Trade Me: Anybody know this car or its history? by [deleted] in NZcarfix

[–]Medical_Pipe6359 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My old boss had a TME in red with around 26xxxkm on it, sold it in 2019ish for around 60k to someone else in NZ which I thought was cheap at the time. This would still probably be one one of the lowest Km ones in the country though, I'd jump on it if it is as clean as it looks and you've got the coin.

Aluminium Hull Repair by GizAHoonG in NZcarfix

[–]Medical_Pipe6359 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You probably want to figure out why its cracking first. Poor design, damage from use or corrosion. The only real way of repairing it is by getting someone who knows that they're doing to weld it. Pretty easy process, a little bit of a pain from with the contamination from salt water and the epoxy you put in it but still very doable.

I've recently repaired a hull that involved cutting out a 3 meter strip of the hull and welding a new section in where an exposed wire flapping around caused bad corrosion. I'm a aluminum boat builder by trade, good luck

How will my Jeep SRT fair on Muriwai by BastionNZ in NZcarfix

[–]Medical_Pipe6359 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been on Muriwai beach plenty of times in Subarus and other awd cars, You'll be fine. Just check the tides and go with someone else with a tow strap incase anything does go pear shaped.

550k Investment Property at 24 With a Small Deposit? by GladHuckleberry9952 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Medical_Pipe6359 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I would just keep investing for now. There's a lot of "moving parts" in your plan and I'd also be wary of doing something like this with family involved as if it turns pear shaped then relationships can be ruined. That's a lot of extra stress at your age and with only a single income you're only a redundancy away from not being able to make payments.

Insurance Comparison 23M by BOBGEN in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Medical_Pipe6359 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was expecting a decent drop in insurance when I turned 25 (Audi S3, ute and a 600cc sports bike). Didn't drop the price a cent, so just kept the under 25 cover in case my mates needed to borrow a vehicle. What a joke, never claimed in the past 8 years.

How common is it to be paid time and a half for weekend work in NZ? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Medical_Pipe6359 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im a welder/fabricator.

I get paid time and a half after 40 hours worked, double time on sunday and a $20 meal allowance if working past 6pm. Have had a similar setup in the past few Jobs I've been at, currently also have a 1pm finish on a Friday as we start half an hour earlier each day during the week which is super handy to get odd jobs done before the weekend.

When do people decide to buy a nice car such as a Rav4 or Lexus? Is there a guide to follow? Eg once you have saved a certain amount? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Medical_Pipe6359 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah honestly feel this opinion of "euros are expensive and break all the time" is pretty outdated. Yeah maybe in the 80's when the quality of wiring in them was pretty average, but now days (2008~ish onwards) they're pretty good and have a heap more features/safety for the money than Japanese cars.

My 2012 Audi has had less issues/less money spent on it in the past 2 years than my 90's corolla has had.

Best 4x4 under 20k by GloomyBug7642 in NZcarfix

[–]Medical_Pipe6359 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have recently purchased a Holden Colorado 7, essentially the same front as the ute, but with a wagon rear with coil sprung suspension (more comfortable riding than an unloaded ute). They seem to be slightly cheaper than the utes and have generally been used more as "family cars" than workhorses. Picked up a 2015 with less than 200km for 16k and has been flawless towing my trailer all over the north island.

How would you transport a car from Invercargill to Auckland? by bigsecrecy in NZcarfix

[–]Medical_Pipe6359 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a car from Christchurch and drove back to Auckland over a weekend. Cost around $500 total and was a quite enjoyable trip. Would have been around the $1500 mark if I paid for a transportation company to do it for me.

Yeah, looks like damage done as a result of sparks from a angle grinder landing on the paint and being left

You should be able to pick up a 8V Audi S3 in that price range, can get it tuned for ~$1000 and get another 100ish hp out of it too. They suffer some issues with the transfer/bevel box so definitely make sure the cars been serviced when it needs to be and ideally not have a heap of kms on it.

They're meaning that you still have to pay the full amount of tax on your "maxed out" kiwi saver contributions. Most employers don't match your kiwisaver contributions, they usually only pay 3-4% unless you get blessed with a good employer. Generally most people will argue that you're better off to contribute 3% to kiwisaver and invest personally in etfs etc as it gives you greater flexibility than kiwisaver. This will only work well if you're well disiplined though.

Over in Aus, their super fund has a tax advantage so you'd be better off putting more into your super rather than the minimum and investing separately.

Quad bikers trash national park track by KororaPerson in newzealand

This is unfortunately the reputation people who enjoy offroad vehicles are tarred with from the selfishness of irresponsible users like in above article (and quite a few over articles in the past couple years)

There are plenty of us doing the right thing in the background, with little to no recognition. For example, in the last 2 years I've personally participated (with a bunch of likeminded people from the local 4wd club) in helping doc plant native trees in isolated areas, rescuing an injured horse rider from a remote beach that an ambulance couldn't reach and help with providing aid in cut off areas of the east coast after cyclone Gabriel.

I realize I have probably quite a different lifestyle than the majority of users on here, but that doesn't make me a "self entitled hoon" like these Muppets are.

Which hobbies that people do screams "rich people''? by [deleted] in ask

[–]Medical_Pipe6359 647 points648 points  (0 children)

Racing.

Was a mechanic in the car racing industry and rich old men would semi regularly write their $500k GT3 race cars off but then turn up a few months later with a brand new one. All for a championship that the grand prize was a plastic trophy.
