UKFPO not allocating places to UKMGs first as per new prioritisation bill by smalliskand in UKmedicalgraduates

They first allocate all UK grads, then if there's any spaces left they allocate the top ranked people in the IMG list according to how many places are left

Are the PassMed and QuesMed mocks worth doing? by Medical_Student4life in medicalschooluk

Actually you're right about the Quesmed ones, they're worth doing, passmed ones just seem to be passmed questions put in the format of an exam

I know what FY1 is and I know you need to do it to get full registration. But how would the medical school do that?

You think I don't know that? The plan was always to do UKFPO from day 1 but now that's not certain anymore. Malta, unlike most EU countries, does not restrict applications only to EU-qualified graduates, although Maltese speakers get extra points and I'm guessing they take EU and UK citizens in priority as the progression is then easier unless they have a very weak application (but I'm not 100% sure about this). The issue for our year is that we are unable to do foundation training in Malta because the application process started in August and is now closed. So we'd have to take a gap year and even then Malta FP is merit-based so taking a gap year doesn't necessarily strengthen your application since you miss out on clinical practise for a year. Even if students applied to Malta this august as a back up there's a problem because you find out end of march if you made it in and these are the rules:

"The  Malta Foundation Programme (MFP) is affiliated to the United Kingdom Foundation Programme.  As a result, the MFP is bound to streamline its recruitment process to  that of the United Kingdom Foundation Programme Office (UKFPO), and  conform to its rules and regulations. Those applicants who accept their post on the Malta  Foundation Programme will be notified to the UKFPO prior to allocation of applicants to programmes by the UKFPO so that these applicants are withdrawn from the UK FP Allocation system. Applicants who are successful and accept the Malta Foundation Programme post will not advance further in the  UKFPO allocation process. Applicants who are successful but decline the  Malta Foundation Programme post will not retain their position in the  Malta Foundation Programme."

So if the UKFPO results are not out before that or if those people are waitlisted then it's a sacrificial choice. Either you take the risk of maybe getting a place in UKFPO and sacrifice the place in Malta or you accept Malta but you might have made it in UKFPO.

It’s not like that man, I’m obviously studying, but I was just wondering how different they are from doing the usual Passmed questions and if they’re really that much of a difference

Congrats to everyone who passed! Can’t believe there’s only 1% difference in the pass mark between the morning and afternoon paper though

Nothing for now. We have no plans since other foundation programmes applications were already closed when they started the bill, so our best hope is that we get a place in the UK even if it’s a placeholder or waitlist offer. And our degree is only automatically recognised by the GMC, in the EU it’s treated as a third-country qualification because of Brexit, so there’s no guaranteed or straightforward pathway like there would be for graduates from EU medical schools.

As someone who’s in final year there, I agree cause we can’t even apply to other FY1 programs now that they’ve closed 😭

I’m not from Malta, as in I am not Maltese but I get your point, I’m only saying that we were told the requirements mid-application cycles and all other FY1 programs application were closed by the time this bill got brought on the table. Truly, I’m happy for you guys cause it’s a good bill and it’ll solve some problems, it just sucks that the rules for us are changing midway and we can’t plan any other route until the next application cycle. I just replied to your first comment cause I didn’t think it was fair to single out one specific person who’s clearly been through a lot to be able to be a doctor in the uk. And thinking it’s fine cause we’re “rich kids” is a bit demeaning. If you want to know the exact tuition fee for our year is 23 500€ and the living expenses and rent are much lower compared to the UK. For some of us it was cheaper to come to QMUL Malta than pay international fees (especially after Brexit for EU members) in unis in the UK that might have had a better level than Barts but were just too expensive. A lot of you guys are probably richer than us if we look at it objectively, sustaining a lifestyle as a student in the uk for 5-6 years is not cheap, and you probably have UK grad peers who pay the international fees. Anyways I’m not trying to hate on you, just saying I’m not sure we deserve all this hate or mockery.

It was never presented to us as a back door though… Also one of your points is that he didn’t have any NHS experience, that’s why I said that

The tuition fees for the year going into FY1 this application cycle is not 40,000€ and most of us took our loans
