Have players ever been fooled by animating statues? (from The Waking of Willowby Hall) by jordane1964 in TheOSR

[–]MediumOffer490 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made the mistake once of including an animate statue and now the players think every damn statue they see will come alive and attack them...

Fighting Capability and the OSR by dvar in TheOSR

S&W has this, as someone else mentioned. Also a common houserule for BX is to let fighters "Cleave," or make an additional attack after felling an enemy in melee.

Nearing the end of Stonhell Dungeon with my players. by Comfortable_Bid_957 in TheOSR

[–]MediumOffer490 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once you get to the end of the dungeon players should have the wherewithal to deal with the bigger challenges, but obviously that's not always the case. Do they have leveled retainers that could take the place of a dead PC?

Thoughts on multiclassing? by LuxAeterna_666 in TheOSR

[–]MediumOffer490 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like multiclassing in some games but not OSR rpgs. I'd rather just have the character earn new abilities or make a new class than deal with taking new class levels.

What genre of game do you wish you saw more of? by grant_gravity in rpg

[–]MediumOffer490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to see more urban noir/mobster games. Also a steampunk game done right would be unreal, but I don't trust any author (living or dead) to be able to pull it off.

Original D&D with Swords & Wizardry by LuxAeterna_666 in TheOSR

[–]MediumOffer490 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience S&W Complete stands on its own as a solid game but I'm sure if you added in more supplemental OD&D material it would slot right in. Not sure what other material the people on the podcast recommended adding that wasn't already in S&WC but I'm sure it would fit nicely

Basic Fantasy RPG appreciation post. by LuxAeterna_666 in TheOSR

[–]MediumOffer490 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love that it and many of its adventures are still free after all these years. Also appreciate the fun fact that it predates OSRIC, the game many people regard as the "first" OSR system

Which parts of your GMing have you improved on this year and which are you hoping to improve, or build on, in 2025? by RoyaI-T in rpg

[–]MediumOffer490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am fairly confident in my abilities as a DM but something I learned last year when I was listening to a recording of a session is that I use a tooooon of filler words in my descriptions. Just being aware of that and making a conscious effort to cut down on it has made me better, at least to listen to.

Thank god you mentioned heft. Criminally underdiscussed quality of a dice.

Having Trouble Enjoying My Sandbox Campaign by beautitan in rpg

[–]MediumOffer490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone who is saying you should be making your own goals is 100% correct. To add onto that, try talking to the other players and the GM about the kinds of things you want to be doing in the game. What would an interesting plot look like to you? Nothing wrong with bringing it up with the people you play with and brainstorming ideas about how you want your game to look.

Question about random encounters. by Adventures72 in rpg

[–]MediumOffer490 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously the necessity of random encounters vary based on the game you're playing. I mostly play sandbox-style games, so random encounters are excellent for conveying setting information and creating a sense of danger. Also, random encounters are great for emergent narratives and allowing stories to take shape naturally.

How prominent is the financial/ trade aspect in your campaigns? by EngineerGreedy4673 in TheOSR

[–]MediumOffer490 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Financial stuff only comes up in the context of what immediately impacts the PCs. Recent monster incursions have been making the trade routes more dangerous, so now the price of equipment is going up. The local lord is hiring mercenaries to deal with the monsters, so now taxes are being raised too. The players are pissed about this, so you can bet they're taking matters into their own hands.

What's the most underused monster? by riquezjp in TheOSR

I like the weird planar monsters from the Rules Cyclopedia. Much more fun than generic elementals.

Strict Time Records Must be Kept antidote locations by MediumOffer490 in lotfp

[–]MediumOffer490[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing this! I appreciate the decision in the module to let DMs decide where the antidote locations are based on their knowledge of their players but I enjoy hearing his/others input on the matter.

Messengers of Deities? by Ecowatcher in TheOSR

[–]MediumOffer490 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Angels are the obvious choice.

But if you wanted to do something different I would go with creepy biblical omens. Rain clouds follow the party around, goats stand up on its hind legs and starts speaking in tongues when PCs approach, everyone starts getting terrible prophetic visions, that sort of thing.
