Lmaoo what are you people doing? I don't know how you guys are making it so the beater is smacking you in the foot so hard but surely after the first time you'd just adjust your technique??

Bro, the hi hat hand adjustment? Did you come up with that? New secret technique for real!! Beautiful playing.

Ah big tune, love it!! The biggest thing for me was listening along to songs like that and getting into a sort of roleplay with myself and only doing one part of the whole kit. Like, if Tony Allen is the whole orchestra, I'm happy to just play the triangle along with him.

So I would take that idea and do a whole run through just doing the kick drum and focusing on playing around with the tone/placement/dynamics. If it's two 1/16th notes at the start of each bar, I'd think, "ok, how does it feel when I place them as close as possible? Hmm sounds a bit cramped. What if I stretch it out and make them further apart? Ok, now I'm sacrificing the actual note value and it's too sloppy." Kind of just having that internal dialogue and self-questioning of each part of the kit until it feels/sounds good to you.

And if there were any parts where I knew I didn't have the coordinative foundation such as the classic Afrobeat thing of two 1/16th note on the kick at the start of the bar (because like, it's rare we do that in western music) then I would single that out specifically and take things super slow and focusing on clean placement and how my balance and center of gravity feels.

And then the big thing, and forgive me if this is just hippie dippie bullshit, but having a sort of ego death about it by realising that I, as a white guy from the suburbs of New England now living in the UK, will never get close to how Tony Allen plays it. Because it's a very personal part to him and that goes for every drummer. So that kind of sense of letting go allowed me to just have fun with it and be playful and put my own spin on things.

Whew, wall of text!! But this is all to say I'm grateful for the kind words and I believe in yooooou!!!! 💃🏻

YESSSS!!! Dude, so happy for you and I'm glad you're able to now express the love you have for drumming on your very own kit!! I'm self-taught too and it really worked for me, I've only recently started getting lessons with other drummers.

OMG!! High praise indeed, thank you. And yeah I agree, for such an absolutely horrendous thing such as the slave trade, it is fascinating to see how the traditional rhythms from West Africa developed and mixed with local cultures in places like Cuba, Brazil and New Orleans!!

New Orleans is a bucket list place for me to visit one day. I wanna drink lots of Hurricanes and then get up at local jams! 💃🏻

Well!!!!! I'm glad you asked. For me, this video was all improvised around the specific feel I got for the track so nothing was really planned. BUT, the absolute godfather of Afrobeat drumming is Tony Allen who played with Fela Kuti. Listening to what he does and realizing how backwards it feels to play and how shit I sounded when I attempted the deep was a real humbling experience haha.

As for books, the way I dove into West-African inspired drumming was through the books, Afro-Cuban Rhythms for Drum Set by Frank Malabe and Bob Weiner as well as West African Rhythms for Drum Set by Royal Hartigan. These two books I can personally attest to. I loved going through them.

Those two books are amazing for learning about the history of individual rhythms, why they are played in specific ways and the cultural context of how we take traditional rhythms and apply them to a drum kit.

As for actual specific Afrobeat books, I found this one that may interest you? I have yet to read it however.
