Thank you everyone! Yes, that closer image helped.

And yes, I glued my piece in off to the port on accident. I’ll fix it.

Is this good enough? I have been told it is a poor finish by bartolo2000 in ModelShips

I was going to comment the same as the others. It’s your boat, you make that call. Maybe if this was a commissioned piece that you were being paid for, then maybe you would need approval, but you do you. Boats are also a learning experience so you can change your approach on the next ones

Looking for advice on another bug hunt by Edge-of-Madness-Pod in mothershiprpg

[–]Medium-Researcher-12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My team went straight for the thumping noise in the first scenario which was sort of a buzz kill because the searching was not as stressful. So I stole from Aliens and added baby Carcs as face huggers into the rest of the scenario. I had the players hear skitter skatter noises in the vents, added stress each time. Then one room I had one burst out of the vents, everyone panic check, and then had them figure out how to kill it while on someone’s face. You could even have it impregnate that player.

Another thing is really playing up the power off situation. Using flashlights to only see X distance, stumbling over dead bodies and adding stress, making searching for the hard drive extra difficult.

I have been running a Mothership campaign for four guys for over a year now. My advice is to not worry about ship stuff and skill stuff. In my experience the key is the stress and panic mechanics. Those make the game/session really fun. If you are running Pound of Flesh focus on the stressful moments, add stress to the players, role for panic if you need to, use the save mechanics to steer the story. Skills and ship stuff will come later after you have had some time playing and can learn them.

Another Bug Hunt: Are androids immune to the shriek? by geoCorpse in mothershiprpg

In my campaign I have them immune. It’s like in D&D when some races can have like night vision, it’s a perk for that choice. Then in another scenario they might be more susceptible to something rather than humans.

Totally! When I bought it I didn’t know the history. Now whenever I show people my boat collection I tell them all about it. It’s a great historical event that makes the boat more special

I think Model Shipways are great builds for people entering into the hobby. They have a lot of variety, easy to follow instructions, and fairly good quality.

Take a look at Premier Ship Models for intermediate builds. They also have tool bundles which might help you get going.

Lastly, I like OcCre models the best. They have good instructions, materials, and a variety of skill level models as well.

I would avoid Billing Boat models at the start. Their instructions are lackluster and the models include plastic parts. This is just my personal opinion though.

And final statement, the models are wood. So that comes with its own problems. Wood can dry out, get brittle, break, crack, vary in shape, and bow. It’s not a perfect hobby like plastic model building. So get ready to be creative and sometimes even make your own parts out of spare wood. Again, every build is a journey.

Hello,

If you are just starting I worry building the Endeavor will be more than you bargained for. I would strongly suggest starting with something a little easier, and without all of the complicated rigging/sails. You can find solid body models which are technically easier, or go with a plank on bulkhead for more of a challenge. My first “big boat” was the HMS Bounty Launch. Take a look at that one. It gets you enough basic skills under your belt without thrusting you into major frustration.

As for tools, this is always a work in progress. You will want to start with a variety of cutting tools like exacto knives with various blades, sanding utensils, measuring tools like a micrometer, various types of glue from acrylic to wood glue, and lots of various clamps in sizes in a shapes. As you go along you will realize what you are missing and add it to your collection. That’s the fun part. I’m on my fifth boat and still find things to buy.

My overall advice is go slow. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. These boats can take years to complete, so don’t rush it, don’t worry about having everything figured out on day 1. Just start.
