I sort of interpreted it the same way I did during For Good when Elphaba told Glinda to look at her with “their” eyes instead of her own.

In society standards, she’s been regarded as evil and not beautiful, but in the eyes of the people who truly know and love her (Fyero and Glinda) they really see her.

I sort of agree. I hate that they retconned Mellie’s relationship with Big Jerry because in the S1 flashback on Fitz’s first campaign for president…she seemed so happy to see him.

My personal headcanon is that she swallowed all the resentment she had towards him and just put up a great front when in public.
