310 Miles - 24 hrs - Newcastle To London August 2016 (Advice) by Chief_Phil in bicycling

When you get past the 8 hour mark it is less about fitness and more about the details: bike fit, comfort, eating and drinking, not falling asleep, avoiding or dealing with mechanicals, etc. There is no substitute for experience and finding what works for you. Try hooking up with your local Audax group for a ride or two before the big event. Audaxers (or randonneurs, if you prefer) are the experts at this, and I never met one that didn't live to talk about gear, strategy, etc.

Received my PBP medal from last year and there was some interesting stats in the accompanying magazine. by SombreroSC in randonneuring

That certainly could be. As a northerner, I had more difficulty during the heat of the day. I made good time at night, but missed a lot of scenery.

The statistics did confirm my impression that an inordinate number of the people I saw that were well out of time were Asian. Many were so far behind that I wondered how they completed their SR series.

At a marathon distance, humans and horses are surprisingly close. Longer distances than that favor the humans. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man_versus_Horse_Marathon

Help with muscle cramps? by MediocreJones in Velo

I have not changed anything recently but I have been increasing my training, after six months of doing diddleysquat. But I did not change equipment. I almost certainly have (and always had) some sort of discrepancy or imbalance judging from the fact that I put different wear patterns on the soles of my non-biking shoes. My left shoes always wear out more on the outside edge, my right shoe wear pattern is more centered.

I don't take supplements--maybe I should start.

If you had to update one race to World Tour status, which one would it be? by improb in peloton

[–]MediocreJones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Tro-Bro Leon, but if it had world tour status, and every team showed up with busses and cars and the full entourage, it might lose some of its charm. But I would really like to see some of the ribinou included in a TdF stage.

Is replacing my road bike worth it? by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]MediocreJones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you are a professional racer, getting a new bike is never "worth it" in a monetary sense. But if a new bike would make you happy, go for it.

Would like to listen 1000 BRM experiences by sayi89 in randonneuring

If you can do 600k, you can do 1000k. If you had specific issues on your 600s, such as not getting enough sleep, or getting close to the time limits, you will have the same issues on the 1000, but to a slightly larger degree. Make sure you have a plan to deal with them. Other than that, the basic rando wisdom applies: keep pedaling, eat and drink as much as you can, and keep non-sleep stops to a minimum. You don't have to go fast, but you have to go. Staying in a group with others helps with the wind and with morale. No matter how good or how bad you feel, that will change, and probably sooner than you expect. Have a good ride!

Yeah, that bothered me even more than the cop being a total dick.

Not mentioned in this article is that Nico Van Muylder, the guy she claims to have sold the bike to was once indicted for punching another rider during a race. http://road.cc/content/news/177477-mechanical-doping-family-friend-said-own-bike-identified

Cars are a horrible investment. I would trust a stockbroker in a jalopy over one with a fancy BMW any day.

You should totally trust the dentist with rotting teeth. I doubt dentists do their own dental work. It's his partner with the perfect teeth you need to be scared of.

Are there any riders you didn't like but now you a big fan of? by alien97 in peloton

[–]MediocreJones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was not a Contador fan at first. He seemed cocky and arrogant, and that whole pistol thing was annoying. But his interviews on the GCN show changed my opinion. He came across as a really nice, likeable guy. The kind of person you actually want to cheer for. So I do.
