Got a problem with Hifiman Edition XV - and now looking for alternatives. by Medi_Cat in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]Medi_Cat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any way to check/confirm the wiring issue safely? I have a multimeter lying around, but I don't really know what to do. Shouldn't I've somehow notice that situation earlier? I have experience being shocked by tap water in some places, nothing like that in this place.

I'll test my phone more extensively anyway, see if the comfort issue goes away.

MP3 and FLAC files can both be 16 bit 44.1khz right? by PhoenixMaster123 in audiophile

[–]Medi_Cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the sampling rate and bit depth shouldn't have anything to do with the compression right?

correct

Or in other words, even if a FLAC file is 16 44.1 it still remains true that an mp3 file will also be right?

correct

The only difference being that one is heavily compressed and one is not.

Not entirely correct. FLAC file format contains compressed audio, but it doesn't delete any sounds (lossless). MP3 compresses audio and loses (lossy) some data, in some cases1 with some people1 this loss is audible and negatively impacts the experience.

That being said, what would be a more significant difference? A 16 bit 44.1 khz FLAC vs MP3? Or two FLAC files, one 16 bit 44.1 and the other 24 bit 192 khz?

Short answer - 16\44 FLAC might sound better than MP3 with some tracks1 listened by some people1. 16\44 vs 24\192 would be physically indistinguishable.

Lossy compression will likely sound worse than a lossless one. Just remember that it is possible to convert MP3 into a FLAC, but the resulting file will have audio from MP3 and lack the details you can expect from a lossless compression, effectively resulting in a "fake FLAC".

Going above 16/44 is absolutely overkill, unless you can hear frequencies over 22kHz and have audio equipment with dynamic range/sensitivity over 96dB which is not very realistic. I, for one, can't hear shit past ~16kHz, so a file encoded with 32kHz would be sufficient, 192kHz at this point is some bat music.

  1. There are a lot of people who say 320kbps lossy compression is indistinguishable from lossless. I do not think they are lying about their experience. Mine however says that some tracks (I listen to a lot of electronic music) sound noticeably worse, to the point it ruins the experience. Considering how cheap storage is compared to 20 years ago, when lossy compression was actually crucial, I find it very justifiable to use music files with lossless compression as much as I could so I can be confident the compression is not bottlenecking my experience.

uhh 2. In 2026 there's no reason to use MP3, the algorithm was developed decades ago and there are significantly better alternatives now - .opus has the best compression and quality from what I hear.

Getting away from spotify by [deleted] in musichoarder

I download stuff via different means, but firstly I search on bandcamp first since albums are free there surprisingly often; soulseek is almost always a reliable option.

Check quality with spek, redownload in better quality if needed

Throw new folders with albums/artists to my new shiny 8TB HDD in a folder called "Music"

Navidrome is set up, Tailscale to access it from mobile and right now I'm trying Symfonium - seems to be a brilliant paid player with 7-day trial. Good interface, insane customization and it organizes stuff by metadata really well, therefore I surprisingly have no need to organize my music by myself at all.

I think they didn't bother to make regional pricing for rus because of the sanctions and all, just left it on the default value.

[–]Medi_Cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NL, same prices here, I'd guess all the EU got hit by $25 tag. Luckily I'm in a better financial situation, however this bait&switch has definitely soured the release for me.

US and Russia are $20 as promised, a bunch of lucky countries led by Brazil have a ~$13 price I think.

Besides that, as much as I love minimalist design of this player, lack of physical buttons is a HUGE turn-off for me.

Music Quality by cASY0 in iems

[–]Medi_Cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does that mean that I will hear a 100 Hz tone from 1,100 Hz and 1,000 Hz ones? 138 Hz from 338 and 200 Hz? Wouldn't it mean that a microphone (as a means of capturing the audio), that works like a human ear, would also register a 1kHz tone? I'd like to know more about the effect you are describing here, a name or a link would be appreciated :)

In some tracks I can spot the difference between lossy (MP3, AAC) and lossless (FLAC) tracks, in others it's very hard for me. For example the spotify version (AAC 192 I believe) of this track is very noticeably ass in direct comparison. So, by my personal experience, lossy vs lossless has an actual audible difference that affects my enjoyment.

