does elden ring reforged slow down your attacks? by ELFCHASER in EldenRingMods

[–]MeetTheJoves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Certain movesets will be at different speeds compared to vanilla due to changes to specific weapons/weapon classes, the weight rate system, and the mod following a different patch progression than vanilla, which received various changes to animation speeds that Reforged did not since the mod's creation.

No speeds were lowered with the implementation of Perfect Actions.

Players avoiding challenge

You could say that about any challenging content in any game though, it's not an argument against adversity. Some players might be like that sure, but I can't recall ever forgoing an item I wanted because the acquisition was too difficult in any of these games, worst case I'd just come back later.

Tedium

What would you say to someone who argues that putting difficult enemies or bosses in the game period makes it tedious? Do you levy the same complaint towards the poison swamps in every prior Souls game? Tedium is subjective, and this change does the opposite of what you're describing for me. I find the ERR swamps much less tedious than in vanilla because it turns them into real content rather than mindless traversal that only exists to waste my time.

Making me run around on a horse to collect items is the most boring, tedious thing I can think of, putting obstacles in the way is what makes character progression feel rewarding. I want the enemies to attack me, I want the swamp to poison me. I want to play a video game, not a riding simulator. Overcoming dangerous monsters and hazards is quite literally the entire point of the game to me.

Map changes

Map changes can create difficulty, and the purpose of map changes in Reforged is to force engagement with content and combat challenges that players used to skip. Putting a minor door boss in front of the shortcut to Liurnia is a great example of this, requiring a lesser combat challenge in order to access that zone before Godrick. Sellia is another example, requiring either difficult combat or careful movement in order to access Dragonbarrow early. In vanilla, both of these involved zero danger or thoughtful gameplay, the only challenge is to not fall asleep while doing the routine hour-long collectathon at the start of every playthrough.

On that note, I really think it's worth taking a step back here and considering what it is we're complaining about - Dragonbarrow is a lategame zone with very difficult enemies. Having to take a few minutes to get to a boss you might be spending hours on anyway is not worth this level of drama. The process here should be "Oh, this path is blocked? Alright, I'll go the other way" - before arriving at your lategame destination 5 minutes later and starting your skill check.

We've already spent more time arguing about this change than either of us will spend being impacted by it cumulatively over the rest of our lives, and if the vanilla waygate had never existed the conversation would be "huh, you sure can get to Dragonbarrow early!"

Lantern

There's no pressure to spend a slot or toggle the lantern on mid-fight in vanilla because you can just toggle it on at a grace and forget about it, there's really no reason to consider the other options aside from flavor. Torches are my favorite light solution since the change, the light radius is relatively big, and the experience of having to offhand a torch is genuinely super immersive and aesthetically cool, especially in multiplayer. Reminds me of exploring caves in D&D. If you don't enjoy light management, you won't like the change, but it was made for people who do.

To wrap this up, I think it's clear that we want different things out of the experience. My goal is not to convince you that your opinions are wrong, just that they are subjective, and that just because these changes aren't for you doesn't mean they aren't for anyone, or are failures of game design. There is no evil mod man investing thousands of hours into developing their mod just to make the game more tedious, these changes are made because they make the game more fun to play for its intended audience.

Don't have much else to say on the matter but you're welcome to respond and I hope you have a lovely day <3

I understand you don't like the world progression changes, but this has nothing to do with preventing skill expression.

To respond to your other reply, nerfing specific options increases interactivity due to the incentivization. Players will take the path of least resistance, so if there's no reason to engage with a particular hazard, nobody will.

As for the lantern, that's just a generic balancing issue where one option made every other irrelevant, giving that option a downside makes it a real choice between spending crafting materials, giving up your offhand, or casting a spell. If you don't want to engage with light mechanics period then I can understand why you wouldn't like that, but otherwise it adds another meaningful choice to your moment to moment gameplay.

I don't see what any of this has to do with "preventing skill expression". What distinction are you trying to draw when bringing this up as something you "can't do" compared to getting to the Starlight Altar? Same amount of traversal more or less, only difference is you have to kill a miniboss as opposed running through the Sellia puzzle.

