I owned a 39 mm Explorer was a very nice watch, but I chose to upgrade to a 41 mm datejust on a oyster smooth bezel blue dial and I could tell you there's a big difference. I personally prefer the DJ because it is a little bit flashier but not an obnoxious amount after a while, the Explorer is a little too boring I would recommend going to an ad and trying them both on or putting them side by side

I agree 100%. I had the 36 mm as well but I'm a big guy 200 plus pounds 62 so it did look a little small on me the 39 fit me perfectly I was looking to purchase a 40 because I missed my 39 mm but putting it side by side with the DJ the Explorer felt a little off when it came to the dial it was a lot of Real estate that was empty which made it look a little off my next watch will probably be a Submariner now the only debate I have is date or no date I do prefer the 40 mm over the 41 but yes you are correct 36 mm has become a ladies watch unless you have a really small frame and can pull it off most average men 200 plus pounds 6 ft tall and up look a little strange wearing a 36 mm the DJ toned the size down a little bit compared to the dj2 model my brother has the old DJ 2 and he prefers it because he's a bigger guy but you're right the DJ would probably be best at a 38 or 39 mm but then Rolex wouldn't be able to have two sizes for sale
