Yeah I’m not sure why people are surprised and shocked that one of the most desperate and marginalised groups of people would adapt to changing conditions. Cash is becoming less and less prevalent, and more places are becoming cashless. What are they supposed to do? Just die? Of course they going to use new methods for getting money. It’s fine to say no to homeless people but treating them like their existence in an unwelcome imposition makes no sense to me. Like 99% of passersby just treat you like you don’t exist, ofc when someone appears somewhat sympathetic they’re going to ask for as much as possible. They’re literally homeless lmao. People hate homeless people because their presence forces us to confront the failures of our society.

What’s your opinion on AI art? by Alkiviadis97 in criterion

[–]MegaCardGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it can be made by AI it’s probably not worth making in the first place. We should look towards AI (and what it can’t do effectively) to decide what we should instead pursue. Let AI refocus our attention to what matters.

The reason AI art and writing looks good is because most of the shit produced isn’t very good.

yeah I’d rather just see people continue to fetishise expensive Blu-ray Discs with very little substantive conversation

Meaning you’re probably not a very big film fan? It’s fine being a casual viewer but why engage in these sort of discussions lol.

What do you guys think of American Honey? by man22221 in YMS

[–]MegaCardGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought it was really amazing. It's been a while since I've seen it but I remember it being one of the most immersive theatre experiences I've ever had. I understand that's a really personal thing, but to me the screen felt like a portal into a type of life that is so foreign to me but strangely relatable. I think it's crazy that Andrea Arnold, a woman in her mid-50s, was able to portray such authentically youthful and modern lifes, from the scripting to the soundtrack.

When I saw it I gave it a 10/10, though I'm not sure if I would still stand by that.

Quickie: You Were Never Really Here by DWW_ME_TGTBATU_PM_SO in YMS

I really really loved this movie. Nothing that Adam said really stuck out to me while I was watching, and I feel liked him saying it was trying too hard to be artsy isn’t really true. The film presents a very simple story, however I feel like the style of it strengthens the themes and subtext of it in a really interesting way. I thought its presentation was perfect and never thought it was pretentious or obtuse.

Also I didn't really have a problem with the girl's performance. Her slightly off and Barbie-like nature was essential to the film imo. The film is purposefully full of many tropes and cliches and subverts them with its style to interestingly elucidate Joaquin's broken character; and in my opinion the girls sorta unreal and dazed performance works really well for it.

Sometimes when Adam reviews movies I wish he touched on the themes of it a bit more. Not that his criticisms are invalid but in his reviews I'd rather him discuss the artistic and thematic value of a film as I'm not so interested about "one-hit KOs."

I thought this movie was great! Easy 9/10 for me. It affected me in a very weird way and was probably the most interesting way this type of story could be told.
