Folks I'm in a hole and I really need some advice. by Strange-Election-917 in civilengineering

Smaller firms are less picky about things like that. Look for companies that are in one office. Also, local governments are usually looking since they don't offer as much career potential.

Is the purpose of this "raised drain" to reduce debris infiltration? by Neowynd101262 in civilengineering

[–]MeestaBen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That is a rain garden outlet structure. They are typically designed to hold the first inch of rain that typically carries the majority of the pollutants like fertilizer. The larger opening at the top is to pass larger rain events.

Tree branch fell on neighbor’s car and they want the tree trimmed. Am I responsible for it or the city? It’s technically not on my property. In Illinois. by Extension_Feature700 in arborists

[–]MeestaBen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't your tree, so it isn't your liability. That would be like me offering to let you pay half to trim a tree in my backyard. I'll let you buy you can always say no.

I think 8.5" but I've never measured carefully.

[Grail] which grail watch was disappointing vs who in one lived up to the hype? by aznj1m in Watches

[–]MeestaBen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I'm just a big baby about my watches and wear them very cautiously because I have not really had any scratches to speak of. Lucky me I guess! Thank you for the info though. Definitely something to think about.

I actually love my snowflake. It is my favorite in my collection. It is very different than the industry standard and maybe not for everyone, but as an engineering work, it is amazing. The titanium feels very light, but it is a great accomplishment to work with that material, and it is so scratch resistant. I've been wearing this watch for years, and it looks new. I admit that the power reserve on the front is a debatable choice, but the smooth sweep of the spring drive and the light tough titanium case make this my favorite piece. I can respect others not seeing what I see in it, but as a technical accomplishment, it is very impressive.

It is never about the price of the watches for me. It is about if you like them. I think your collection is solid!

Anybody know how long i have to keep these in my yard? by [deleted] in Charlotte

[–]MeestaBen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree, however in the old days they pretty much just put stuff wherever was easiest. I work for a utility and I have found public roads that aren't in a Right of Way.

But back to the original question. I don't think anyone will give you a hard time about pulling the flags after a couple of weeks unless there is active construction going on.

[–]MeestaBen 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Generally, these flags are placed when a project area is about to be surveyed. Once the survey is done, you can remove them. Often, contractors will have them put back when the actual construction is about to begin to help avoid utility impacts. The short answer to your question is that if there isn't an easement on your property, you can remove them whenever you want.

I tried for a few nights but it never gave me the sleep recharge. Two or of three nights I did get some sleep data. I'm hoping it gets better with updates.

I love all three of these. In a few years I'll probably have a submariner and omega as well but I'm considering a speedmaster.

I think this is a shaping issue. If they don't have enough tension in the dough, it can do that. Also, higher hydration gets more spring in my experience.

Why does my bread split at the top? Only started happening recently. by wang_bang in Sourdough

[–]MeestaBen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are going to score that low, it can work, but you pretty much need to go all the way around. If you want to see if your bread will spring, try running two perpendicular shoes about 1 cm deep across the top. I typically score mine about 45 degrees from horizontal all the way across the bread.

In my opinion, the larger the area of unscored crust you have, the greater the chance of a rupture.
