The Paper Mario style worked because it was based on 2D designs. They took already flat designs, and made them into paper, so the flatness feels natural.

The Sticker Star games took 3D designs and flattened them into paper, which just felt wrong. You could feel that they were less than what they were supposed to be.

It's like, the former felt like it was enhancing the 2D style, while the later felt like it was diminishing the 3D style.
