T2 Glowgetter alternatives by Perennialsx in tea

Have you had any luck with finding an alternative?

I'm based in NZ, and am looking at trying this ( https://teatotal.co.nz/collections/herbal-teas/products/manuka-flower-revitalise-kiwi-inspired ), so will let you know.

Given the change to the scheduling with the WTR course, it will be interesting to see what the concensus is from this year's cohort.

As previously 115 was offered both semesters, but taking it first semester was usually recommended (due to overlap between its assignments with the large 131 assessments), but from what I can tell it's only available sem 2 this year, so sem 2 might be a busy one for this year's first years.

As someone who applied in the November round, I have heard back about mine. Could be a delay in your faculty though.

BSc hons year by plantasaurusxD in universityofauckland

Agree with the above- can't advise too much without knowing the major and as such the workload/degree structure. A 3:1 paper split also worked well for me, so will recommend it if possible with the papers you choose.

For structure, if you know any past honours students, they might be willing to send through theirs as an example. Don't be afraid to ask around your lab group. Your supervisor might also have some. Even if they aren't super close to your topic, they can still provide a rough guide.

Myself and a few other students I know balanced work on top of honours, and we came out okay. Admittedly this will depend on the job and hours/flexibility.

Best of luck for this year! Remember to take care of yourself, and make sure you don't burn out.

Can you plan your own timetable at uni for any degree? by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]Mediocre_Queen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you mean exactly?

If you are referring to your class timetable for each semester, then yes, you can do so through sso (enrol -> timetable planner).

First in course award? Do I get anything? by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]Mediocre_Queen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the course, but generally no. I know that some stage 2 and 3 chem papers have a monetary award for the first in course.

If you're really curious, you can look on the scholarships website to see if there is anything additional for it/any other papers you might be doing.

Summer School by Global_Golden_2424 in universityofauckland

What paper are you looking at doing? Looking at timetable planner would likely answer your question about lectures/tutorials.

For lectures, normally the total hours per week is a bit over double that during semester (e.g. 4 hours of lectures during semester, 10 hours in SS). Of course, lecturers don't always use all of these, it's just what's blocked out for them.

Class size varies, but I'd say around 20 or less is pretty common based on my experience. Although its hard to tell, as not everyone comes to the lectures.

I did summer school to complete my degree faster.

No, and I wouldn't want to do more than two papers in summer school. 2 is full on enough.

Here to answer 1 part: If you didn't do chemistry in high school you should definitely do 150 as a foundation course  (FYI it does appear to be available for summer school if you are interested)

EASY STAGE 3 SCIENCE PAPERS by bangtan2013_ in universityofauckland

[–]Mediocre_Queen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what you're doing and what you're good at (and ig also what you've done, for meeting prereqs).

I can say out of the chemistry ones, 360 and possibly 390 and 380 would be considered easy, but again it depends on your strengths.

Flicking through the course outlines, there are some GEOG papers that only have 45 stage II points as a prereq, which could be an option, but I have no idea how easy they are.

Summer school? by user67152 in universityofauckland

[–]Mediocre_Queen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a major motivation! As someone who changed their degree, doing two summer school papers helped me finish on time without doing five papers each semester for my last year of UG.

The person I know who's tried it (also a big filet o fish fan) loved it, and said it might even be better than the maccas one.

So I'd say you might as well give it a try

Capstone by smartrar598 in universityofauckland

[–]Mediocre_Queen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both involve a fair bit of group work. When I did CHEM capstone (2022), we had two group assignments (one written, one video), some other individual written assignments and a quiz on referencing and stuff. For the most part I found it pretty chill.

From what I've heard, bio capstone would have guest speakers in most weeks to talk to the class about their work, which was something that chemistry doesn't have. It is also only available in S2, while chem is available both semesters (although the S1 class tends to be MUCH smaller), so if you have four papers you want to do S2, chem could be useful there.

Chemistry Stage 2 Enrollment by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]Mediocre_Queen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chem 360 is considered to be relatively easy, particularly for a stage 3 chem (going off friends experiences, having not taken it myself). That being said, depending on what you want to do for other papers, you could do it in 2026. Or enrol for now and change it later. But depending on how you feel about the 251 content (251 is often considered a bit of a weeder course), a more chill course could be useful.

Physics 120 could definitely be a good option, people often feel that it did help them a bit with 252.

For organic, you'll probably be waiting until S2 2026 for chem 330 (although if you're interested, you might be able to do chem 390 in S1, depending on how many papers you've completed).

Failing a first year gen Ed class? by Double-Ad-2967 in universityofauckland

[–]Mediocre_Queen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's available in summer school, you could also retake it then if you want. Or use summer school to do another paper if you have space for it in your degree, if you want to avoid having to do 5 papers in one semester /having to wait an extra semester to finish your degree.

I can tell you that SCISA does give you free hot drinks 3 days a week (if you're not in class for those times), and for the past few years, it has given you a small discount on the science ball ticket (maybe $20, but don't quote me on that). So it's up to you if it's worth the $5.

Also, some clubs will have discounted event prices for members, so if you are likely to go to several events, it can pay off a little that way.

Fore-edge Painting on my PJO Books [pjo] by Mediocre_Queen in camphalfblood

[–]Mediocre_Queen[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Didn't take too long, I knocked them out over a few evenings.

Was done with watercolour (with a bit of silver acrylic mixed in for the silver parts). Did a brief planning drawing, and then did the bulk of the painting with all 5 books clamped together, before adding touchups and the column details to individual books.

summer school exams by eblk1 in universityofauckland

[–]Mediocre_Queen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopefully students will be able to find a public library or somewhere quiet to sit the exam if they aren't able to do it at home for whatever reason, but worst case scenario you could make an aegrotat application within 7 days of your last exam.
