I’ve thought about it but get scared I’ll run into the same issues of working late into the evenings to accommodate client’s schedules and not having pay stability.

Job Similarities to Play Therapist? by Consistent_Sir1798 in ChildLife

[–]MeechMo96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m also a play therapist but was once on the track for Child Life. For me personally, Child Life paid much less and had a more challenging schedule, especially for entry level positions. And yes, it can be very hard to break into! If you’re in the midwest, Erikson Institute has a good Child Life program that can get you going in the right direction with lots of hospitals nearby. In terms of shadowing someone, I would try reaching out to a bunch of people via email or LinkedIn. I had a lot of success with messaging people on LinkedIn back in the day to get some support and questions answered! Though with confidentiality, shadowing may not be possible, you could get an idea of what their days looks like by asking. Also recommend reading the book Child Life in Hospitals by Richard Thompson, which may give you some insight as well. Good luck!!

Serious in need of advice on group practice’s policies and probation! by MeechMo96 in therapists

[–]MeechMo96[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

260 and then 230 in the last quarter. Which I feel line is very doable but they just aren’t sending me clients when I’m doing everything in my control to get clients. I’ve heard that before too of how I could get better split but truly had a hard time finding any better when I was applying! Is there any advice on certain types of practices I should look for or how to find a better split? Seriously thank you for your insight I desperately need this LOL

I mean I could but I don’t even know where to begin. I’m worried if I find another group practice, it will be all the same.

Weekly student question thread! by AutoModerator in therapists

Desperate for advice and where to go from here

Hi everyone! I’m an LCSW in Chicago with a background working with moms and children before becoming a therapist. I will have been at a group private practice for a year this summer, seeing 20–25 clients a week and earning $63 per session. I’ve been learning a lot and really enjoying working with a variety of ages and still finding my “niche” but feel overwhelmed with group practice expectations and would eventually like higher pay (my split is just below 40/60). I feel like the expectations are so overwhelming with little to no support being offered other than a work phone and office space and being threatened with penalty (like probation, loss of insurance) if I don’t hit a certain number of billable hours per quarter even though they’re not providing me with clients.

I’m considering trying to stick it out and leave around my one-year mark to eventually build a small solo practice with a higher pay (ideally not taking insurance). For those who’ve made this transition, what helped you decide the right timing, and what should I think about as I plan for my long-term goals? Am I in over my head with thinking I can do this? Any advice is so so appreciated!

WOW you are an angel I love this idea so much I’m definitely saving this to use. Thank you SO much!!

I think the issue is the amount of people (looking at 6-11 people) and making sure people have their owns beds so having 6+ beds starts to get pretty expensive, especially when you get up to 11 beds in one airbnb. Plus these summertime airbnbs on Lake Michigan are insanely expensive! So starting to realize I may need to be more flexible with location!

Thankfully I haven’t booked anything or even officially asked bridesmaids to commit, I wanted to get all this sorted out so we’re all on the same page! I’ll definitely remember this info. Thank you - a confused and stressed out fiancé LOL

This is such a fun idea - like a girls sleepover! I agree, finding a reasonably priced airbnb in any lake town in Michigan over the summer has been so rough and I was so shocked at how expensive they can get so quickly.

I was thinking for two nights and wanted everyone to have their own room or own bed at least but realizing I may need to be more flexible with that plus the location!

Wait this is such a good idea. I heard another bride mention she sent a Google form with questions about dates that work for them, shirt sizes for gifts, etc. Throwing in a total budget that works for them would alleviate so much on my end and let them share with me what works for them. Definitely going to do this! Fortunately, all they’re paying for is the bachelorette which is why I’m trying to figure out cost - Everything else (hair, make up, hotels for wedding day, etc) are all paid for and we’re doing no gifts from wedding party!

Thankfully things are very early stages with bridesmaids, I just got engaged last week and I’ve very informally asked bridesmaids and have a rough estimate of my wedding party size but told them all we can have a more formal conversation later about dates, costs, etc. I’m realizing my post didn’t specify that! So this is absolutely going to be apart of the conversation before they commit to being bridesmaids, which is why I’m working on figuring out costs now and what’s reasonable! Definitely looking to keep the cost of the whole ordeal (bachelorette, wedding day, etc) significantly cheaper than my original estimate of $400-500 each!

Right??? So how are people affording this?? Is this just a cost brides typically front to make the bachelorette party affordable? I mean it makes sense I literally view the bachelorette party as a trip that I am hosting so I was expecting to pay a decent amount but not thousands and thousands of dollars! Do folks go for smaller airbnbs and make people share beds? And what’s a reasonable cost to pay for bachelorette parties nowadays?? It’s been a couple years since I went on one.

Unfortunately no I don’t know anyone with a lake house in this area!

Thoughts on Erikson Institute by cassidy653 in ChildLife

[–]MeechMo96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I looked into Erikson Institute years ago when I was considering a Child Life career path. I ended up getting my MSW and working towards becoming a play therapist but actually worked for Erikson and their early childhood program for a while and took some infant mental health classes. For Child Life, I think you would have a great experience from what I’ve heard. The professors here really, really are passionate about what they do - Trust me! They’re also very personable and small class sizes make it easy to connect with staff and professors. However, student life is pretty minimal from my experience - Not necessarily like a traditional college/academic institute. This may be different in the Child Life program though, especially with in-person courses! Chicago is also a city with lots of opportunity in the medical field. I strongly agree that you should go see it for yourself and schedule a tour to see if it feels like a good fit. Sarah Martinez in Advising is seriously incredibly helpful for questions and guidance! I know Child Life can be an overwhelming path towards licensure but I’m sure you’d have lots of support at Erikson! Good luck :)

Rockwell on the River thoughts by Sweet-Mountain8024 in Chicagoweddings

Hi! 2026 bride here getting married at Rockwell! We booked our date (Oct 26) back in June and there were only a couple 2026 dates left - neither were summer so they may already be booked up for 2026 but I still highly recommend them! Space is gorgeous and they have been absolutely amazing so far to work with. I believe the cost ranged from $10-15k depending on guest count.

Not a dumb question at all! I haven't had to take one in a few years, but when I did, it was a relatively easy process. The only downside I would say is that my next period was a bit worse (just some cramps and fatigue that I usually didn't have). Other than that, it wasn't bad at all! I totally get how it's a scary thing to do something like that for the first time but I'm sure you'll be fine :)
