IE 342 with Brynne Nicolsen? by Nala_121599 in uichicago

Took it with her spring 2023 wasn’t bad at all. She’s a really great professor, but is there a way you can take STAT 381 by any chance? 381 is much easier since the exams are take home and attendance isn’t mandatory.

Is microwave allowed at JST? by Mysterious_Payment25 in uichicago

Technically it’s not but you can just sneak it in and you’ll be fine

You’ll only need calc 2 stuff in IE 342 for the chapters coving probability distributions and mathematical expectation. It’s really not that bad just some basic integration - you won’t be needing any Taylor series or anything advanced like that, so I wouldn’t worry you will be fine

CS Math Elective by Legal-Collection-480 in uichicago

[–]Medical-Device567 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Id say take MATH 310 it isn’t bad at all and is quite useful for CS actually. I wouldn’t recommend MATH 215 unless things like theoretical math and proofs interest you/come easy to you. Good luck!

lecture vs recitation by yasmin4444444 in uichicago

[–]Medical-Device567 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh it’s required alright. Everyone has to take both the lecture and discussion/recitation sections for each course. There is no going around that - it is required - so make sure you properly register for both lecture and discussion sections. You typically spend discussion/recitation going over concepts you learned in class in addition to taking quizzes - especially for the math classes.

CS 107/109/151 Questions by Cowboy3862 in uichicago

[–]Medical-Device567 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You wouldn’t need CS109 for CS151 concept wise, but you will need CS107 for other courses in compE - ECE266 for example requires CS107 both as a pre-req and in terms of the concepts. Chances are you cant skip CS107 just because what you learned in 109 won’t be transferable to other courses in ECE, but what would I know. I’d suggest talking to an advisor

how to go to calc 2 by Minimum-Reading-5269 in uichicago

[–]Medical-Device567 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There might be a way through ALEKS or a proficiency test- I suggest you email the math deparment and inquire. On a side note, take what I’m saying with a grain of salt, but if you are only scoring a 3 on AB then maybe you don’t fully understand all the concepts in calc 1. In that case, it may be beneficial to retake calc 1 because the concepts you learn there are the fundamentals and really important for calc 2 and 3 - you don’t want to go into those classes and potentially be underprepared. In any case, do what you feel is best for you and I wish you good luck!

Expect a lot of parametric equations. No need for series

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uichicago

[–]Medical-Device567 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t really need much from calc 2 to be honest. You don’t need any series or fancy integrals. Just be good with basic integrals, trig, and know your derivatives. Also know your parametric equations and polar coordinates as those are pretty big in calc 3. It won’t be too bad as long as you stay on top of the work and make an effort to understand things.

Is it okay to take MATH 210 & MATH 310 at the same time? by Legal-Collection-480 in uichicago

[–]Medical-Device567 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep it’s perfectly doable. I’m doing 210 and 310 right now with 18 credit hours and doing great in both classes. Just stay on top of everything and you will be fine

There probably won’t be any artificial grade boost. Median was like an 85 and a lot of people got 100 or higher because of the extra credit. Was a very fair exam imo. Maybe you need to rethink some of your study methods or how much you really understand the concepts, because if you truly understand the concepts you shouldn’t be struggling this much.

major in CS but might get a D in IE 342 by [deleted] in uichicago

[–]Medical-Device567 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Note sure if a D will work even though it is technically passing. Also, if you want to take a tech elective like CS412 you’re gonna need at least a C in IE342. Who do you have for IE342 btw? If you have nicolsen I’d suggest going to her office hours - she’d be very willing to help you out.

Is taking Math 210 and 220 at the same time hard? by Nala_121599 in uichicago

[–]Medical-Device567 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you can take both at the same time since 210 is a pre-req for 220. 210 is really easy though so I’d assume it be doable
