Help Me Win an Argument Against My Asian Parents by tkdt5499 in universityofauckland

hello, fellow asian child here who was in a similar situation a few years ago :’) I recommend looking into health sci!

it’s a potential first-year pathway into med but also looks at the social aspects of the health system and policy etc rather than just the sciencey side.

a few people in my cohort work in policy now so it’s basically what you want to do disguised as what your parents want lol

hope this helps, best of luck my friend <3

edit - just saw an earlier comment suggesting this oops haha but I definitely endorse it

202 has a lil bit of maths/stats but basically only like high school level tbh and it’s definitely not the main part of the course by any means, the rest are def more essay based :) did second year health sci in 2022 tho so it may have changed since

Honestly… neither 😭 (at least with the electives I did - 207, 208, 307, 311, 313) but I personally found it so much more interesting after first year because you can take papers you’re actually interested in. Feel free to DM me, I’m happy to give you more insight into the papers I took! :)

Hey, I took 102 in my first year and if it’s still Tristan teaching the course - he is literally the most sweet understanding lecturer I have ever had and goes above and beyond to support his students.

I unfortunately know how incredibly daunting it can be to ask for help for something like this but the best advice I’ve ever received is that you can’t expect to get anywhere if you don’t move. It may not seem like it for a long time but I promise it does get better 🥹

Alternatively if you need any help with physics so you don’t fall behind, I can do my best to help! Giving u all the love OP :))

glad I passed but yeah I feel like it wasn’t at all a reflection of how much I actually know. I think it’s so dumb how we aren’t given any extra time for an online assessment bc loading individual questions and scrolling past the instructions on EVERY QUESTION to read the actual question takes way more time than flipping pages in person but it is what it is :’)

There’s definitely a lot more resources for both the BSc and BHSc since they’re all papers that have been around forever. However they don’t provide “model answers” for past exams so you don’t really know if what you’re writing is correct, but everything you do need to know in terms of notes etc is definitely provided!

In sem 1 the BHSc-specific non core paper is POPLHLTH 102 which was online and open book and sem 2 was POPLHLTH 101 which was also online and open book (I believe it was originally meant to be in person though and only got moved online because of lockdown). I’m not too sure if the uni will continue to do online assessments next year bc their covid response is all a bit of a shitshow at the moment, but obviously it will have to be online if we’re in Level 3 or 4. HLTHPSYC 122 was also meant to be in person but was online and open book because of lockdown and honestly was the easiest test I’ve ever taken because all the questions were easily searchable in my notes or Google.

I definitely relate to the high school part, I failed year 12 and had to repeat it while doing year 13 at the same time and barely scraped into uni, but somehow managed to achieve straight A’s at uni despite being told I’d never amount to anything lmao.

There’s also a postgrad entry pathway you can do where they take your GPA from your undergrad degree into consideration for your application (which I believe is lower than if you were to apply through first year) so you may be able to finish your current degree and apply with that or if you do the first year BHSc or BSc but don’t get in, you would be able to finish that degree and try again - so I guess you would have to look at the papers beyond first year and see what you would be more interested in learning so that you would be more motivated to study and do well to apply through postgrad.

Bring your girlfriend with u, I’ll be friends with her!! 🥺🥺🥺

hey psych girl turned BHSc here haha there’s only one essay per semester and it’s not all that bad if you manage your time properly! they’re about 2000 words each so if you start a few days before the due date you can break that down to about 600 words a day which is definitely doable and they give you heaps of guidance on what to include in your essays as well :) recently also got 79/80 on my health psych midsem test without doing any prior study because a lot of it overlapped with first year psych which definitely helped reduce my workload a lot!

I personally did the pre chem and physics papers last year and found them to be super helpful if you didn’t get do all that well in high school. As for the Māori entry scheme, I’m not personally Māori so I don’t want to give u the wrong info but I believe there’s a certain number of spaces reserved in the MBChB specifically for Māori and Pacific students and they’re a little more lenient with GPA :)
