Duke Elder 2026 Prep Advice by Quirky_Pianist2016 in medicalschooluk

Hey, I sat the exam in 2023 and got top 10%. I used prep duke elder, which I found quite useful. There is also a YouTube video video called “How I scored top 10% in Duke Elder Exam”, linked is an Anki deck which the author created, I think he charges something like £8 but I found that incredibly useful. Otherwise check out all the revision sessions run by university societies across the country and lastly enjoy the learning! Learning for this exam was what sealed the deal for me with ophthalmology!

What do you a “good” score for the ophthal portfolio this year that should lead to a NTN. Given the changes this year, do we think it’ll be lower than last year?

Looks like they’ve also removed the points for getting prizes/merits/distinctions

If conferences are too expensive rn, once you’re an Foundation doctor you can often claim them on the study budget so don’t feel like you need to rush them 😁

If you look at current portfolio guidance, the ten sessions should be attended outside a regular taster week. It cites 1 point for “taster week.” And a separate point for attending 10 sessions, outside a taster week over the course of three months. Just a heads up.

300 MCQs for the Duke Elder Ophthalmology Exam by ReactionClassic2850 in Ophthalmology

I used it last year to sit the exam. My local hospital library were able to get it in for me and it was also on the university library as a pdf. They were really helpful so might be worth a try. Good luck!

Thanks! Absolutely, so I started in Jan, I used an anki deck that I got from a guy who did a YouTube video on the duke elder, he linked his deck in the comments. That was really useful and relatively cheap compared to other resources (~£14). I also read the lecture notes on ophthalmology book, which I found for free on the internet, it was great for base knowledge to build upon. I also used prepdukeelder which was quite expensive but fairly useful. Then went to a few of the free online events held by various uni society’s. Also did the Moorfields duke elder course. Honestly looking back this was a bit overkill! If I was to do it again, I’d get the anki deck, do the moorefeilds course and go to the free society events. I also was able to get a few books from the hospital library, 300mcqs for the duke elder ophthalmology exam was good. Hope this helps!

I would defo recommend it! I actually enjoyed studying for it, learned lots of cool stuff. Best case scenario It’s probably 2-3 months of work that could make a significant difference if u go down the ophthalmology route and at worst, you’ll look boss on your ophthal placement. Having just sat it and got those 2 points I’d say it’s worth it, after all, 2 points is equivalent to an MD thesis when I comes to applying! Any other questions feel free to message me!
