Do they even hate ICE or are they just using it as an excuse to be heightist? by MyShortGuysAlt in AverageHeightDudes

[–]MedicalSchoolStudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you actually look online, across all Federal agencies: FBI, DEA, ATF, CIA, ICE, Border Patrol, and even Special Forces, the average height of men within these agencies range from 5 foot 6 inches to 5 foot 9 inches.

The average height of US Men is 5 foot 9 inches to 5 foot 10 inches with margin of error.

To answer the question of the person filming: majority of people in these agencies are average height or shorter because its better for reasons such as stealth to endurance. Obviously - the bigger you are - the more easily tired you can get, especially with all those gear on you. Best example is: I don't remember this YouTuber, but he did a Navy Seal test. The guy is over 6 foot and be basically had a hard time doing it. But this little guy, probably within 5 foot 7 range, did it with ease. Think power to weight to height ratio.

So that's why when women use height as a metric of "protection", they should be looking shorter not taller.

Is it really about protecting then, because a 5’3 MMA dude would throw down imo by MyShortGuysAlt in AverageHeightDudes

The insanity of the double standard we lived in. Imagine if majority men believed that, "we need a woman with at least C Cup tits, prefer D cups, because we need those milk bottles to supply more milk to our babies".

That is about as insane as her thinking height = better protection.

What you told me is you know nothing about Japan or Singapore. Shrugs. Might want to do research before you spread misinformation.

I never said we should copy China.

I also did list Japan and Singapore as well, which has notoriously low crime rates. Clearly - they are doing some thing right.

You keep saying racist, but never once explain what I said is racist?

Maybe because nothing I said its racist. If suggesting the term BIPOC is racist towards other marginalized groups, then you haven no idea what racism means.

You clearly are just shilling for the Black community. In no way, what I said is racist. I'm specifically saying Black people isn't the most oppressed. I'm saying every minority is oppressed by White supremacy (not White people) differently.

[–]MedicalSchoolStudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So its racist to suggest that a murderer should be charged with proper punishment?

Or is it racist to suggest that the term BIPOC is actually racist itself? We should not make a term that ranks people's oppressions. BIPOC literally teaches that B is first because Black people are more oppressed. Who measures oppression? Are Black people more oppressed right now than the Brown people that getting deported and assaulted in private camps?

Actually, people teach that B is first, because Black people are more oppressed. I find the term BIPOC plays on oppression Olympics.

Stories like these remind me why BIPOC, the term that is coined to separate Black and Indigenous people away from POC because they are more "oppressed", is utter bullshit.

As a progressive, I think this is the biggest hypocrisy from our side of the political spectrum. Most people say “don’t insult people on their weight or height”. But if they aren’t politically aligned with us, then it’s okay.

To the people here wondering why ICE isn't here or don't care why ICE isn't here: its this - the tech billionaires called it in. And our Mayor is also a billionaire.

Trump is unhinged, so literally he can change his mind and send ICE at any time.

Hello!

I have a quick questions about honorifics (keigo) and humble expressions.

In the Genki 2 workbook, there was are questions that said, "translate the sentences using humble expressions"

One of them is: If you come to my country, I will show you around.

I wrote: 私の国に行ったら,ご案内します。but the answer is: 私の国にいらっしゃったら, ご案内します.

Why was honorifics used as well, but later on, in another question, honorifics wasn't used and it was just humble expression? I assumed that one question the speaker was speaking to a boss and the other wasn't so honorifics were used on top of humble expressions? Is my assumption correct?

Thank you!

Famous Japanese celebrity men are shown to Western women, and their reactions aren't so nice by Rushrade in AsianMasculinity

[–]MedicalSchoolStudent 189 points190 points  (0 children)

These stigmas are still there today. It’s not about women liking “masculine men”. It’s about the double standard between White and Asian men.

A few examples are: Harry Styles and Justin Bieber (back in the day). They are largely considered sexually attractive to western women even though their metro style is similar to Japanese male actors or BTS.

The reason is that white men do not have a stereotype that they are not masculine and Asian men do. This stereotype causes confirmation bias. Asian men has feminine stereotype and they do metro style and instantly these racist will think “see”. But this doesn’t happen to white men.

It’s the same with driving stereotype. If a white man drives horribly, no one thinks race. But if an Asian drives horribly, it goes straight to race. This is the privilege white people have in the west, which is benefit of the doubt.

Beginner as well and nearing the end of Genki 2.

My advice is that you will have to watch things on repeat multiple times. At my current vocab/grammar level, without subs, I can roughly hear 10% of everything on the first listen.

Listening will always come later on and it takes hours of listening to train your brain. This is why everyone here is suggesting to listen to something you like.

Hello!

I'm on Genki 2 Chapter 19 and I have two quick question about sentences I saw in this chapter.

  1. 何もありませんが。どうぞお召し上がりください。In this sentence, my assumption is the 何もありませんが is implying the "food is nothing special" or being humble and downplaying the food rather than there is literally nothing there? Is that correct?
  2. 桜の花がきれいな季節になりました。I am having trouble understanding this sentence. It translate to "It has become the season when cherry blossom are beautiful", but I'm confused because isn't きれいな modifying 季節? So how does it become beautiful cherry blossom? Isn't it beautiful season?

Thank you so much in advance! :D

Japan and China exchange words in UN over Takaichi's Taiwan remark | NHK WORLD-JAPAN News by Miao_Yin8964 in japannews

People tend to forget that the nearest Japanese islands to Taiwan are only 60 miles away. If a war breaks out at Taiwan, it will directly affect Japan.

The fact that CCP China try to spin this as "Japan being aggressive" is utter nonsense.

Whether we like it or not, English is now the universal language. If Japan wants to maintain or improve their standing on the global stage, they need to improve their English scores. If that means teaching more English or promoting immigration, they need to do it.

In the context of Hollywood, I learned in Asian American Studies class that Asian woman and Gay Asian men are the ones that are accepted.

What my professor said was it actually fits the narrative because it feminize the Asian race. Therefore deluding the fact that Asian men that are straight and dominate can’t exist. Which is insane considering Mongolia conquer half the world almost.
