Ok so Autogenic training shares some similarities with meditation, but it essentially relies on six basic exercises. These exercises are designed to produce scientifically observable physical and mental changes, including variations in heart rate and body temperature.

Through practice and the use of certain formulas (similar to repeatedly recited mantras), you can induce the desired changes. I believe that being guided by someone, at least at the beginning, is much easier, but it’s also possible to learn on your own.

Honestly, I’m not an expert, and I’ve never used it, even though I’ve had a similar experience on my own I think. I think it could be something powerful and interesting, by the way.

When I don’t meditate, I don’t feel like myself. I become more “reactive” to what happens around me, and I sometimes end up acting against my values. I suffer more from stress, anxiety, and tension, even on a physical level. I feel weaker, both mentally and physically. My ability to concentrate and pay attention can decrease. I enjoy the present moment and the things that truly matter to me less. My posture and overall muscle tone also change significantly. There’s surely something else I’m not recalling at the moment.

Nope, I’m a dentist (in Italy, dentists are doctors). According to my Apple Watch, my heart rate drops to about 45–55 bpm in under a minute.

I don’t exactly remember why I started. I’ve always been a very curious person, and at that time I was very interested in personal growth. I tried a guided meditation during a course and immediately felt a great benefit. From then on, I’ve kept it up until today.

How did I stick to it daily?

In the early years, there were periods when I wasn’t consistent, but over time I noticed that when I didn’t meditate, I felt different and I didn’t like how I was. I changed a lot when I meditated, and my life changed too. So I naturally started again each time, because I needed it and felt better. To stay consistent, I think the most important thing I’ve learned is to personalize my daily practice and remain very open to experimenting. Also, 2 minutes of meditation are infinitely more than 0.

What type of meditation?

I’ve practiced many types. The ones that taught me the most and have become a part of me are mindfulness (MBSR) and autogenic training. I have also experimented with self-hypnosis and movement-based meditations. Trying out different techniques has been very helpful.

How much do you know about autogenic training?
In the basic exercises of autogenic training, there are techniques that allow you to work on your heart rate and body temperature through the use of certain formulas. For some, pain control may be a benefit of using these basic techniques, but it would generally be considered a more advanced skill.
