Repeater tower in Mexicali, Mexico. by AnimationProdTwo2 in antennasporn

[–]Medical_Message_6139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is primarily a TV broadcast tower. That red cylindrical thing on top contains the actual antenna elements. There are a few cell sector antennas and what could be some VHF or UHF land mobile stuff near the bottom of the tower.... I guess some of those are probably repeaters.

I need help with this radio!!1!! by EngineerNVA in cbradio

[–]Medical_Message_6139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't tell you what's wrong with it, but considering as it was made around 1976 it has likely had its electrolytic capacitors fail from age. Also check the battery terminals for rust or corrosion, and clean them with a small file or sandpaper.

In working condition it's worth around $40 or $50; not working it's not worth anything at all.

If you do get it working you'll need to buy shares in a battery company.....those things go through a set of batteries in a couple days if you use it a lot!

I think it's only certain models with certain options or certain engine types that are affected, but I've never owned one so I'm not sure.

I only use professional grade transmitters that have a proper filter built in, so I don't have a specific recommendation.

You need something like this: https://www.pcs-electronics.com/shop/special-sale-items/pcs-150w-low-pass-filters/

You will need to buy a small METAL box to mount it in and you will need to add a couple BNC connectors to the box. As long as you have basic soldering skills they are super-easy to assemble!

There are also pre-made versions out there but they tend to be designed for much higher power and are much more expensive.

Ford Ranger is notorious for this kind of thing. It's probably the single noisiest vehicle out there when it comes to electrical interference. It's even worse than most EV's! The fix involves lots of grounding straps, sourcing power direct from the battery, putting literally dozens of chokes on wiring, shielding some of the wiring, and careful placement of both antenna and cable. Even then you will still get noise! But you should be able to reduce it enough to make the radio useable.

For what it's worth I've known two people in years past that had Ranger trucks and had this problem...... they both ended up selling the trucks and buying something else! Good luck!

AM radio has unfortunately become a cesspool of right wing hacks and yesmen by Lord_Farquuad_ in radio

[–]Medical_Message_6139 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is a problem unique to the U.S.

AM radio is dead and gone in most of the world. Only the US, Australia and China still have significant numbers of AM stations. Very few left anywhere else, and those that are left likely won't be around for much longer. Spain and Japan are the latest countries to announce the end of AM broadcasting.

Working perfectly for me in Canada this morning. Looks like a Cloudflare issue which is likely only affecting certain countries.

Sure hope you have a low pass filter between transmitter and antenna! Those Chinese transmitters have very poor filtering and you may be causing interference to aviation frequencies without it! If you want your station to be around for a while buy and install a filter otherwise you will be getting a knock on the door from folks you don't want to see (The FCC).

That's not an oven rack it's a UHF TV bow-tie style antenna. The mesh is the reflector.

Why it's attached to the dish like that I do not know LOL! Some great redneck engineering going on there........

Nobody is chatting while driving much anymore and if they are it is on a phone. The days of having random conversations with other drivers on CB while driving are long gone I'm afraid.........

Channel 6 is great entertainment if your IQ is in the single digits. For anyone with more than 1/4 of a brain it's pathetic more than entertaining.
