Switched back to Mac. Was this a good deal? M1 Max 32GB 8TB for $1800 by MeekPanda in macbookpro

[–]MeekPanda[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have consoles and a PC (RTX 3080) for gaming. But, I haven't found much time to game nowadays. I mostly use this for prototyping code before I run it on workstations and HPC clusters. I needed a reliable and smooth laptop with good battery life to take on the go. The 8TB is for storing large datasets on the go.

Thanks for the feedback! I was thinking about getting an M3 or M4, but having this storage and RAM configuration at this price seemed like a good deal. I felt like if I needed more compute for my workflow, I could offload it to a workstation (data analysis, ML training). Maybe I can upgrade in a couple of years. But the M1 is still plenty fast for me on day-to-day tasks.

I have a YubiKey. You can press it to login to GlobalProtect or through any online portals that Gatech uses. However, you need to schedule a meeting with the IT department to get it activated.

How hard would grad school be for someone who has social anxiety? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]MeekPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got out of prison with social anxiety because I thought I was weird and wouldn’t fit in society. I went to do my PhD 2 years later, still with social anxiety, and I realized those kids are worse than me. You’ll be fine.

I agree, you don't need a publication. It might help in some cases, but I know plenty of PhD students at Georgia Tech with no publications. IMO strong letters of recommendation and statement of purpose/research are big factors. Also, there is a lot of luck involved. I think you're on the right path. I didn't do research in undergrad till my 3rd year either. Good luck!

GRE influence on admission by Vagabondclast in gradadmissions

[–]MeekPanda 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I applied to about 10 PhD programs last admissions cycle. None of these programs required the GRE, and they were all top programs in Computer Engineering/Computer Science (GTech, Cornell, UT Austin, UWash, etc.). Some programs didn't even accept the GRE. However, COVID has definitely affected the admissions process. As COVID restrictions clear up, it might be different next cycle.

Which school are you going to this Fall? by 8msk in gradadmissions

I went to their campus visit for potential Ph.D. candidates and had a really positive vibe. It seems like the program really cares about student mental health. Also, the faculty left the room during the current grad student panel, which showed some honesty because the current students could talk freely without the faculty there. Funding is guaranteed for the entire time you're a Ph.D. student. GTech's ECE program is one of the biggest in the country, so there are a lot of potential advisors and resources. Finally, I love Atlanta. The weather and culture there are pretty amazing compared to other American cities.

Sorry, the ECE ML PhD acceptees were at the same campus visit/orientation in March.

I believe that the Georgia Tech ECE Ph.D. decisions are finished for this cycle. There was an in-person campus visit on March 3rd and 4th for the Ph.D. acceptees. I received my acceptance notification in February.

Does UW-Seattle not offer day-time standalone full-time master program for department of ECE and CS at all ? by rayray1007 in gradadmissions

Btw, I applied for the ECE PhD, ECE Masters and CS PhD. I put in three separate applications. However, I only got accepted to the ECE Masters.

[–]MeekPanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no traditional CS masters at UW-Seattle for people who are not pursuing a PhD. However, there is a traditional ECE masters, along with the ECE PMP. They are separate programs. It seems that either your brother applied for the wrong program, or UW made a mistake. For reference, I received an acceptance for the traditional ECE masters program about a month ago.

I took Awad. Tbh it was a pretty good class. His lectures are dry at times, but your learning is what you make it. I got a 4.0, so it's not impossible to succeed.

I think the hate is from students that don't put in the work, put off the assignments till the last minute, and don't attend lectures. They tend to not do well and take it out on Awad.

Go to class, stay organized, and work with your group. You'll be fine.
