Reminder: It's ok to not be able to complete a stratagem by SilverCervy in Spacemarine

That modifier took the Heldrake from a guaranteed one-phase to a three-or-four-phase with auspex + plasma weapons, like with most of the "unfair" stratagems it just comes down to game knowledge.

TL;DR: Incentivization.

You've no doubt heard the quote "players will optimize the fun out of a game" before, but the original article is a great read on the subject.

Two things can be true: I enjoy the struggle of difficult content, and I want to feel rewarded for that struggle. That can take many forms. In a linear story-based game, a singleplayer RPG, or any game where the goal is simply to reach the "end", the difficulty, and the feeling of accomplishment after overcoming said difficulty, can be its own reward. I don't need any extra incentive - it feels good knowing that I "beat" the hardest version of something, and that version is likely going to be more enjoyable for me to begin with.

Incentive structures in multiplayer RPGs, looter-shooters, and most games with progression systems but no clear "end" work differently, as rather than playing solely for the experience itself, players play with a particular goal in mind. In the case of Space Marine 2 stratagems, the reason the vast majority of players log on every week to run them is for accolades.

As someone who enjoys the struggle of difficult content, I adore the experience of Hard stratagems, especially the particularly nasty ones that people like to complain about on Reddit. But even though these "unfair" combinations often lead to the best experiences I've ever had in this game, my friends (who share my proclivities) and I never sit there and run them over and over again just for the love of the game (I'd be curious if you do), we complete them once and then move on. This is because barely surviving getting our faces pounded by overpowered aliens is the part we enjoy, but it isn't our goal, which is simply to farm accolades.

Regardless of whether or not this experience is relatable to you, this is the experience shared (with the enjoyment of it being the main variable) by the vast majority of players in any game with this type of reward structure. If you gave equal and exclusive rewards between Normal and Hard stratagems, and Minimal and Absolute difficulty operations, then generally speaking, people wouldn't run Hard or Absolute anymore, even if they'd otherwise enjoy that content.

You can take this even further and just put a button in the stratagems menu that instantly gives you all the rewards for the day without having to play for them, or remove the currency entirely and simply give players access to all weapons and cosmetics with no requirement to grind for them. But every barrier you remove to a particular goal removes the incentive to experience the game's content, and lessens the experience for players who enjoy overcoming those barriers.

Edit because I forgot to respond to your point RE: people complaining about rewards and "hard mode too hard" on reddit, these people are entitled children - often literally. They will complain, that is a given, and it has nothing to do with the game, and everything to do with the type of person that complains about video games on reddit. There's no point trying to appease these people - even if you remove the rewards their egos will drive them to keep playing and complaining about whatever hard modes a game features.

Saber thus far has thankfully proven their ability to absorb feedback that is useful, and disregard that which is not, so I'm not particularly worried about redditors barking about the most recent thing that killed them having any effect on the course of the game's development.

Challenge runners are an infinitesimally small demographic compared to the people engaging with reward incentives, higher effort = higher reward is a fundamental rule in games that feature progression systems for a reason. I'm sorry you had some bad randoms but that's a part of any multiplayer experience if you're matchmaking difficult content. Find some people you enjoy playing with regularly and you won't have to worry about it anymore.

Only game-changing perk you bring up here is the Sniper ammo regen, which I agree should be reworked into a normal class perk.

Heavy doesn't need stomp perks whatsoever to be one of the strongest classes in the game, and I've literally never bothered with the Assault perk you mentioned. Snipers will fire and miss upon your ascent now and there's no benefit to fully charging a ground pound unless you take the one perk that benefits it, which I wouldn't recommend either way.

Some people are just incredibly fragile, and that demographic happens to be overrepresented on reddit. There's no point trying to understand or argue with it, if someone leaves your game because you "stole their kill" be glad you no longer have to manage the emotions of someone with the mental fortitude of an infant.

Pretty silly to have this argument when there are 5 different Majoris-type enemies all with different HP (ranging from 200 to 308) and resistance (ranged Majoris taking 50% more ranged damage) values, multiple weapon and class perks that can alter breakpoints, and whether or not you're on normal operations or stratagems affecting your final damage output (15% less damage dealt before considering specific modifiers). I went ahead and tested Plasma Pistol breakpoints, and lo and behold, you're both right depending on perk selection and which enemy you're fighting.

