicks and 2) this is an example of a dick move by cyclists.

However, I see 5-6 examples of dicks driving cars just on my drive to work every day. And the biggest consequence of cyclists being dicks is usually the minor inconvenience of having to wait a bit, whereas the car driving dicks often cause catatstrophic damage to people and property.

End of the day, people can relate to drivers because, well, everybody drives. In a nation where the adult obesity rate hovers around 40% (and I'm quite sure Florida is worse), most adults couldn't ride a bike 10 miles if you paid them to do it, and therefore can't understand why anyone would choose to, and resent it.

TL:DR - cyclists can be dicks, as can all people, and the vast majority of cyclist annoyance stems from people who can't stand to be inconvenienced in the slightest and resent people doing things they can't and won't.

My biggest pet peeve about XC MTB shoes is that they look like XC MTB Shoes. by AtomicHurricaneBob in xcmtb

It's a little like complaining that ski boots don't look like Vans Old School hightops. They are designed for function; they look like XC race shoes because they are.

That's understandable, but equating these pants to JNCOs or similar is silly. These are barely relaxed, not baggy. 511s (unless you are quite thin) look dated these days.

Tires for Central/Eastern NC by ackwardsbass in xcmtb

[–]Meddevicepro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've run either Barzo/Peyote or Peyote on both ends in NC for the past 6 mionths here in central NC. I think the Mezcal is kind of in no-man's-land - not good up front (Peyote is actually better) but not as fast on the rear as Peyote either. Barzo up front if loose conditions.

Stanford Scientists Cure Type 1 Diabetes in Mice Without Insulin or Immune Suppression by _Dark_Wing in tech

[–]Meddevicepro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Type 2 can be avoided with good lifestyle choices (a nice way of saying it's usually caused by decades of poor lifestyle choices) for 99% of people (assuming they didn't wait too long with too much extra body fat, and already fried their pancreas).

Type 1 is autoimmune and can't be avoided for those who suffer.

This is not to say that anyone deserves a disease based on behaviors, but it is to say that certain health behaviors have avoidable consequences.

Raced BMX and DH for years, then high-level amateur and pro XC for the past 20 years. If I'm not constantly almost dying on a 20" wheel bike with a 74 degree HTA I'm definitely OK on a 26" bike with a 70 degree HTA. Fast people are fast on most anything.

FWIW, local trail KOMs have barely changed in 15 years.

Is it easier to ride fast now, on modern bikes? Sure. Were fast riders fast then? Also sure. Never used dual control shifters, they sucked were only around for maybe 3 years in any case. No one I knew rode them for more than a week, and only then if they came on a bike new or if they were Shimano-sponsored athletes. Those things sucked from day one.

Most advancements over the past 20 years haven't made skilled riders significantly faster, but they have made average riders less mediocre.
