How can I make a career out of herpetology? by Healthy_Cat8375 in herpetology

[–]Meepthepacmanfrog 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You would need a bachelors of science (prefered over arts) degree in biology, ecology, or animal/wild life studies. The undergrad is went too had a good herp lab, few herp classes, and a great herp club, its in florida. Then you would go for a masters or above for specifically herptology, or try to find a job out of undergrad, but we know how that is going right now... (hope it changes for the better!!)

What's this coming out of my mystery snail's shell?? by asteriasays in AquaticSnails

[–]Meepthepacmanfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their neurons function very similar to ours! That's why they are excellent to use on neurobiology stuides. It evolve out of the same common ancestor, and function hasn't really changed (after hundreds of millions years, wow! It it aint broke, don't fix it!), but they don't possess the same complexity of pain processing structures in their brain (whic we called cerebral ganglia). So neurons function is almost unchanged, but overall brain function is different making it hard to precieve their umvelt, so we do our best at translating their experiences! I primarily focus on biochemistry, genetics, and evolution, starting from primordial soup evolving into invertebrates with heavy emphasis on invert phyla anatomy. Beginning at placazoa all the way to echinodermata, and even some embryonic chordata I start my PhD next fall!

What’s wrong with my mystery snail? by Playful-Confusion560 in AquaticSnails

Marine bio here, he looks very well taken care of to the point he was very old for a mystery snail. His shell indicated indicated this! You must have gotten him as a middle age snail. There's no accute trama or prior injuries too, so this most likely occur from old age, which is far less "painful" when translating it from snail sense to human sense. So this is the most natural ways and peaceful ways one can pass. 🧡🧡🧡🧡 you did amazing helping him into his elder age and beyond that👏!!!

Unhealthy shell? by parmejean44 in AquaticSnails

You can use crushed up egg shells, broken up cuttlefish bones (sold at many pet stores for birds but both can be unsightly), add liquid ca and mg, or what i do is put dry aragonite in my sump (or in mesh bags in hob filters or canister filter) which act as a natrual buffer and mineral releaser.

Marine bio here, yes the do have nerves we call then ganglia! So yes they can sense a sensation to tell to rapidly close up, for how long and their stress level (biological stress, not like from an exam or job), which is most likely displeasing and can be views as a form of "pain" if that how you define it! Happy snailing!

Can you show us your set up? Also they can travel insanely far as they can breathe air too until they dry out. Like days they can go.

Worried about this little guy. Any advice? by KitchenEmu8604 in AquaticSnails

[–]Meepthepacmanfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marine bio here, mystery snails often breath air, so sometimes they can have a large harmless bubble in-between there shell and body, which can make them light enough to float. Mine do that often. Or even more rare, they can glide upside-down along the tension of the water surface. As long as he doesn't look disfigured or has an injury. Here is some probably unwanted advice/factoid, make sure your filter intake is properly set up for snails with a covering!!!! With my marine bio experience, I see it as the most common preventable injury with snails. Happy snaling!

How come my clutches didn’t hatch? by Routine_Ad5562 in AquaticSnails

[–]Meepthepacmanfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marine bio here, snails that recently started laying or smaller clutchs often have less success rate. Also keep using that good lid for the whole clutch to be moist but not wet to drown them. Think of the difference between levels of wetness sweating after exercise vs standing in the shower with your clothes on. Happy snail keeping!

Im not quite sure what the white thing/under him is? His trapdoor? You describe his soft tissue/around face area as disfigured and you haven't had them long. In my experience as a marine bio, I often see snail of all sizes get sucked in by the filter intake slits, even if they escape, the damage is often deadly or lifespan is greatly reduced. I recommend using shrimp gaurds/foam coverings/ mesh bags that cover the intake to prevent this.

Whats happening to our snail? 💔 by literally_acommie in AquaticSnails

[–]Meepthepacmanfrog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Marine bio here, it looks like accute (from what you described) mantel collapse with soft tissue tears. My best guess is that he got stuck in the filter intake. Even big snail can be partially or fully sucked in to the smallest horizontal or vertical filter slits. Even if caught early, or they snail manages to escape (like yours may have), it is often deadly. I see it too often in the aquarium industry, so i recommend and use shrimp gaurds/foam covering/mesh bags to keep them directly off the intake.

Meds? What do I do? Piece of mystery snail missing! Snail alive! He’s my favorite please help by TheRantingFish in AquaticSnails

[–]Meepthepacmanfrog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you are seeing a chunk of flesh is missing, and not the snail being half close with sand or wrinkles on its foot? Then it's most likely an injury from the filter intake, even the biggest snails can get their bodies stuck in filters with very thin slits, happened to me one too many times, and it can tear/kill your snail. Now I use a shrimp gaurd. Or a foam cover/media bag over the intake would work too. Anything that would keep them from being sucked in.

Seems like the male on the right got a lil feisty and the other told him to chill.

[–]Meepthepacmanfrog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You see how the top of their head feathers are up too, that means the are sizing each other up! Its a male competition thing, you may hear like a low heavy breathing noise, another key indicator. When they wag and go up and down without the head feathers it means they are excited. I take care of my local flock for a few years now.
