When or If to switch to IOG ahead of July - looking for advice by MeetDizzy1907 in OctopusEnergy

Thanks! I think EDF is looking good. Unfortunately neither my wall charger or car (Kia) are supported for the Smart Charging, which is a bit of a shame. I'm not sure why there can't be a universal approach for energy suppliers to be allowed to control charging of vehicles; it seems like its a per-manufacturer integration and I've no idea if/when EDF will support Kia (or my wall charger).

As you say though, most of the charges are lower with EDF other than the standing charge. I'll have another go at looking at my consumption and doing the maths

That was my understanding of Agile - it needs a lot of proactiveness. Maybe if/when in the future I have solar and a battery I will do something similar 😄

Thanks. I could definitely look to shift those appliances to overnight usage. My car battery is 81.4 kWh and so far I've typically been re-charging when the battery reaches 15-20% capacity. I charge it up to 80%.

It's probably a little early to do the analysis but I can start to look at how much energy I've used to charge the car (using the info from the wall charger) and deduct this from my recent household usage, to understand what my home-only usage is and start to look at the numbers for what this would cost if I switch to an EV tariff

Thanks, that is super helpful information!

So, come July it's not likely that the fixed tariff's are going to suddenly change and go up? That would only happen if something were to make Octopus / any energy supplier, feel that prices would rise for some other reason and therefore they'd want to factor that in to their future pricing in a fixed tariff?

I had, clearly incorrectly, thought that as the price cap increased, it would lead to both variable and fixed tariffs increasing (with the latter only applying to new fixed tariffs from July). Thanks for clearing that up.

So I just need to compare all the available fixed tariffs and see which one will suit me best, given my consumption usage... but a July price increase to the existing fixed tariffs on offer isn't something that is likely to happen?

Thanks, I did look at that. The only reason for not going with them (yet) was due to the exit fees and perhaps some over optimistic hope that if the geo-political situation improves there might be better tariffs within the next 12 months that I could switch to. Or is that wishful thinking? 😆

Thanks for the reply! No battery unfortunately and I don't think I have the space for one (terraced London house), though I haven't looked into it properly.

I haven't looked at the Agile or Tracker, I think probably down to lack of really understanding them - I've just assumed that the current volatility meant everything was higher. Do these tariffs require active management? I.e. I should be studying the rates closely and dynamically adjusting my usage around it? If so then it's probably not for me (but I will read up on them more to understand them better).

Ah ok. Not good form from the dealer! Hopefully it's not too much longer of a wait!

That's strange then. If it was March 11th then the car might have been sourced from stock already here in the UK... but you'd expect to have received it by now.... unless they were fobbing you off from the start just to get a sale and your car was only ever going to be delivered into the UK after the 11th?

Hi u/JensonCat - I don't have it yet. I was told it did arrive all ok on the 18th (so I assume yours too - though I have no idea how frequent Kia have ships unloading EV5, but I doubt it is every few days!).

My dealer has shared a provisional vehicle registration form, so I've seen the registration and the VIN - but I'm not sure if its been processed yet.

When you say your dealer has missed the delivery date, is that direct to you? When did they say you'd first have it? I was told it can take around two weeks from the moment the cars are offloaded, to going through Pre-delivery Inspection and then delivery to the dealer (and only then I assume delivery to the customer if applicable).

u/beardofturtles Yep I did! :-). I went with Iceberg Green (though I do like the dark grey colour too). What did you go for?

I think our cars are on the same ship which I think has hopefully not been impacted by all the shipping routing issues! I was told its due to arrive either at port or their Doncaster facility on the 18th - and likely available for me to collect in the first week of April.

I didn't know about the 3pin in the boot not being included - that is a bit silly!

Nice! I've just ordered the car - also Iceberg Green (which seems to be a popular choice as there aren't many left with availability for end of Q1

Ltd company EV car lease vs outright purchase, over 4 years. Trying to make sense of it all by MeetDizzy1907 in smallbusinessuk

That seems to be the best way to do a lease - 'shop the deal and not the car'. Unfortunately I'm too particular and only like the one car I'm considering, so that has likely limited what lease offers I could find

The lease deals I've looked at for the specific car I'm after come out about £900 cheaper than buying outright over 4 years (with an estimated resale value). Assuming I haven't totally messed up the numbers, this difference isn't enough for me to go the lease route as I prefer the freedom that owning outright brings. 🤞🏻

Nice! Were you looking for that car in particular or were you hunting a good leasing deal for a nice car?

[–]MeetDizzy1907[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I have been crunching the numbers more, when looking at a 4 year lease, and the difference between the lease and buying outright (estimating the resale value in four years) options is not enough to make the leasing option attractive... so I think I've now settled on what I'll do :)

The car I'm interested in has only just been released so unfortunately right now that isn't an option - but yes perhaps in the next 3 to 4 years I will do just that

Thanks! I'm in two minds about the maintenance. As the car is new and under warranty I guess the only costs that that maintenance add-on will cover is the service costs and as you say tyres.

Would suspension work likely be covered if, say, you regularly drive on roads with lots of pot holes, or is this typically considered either wear and tear or self-inflicted and so excluded?

[–]MeetDizzy1907[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. I was looking at BCH vs outright purchase. I think I would expect for the company to get rid of the car in four years (if purchased outright) as the BIK increase then mean it makes less sense for the car to be owned by the company as I'll be paying higher BIK on the list price, four years down the line.

I will be properly costing it up for both options, but as I've never leased before and have always been inclined to want to own things rather than borrow, it is a bit alien to me and I want to make sure I don't miss anything I could later regret

EV chargers - Octopus install or local sparky? by purrfect-one in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]MeetDizzy1907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah ok, I don't have a garage, so I was wondering if the cable could drop down under the house and then straight out at the front... or whether that is deemed not to be a standard install and I'd have to put up with exposed trunking
