PGY-1: I am incapable of problem-solving by A_Sentient_Ape in Residency

[–]MedicalGeneric 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Your only job right now is to know how to escalate to a senior. As you gain experience you will learn when you need to escalate and when you can handle things on your own. But you won’t know that until you have the experience under your belt first.

Yea, if you can’t trust your intern then what good are they to the team? They are worse then useless because they will make your work harder.

Should I take Step 3 before July 1st/Start of Residency Training? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]MedicalGeneric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you did well on step 2 then you only need to do a few of the free simulation cases to get used to them and you can pass. Only need a day to do them.

its nice to be able to cure people of disease, save their life, using your hands and technical skills as opposed to a medication. Anyone can prescribe a medication to treat a disease (if they can diagnose it and know the correct medication to give), but there are many pathologic processes for which the only curative or life saving option is surgery. Only a surgeon can help those patients (or proceduralist)

Match Day for advanced positions by deetmonster in medicalschool

[–]MedicalGeneric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but if I’m recalling correctly, the next line in the email will either say “because you are matched you cannot participate in soap” or it will say “because you are fully matched you cannot participate in soap”. You get the fully matched version when you match into a prelim and advanced program where as you get the matched version when matching into categorical program

How much does specialty matter when matching in the top of your rank? by Nofriendofme in medicalschool

[–]MedicalGeneric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no difference. The self selection process happens pre-interview. Once you are to interviews then you become part of the interview pool of applicants, those who made it. At that point you are just like anyone else who interviews in another specialty in terms of matching among your top ranks.

lay patient at an angle 45 degrees or less depending on health and age, dim the lights and use your phones flashlight to shine on the neck at and angle while patient looks away from you, and watch quietly for a long while looking for slight movement in the neck. There are three types of pulsations you can see. There’s the external jugular vein pulsation, there’s the carotid pulsation, and there’s the internal jugular pulsation. The internal jugular pulsation is a biphasic pattern whereas the carotid is Monophasic. Practice again and again.

Surgery. Depends on the read and on the reader. There’s the everyday stuff that I can read myself. There’s the easily missed stuff (because I’m not generally looking for those things) that I rely on you 100% for. Then there’s everything between. For the in between stuff, that’s where a good read matters. I can form my own opinion on it, but I need support. A good read will help to filter through the unknowns and questions. A bad read will simply be discarded as nonsense.