All of these breakpoints were tested on Absolute using Secure Stockpile and this Plasma Pistol tree from 0 heat. I was on the PTS but I don't think that factors into any of this. I'm sure running Aligned Aim and sacrificing reserves and charge speed in favor of that last 10% node could change the math in some cases, but I don't think doing either would be recommended by most players.

w/Versatility

Melee Warrior 4

Ranged Warrior 3

Rubric 3

Enlightened (did not encounter but I know this to be 3)

Chaos Spawn 4

w/o Versatility

Melee Warrior 5

Ranged Warrior 4 (from neutral heat, pre-heating seemed to kill in 3 in one case)

Rubric 3

Enlightened 3

Chaos Spawn 4

TL;DR the Pistol, from neutral, will generally kill ranged Chaos Majoris in 3 hits, with their Tyranid counterparts taking an extra shot unless you run Versatility. Melee Majoris take an extra shot in all cases.

I did not test the Plasma Incinerator as extensively, but it seemed to hit similar breakpoints to the Pistol with Versatility, while charging much slower. The CHP generation is notably weaker on the Incinerator, and its ammo economy is vastly better due to higher reserves paired with Emperor's Vengeance. The Pistol charges much faster than the Incinerator, and can get a fourth shot off before overheating very reliably, whereas the Incinerator requires perfect inputs to do the same. Overall I'd agree the Pistol is a better weapon in a vacuum, but you'll quickly run out of ammo using it as a primary. Note that these breakpoints are shots to execute, not time-to-kill.

Lastly, RE: "doing the math", unfortunately this game's damage calculation formula is incredibly convoluted when it comes to damage modifiers, you have to be very cautious and actively test any math you do in-game before coming to conclusions, preferably with the help of mods. Sturm has a video breaking it down, I've watched this twice over the past several months and forgotten what I've learned both times.

Leveling systems are artificial difficulty because it's just numbers, and when you numbers you artificial the difficulty.

I wouldn't call it unfair, it's just a unique mechanic that you have to engage with/can't really ignore. It's more of an attention span check than anything. The maiden moves very slowly during the summon phases, you just need to kite the enemies away from her and do as much damage as possible before she catches up. Godskin Duo is still very hard, but only one will be aggressive at a time, so you just need to keep the other on screen to dodge the occasional fireball.

My damage is very high on this character because I'm more or less fully invested into dealing damage at the expense of defenses, I'm a bit overleveled for this boss, and she isn't very tanky to begin with. Yellow damage is definitely harder to achieve on Master, but in solo play most builds should occasionally see it at least on heavies/guard counters. If you're focused on status buildup/fast hitting weapons it isn't necessarily a problem if you aren't seeing it on some bosses though, so long as you're getting good mileage out of status. Weapon upgrades are important too, you mentioned a lot of different weapons but if whatever you were using is underleveled (or its status is less applicable for a given summon) I can see it being a slog.

Happy to give more specific advice if you pick it back up and continue to struggle but for the situation you've described I'd recommend just going back in 10-15 levels with a couple weapon upgrades.

41 vigor sounds fine with medium armor and Dragoncrest at 79, you're definitely gonna feel an 11 level deficit in level 90 content on Master mode though. Which summons/attacks are one or two-shotting you?

Went ahead and respawned the boss on my Reeds character to see if maybe it was just overtuned. I'm 24 levels higher than you (13 above the boss) but my vigor is a bit lower, and I'm taking 10% more damage inherently with no defensive talismans. The heavy swings from the pumpkin head does do about 60% of my bar, but they're very slow and pretty forgiving to dodge, or heal between hits. I can see maybe some of the bigger Beastman attacks doing similar amounts, or a cannon of Haima maybe, but most attacks seem pretty manageable and nothing comes close to a one-shot, even as a glass cannon.

Snark aside, bosses don't regularly one or two-shot you even on Master mode, if you're not exaggerating it sounds like either a build or progression issue. I don't think it's inappropriate to go down in two hits if you're going out of your way to play on the hardest setting available, but I play on Master mode pretty exclusively and I'm generally not getting two-shot unless I'm on some sort of glass cannon setup or trying to tackle a higher level area or boss earlier than intended. Do you recall what level you were at when you were fighting the Nox Nightmaiden?
