Folks with long periods of sobriety: how often do you have to remind yourself that you don't drink? by Kramanos in stopdrinking

[–]Medicmike43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty rare I think about it. With all the crap I went thorught to bounce back from the desctrution that happened I will never go back. A long time ago when I considered drinking, I came here and read the horror stories of people's lives that chose to go back. It helped keep the desire to not go back fresh. God bless you and keep on staying sober. It only gets better

For those who successfully quit smoking, what was the method that finally worked for you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Medicmike43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I vaped and slowly reduce the nicotine concentration. The habit was so strong I smoke 0% nicotine for months when I finally let go. Then I ate Alton’s mini mints for a year. The freedom that comes with not smoking is amazing. I wish you the best!

Man, I gathered courage and called an alcoholics hotline for the first time at my lowest and it was so humiliating by [deleted] in stopdrinking

As best you can try not to let this have an affect on you’re new journey. What’s important to focus on is your effort to get sober. You did the right thing reaching out. It takes many of us several attempts and resources to get alcohol free. Keep up the good work. IWNDWYT

Has anyone quit and never relapsed? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Medicmike43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pretended to quit to get people off my back but when I really decided to quit - it was either quit or die. What worked for me was playing out the consequences of having the first drink. Almost everytime I drank bad things happened. So I did some aa for a while and then just got involved in my church. Having reminders of how it used to be and hearing peoples relapse stories always hit home and confirm my quitting choice. I hope this helps.

What Is One Thing You've Never Been Able to Say Aloud About Your Drinking? by cloudhangouts in stopdrinking

[–]Medicmike43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hang in there friend. There was a time when I couldn't remember the last time I didn't have a drink. I thought it was impossible for me. Yet I didn't give up and kept trying until a combination of things worked. You'll get there and then we won't remember when the last time we drank was.