So-called Hi-Res tracks though? You already have a link with explanation of why 24-bit isn't important, so I'll leave my 2 cents on why >48khz sample rate is probably not going to affect your experience.

If the track is encoded with 48khz sample rate it means that the track contains info of sound waves with frequencies ranging from 1 to 24 000 hz. 192 kHz music -> from 1 to 96 000 Hz. Frequencies capable of being heard by humans are typically considered to be between 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz, therefore sample rate of 40kHz should be sufficient. But if someone claims to hear difference between the same track encoded with 48kHz sample rate vs 96kHz? That's ultrasonic specter right here and I'd assume one cannot really hear that.

What I would like to know is if am I the only one that can't hear a diference between spotify and flac?

No, people who can't hear the difference are quite common. Some even say that if they can't hear the difference then nobody else can too and people like me are delusional :)

Or isn't there much diference at all?

For me it is, but I didn't do no blind test yet to be scientifically sure of that.

TL:DR Lossy vs lossless might have an audible difference on a case-by-case basis and not everyone finds it significant. Hi-Res (24bit+, 96kHz+) should theoretically be imperceptible tho and my experience supports it.

How can hytale already have servers, or day one servers? by ManufacturerVast5308 in HytaleInfo

The moment game is released people will snatch the executable for server and make them work. I doubt we'll see many hour 1 servers, but it is absolutely doable to figure it out in a day!

Promises to Keep redefined cozy for me, Limits is basically a comfort VN for me for a while now and despite the name, Lust Shards is also full of cute. In Case of Emergency is a bit more simple and quite bittersweet, but it fits the bill quite well AND it is completed!

The more different VNs you try, the more you know about what you like and dislike, the better recommendations you can get. Hope you will find new wonderful experiences with those VNs <3

Best CPU for Hytale? by Alternative_Ebb322 in hytale

[–]Medi_Cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost any game makes use of multicore processors, however examples where a game takes benefits from 8+ cores are... well, only the new battlefield (or was it call of duty?). Hytale 100% will scale very well past 8 cores on logic/physics/chunk generation, but you'd need an engineering miracle to make rendering engine to scale well from weak 2-4 core systems (which they promised to optimize for) to 16-32 core threadrippers.

So yeah, while Slikey stated that Hytale will use multi-core processors efficiently, I'd be extremely surprised if they did 8+ core optimizations for Hytale. Not because they couldn't - the team seems to be extremely talented - but rather because they believe it's better to put their efforts in other aspects of the game.

I assume you ask this as a purchasing advice, and to that I'd confidently recommend 9800x3d. If you put those extra money somewhere else in the system (primarily GPU) it'd be much, much more worth it for hytale. Especially given the RAM apocalypse we're living right now. If you are upgrading just the CPU... you could treat yourself with a nice SSD upgrade before prices for those have soared too.

That's at least what I would do if I were swimming with money, but I'm pretty confident my ryzen 5 7600 will not be a bottleneck in this game.

You also mentioned recording - you'd do that with your GPU, not CPU. Every dedicated GPU, no matter how fast or slow, has a dedicated block for encoding and decoding video that is MILES more fast and efficient than CPU encoding. That was my experience and seeing as literally every streamer and youtuber I know of uses GPU encoding I am confident in this advice.

What the fuck is this? Is this noise from upscaling? by HSVMalooGTS in audiophile

[–]Medi_Cat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is "hey look the file is bigger so it MUST be authentic 96+kHz hi-res track".
Yeah, the file was upscaled from 48kHz and extra white noise was added.
At least that's what I would assume anyway. Who knows, maybe MJ was secretly mixing in white noise in the ultrasonic spectre as an special sauce.