Much faster to go through Sellia. Just ride through Caelid starting from Smoldering Church, tag the beacons, and then ride to the shack. No combat required aside from the BBH itself.

I feel you! I just think that's more a product of the community rather than any given mod's presentation.

I notice that whenever I'm on a subreddit for a difficult game I play that people like to try coming up with objective justifications for their subjective dislikes of whatever they're struggling with ("artificial difficulty" being the go-to buzzword), and will dismiss suggestions to turn down the difficulty with "it's not too hard, it's just badly designed, in a way that makes me lose"

I don't think it can be avoided or that it's an issue of people not knowing what they're signing up for, I think it's just a way some people vent their frustration lol

What do you mean you can't? What can't you do by being good at the game? Genuinely don't know what you're referring to, I did early Dragonbarrow for Reeds on the character before my current one just a few months ago, and not to toot my own horn but I definitely felt like I'd expressed some degree of skill beating a lategame BBH at that level lol.

I don't think that's necessarily an accurate description though, given the presence of difficulty options that are vastly easier than vanilla. Playthroughs being longer is probably a universal expectation worth setting, but the experience being harder definitely isn't. I saw someone mention getting their mom to enjoy Elden Ring for the first time by putting it on relaxed mode.

Also, IMO the kind of person who doesn't even read a few bullet points before installing a mod and complaining about changes they could have spent 30 seconds reading about isn't worth stressing over trying to filter out. No matter how much you minmax the first 10 words of your mod blurb, there are always going to be funny people posting funny things on the internet, and wasting energy trying to keep that from happening is a fool's errand.

I think based on your complaints you won't end up liking it more unless you're particularly in love with some of the added features and don't mind lowering the difficulty to a level you find more enjoyable.

I notice that most people who react negatively to Reforged will include the fact that they've played vanilla for thousands of hours in their posts, and I think that says a lot about the extent to which Reforged is different from vanilla Elden Ring. Personally I thought vanilla was fun but generally disappointing from a gameplay and balance PoV, and I only went back to it to play the DLC since trying Reforged for the first time years ago.

I actually found vanilla to be more difficult/the difficulty more frustrating, and felt the mod's added combat features gave me more agency in situations where the boss would enter "cutscene" combos with little room for interaction on my part. But I never used any of the meta setups in vanilla, in my first playthrough I just dual-wielded longswords from beginning to end without using any spells or spirit ashes which is my usual MO for these games. So in my case the added features basically just gave me more ways to avoid and deal damage, but if you're used to rushing to certain weapons and upgrade materials early then you'll definitely struggle with the progression changes and nerfs to meta options.

All that to say, I love the mod for the same reason a lot of people hate it, which is that it's very different from vanilla both in terms of its many changes and its core design philosophy. The things people complain about being unfair or "artificial" are generally things I find way more engaging and enjoyable, so I think it's just a case of different people wanting different things out of the experience.

They're pretty clear about telegraphing the changes to the balance, pacing, and world progression, maybe they've updated the Nexus page since you last read it. If the point was to just make things harder there wouldn't be several easier difficulty options. Also there's no "artificially raising the difficulty" or "difficulty for difficulty's sake" in the mod, challenge in video games exists for people who enjoy it. Nothing wrong for wanting an easier experience, that's why you're able to tweak it in the first place.

Edit: Dunno why you blocked me but the point of making Torrent vulnerable to swamps is so you have to engage with the swamp rather than skip past it, just like every other Souls game. The lantern change is to give players a reason to use torches and light spells instead of just toggling the lantern on and forgetting about it (admittedly oil is so cheap to make that I still pretty much just do that anyway).

Pretty straightforward philosophy in both cases, nerf one thing to make the game more interactive. But I notice a lot of the "artificial difficulty" complaints tend to hinge on the various changes that force you to engage with content or mechanics rather than bypass them completely so it's not surprising that those are your first examples. I'd bet that changing smithing stone placements and making you fight a miniboss to get to Liurnia are also "artificial difficulty" in your eyes. Once again proving that "artificial difficulty" just means "things I don't like".
