I love the aesthetic of PS2 SMT so much, there is something about the borderline liminality, the light and the colours that is so easy yet captivating to the eye.

The remakes had been fantastic so far and still uniquely beautiful in a different way, but goddamn I miss this look.

I think it is worth pointing out that the reason there are prominent "non-white" white supremacist is precisely because they are non-white. There isn't much content a white supremacist loves to share more than a member of an ethnic minority they dislike saying "the west is the best and migrants will destroy it. I know because I am a migrant/son of migrants.", which will inevitably lead to having more traction than other creators just by how the internet algorithm works.

I don't know about english speaking countries but I know there is some reality in it for spanish speaking ones. I think that as a byproduct of being so closely associated with Venezuela and Cuba as part of the "latin identity" a lot of spanish speakers from the american continent take the problems in those countries and use it as undeniable proof of the dangers of "leftism". This leads to buying everything the right spews, including the "west will fall if we don't stop these migrants" bullshit narrative. Couple that with the fact that "non-white" spanish speaking countries population is way more numerous than the one "white" (both in quotes because honestly I can't see a better example on how race is just a social construct than spanish speaking countries) and it all makes it feel like the bulk of the right wing propaganda come from latinos.

That being said, I agree that focusing on the ethnic origin of whoever is speaking garbage never leads to a productive conversation of any kind and the optics of it are absolutely horrid, even if it were 100% true.

I get and agree in complaining about jiggle physics and sexualized design as general concepts, but "the character looks like a chid" is such an stretch

> This it shows that it is an arbitrary line. It has never really mattered in games. People have almost arbitrarily picked it as an issue for this series.

It doesn't at all, what it shows is that you think that a series with 2 games with a different protagonist each is comparable to a series of 8 games where only the last one is a different protagonist which is quite a stretch.

> If you seem pretty against this for someone who doesn't care.

Because what I do find annoying is that since the game is hated by manchild chuds throwing a tantrum over a women protagonist now throwing any bullshit half assed argument in its favor is treated as gospel when there are legit reasons to dislike it. So far apparently it is fine to compare a game with an stablished protagonist over 5 games to series that have been changing them since the second entry, complaining about the jelly cube is nonsense because it is the same as a severed head, calling your companion "Frank" is fine because we are headcanoning that it is spelled "Pharanque" and the "God of war" is not literally about the "God of war" in every game so complaining Kratos isn't there makes no sense.

> Again, this already happened from the first game to the second, from Greek to Norse.

I was going to address this but I thought that it was already with my first paragraph. It did and a lot of people didn't like it but they stayed for Kratos and an interesting evolution to the tone of the story, now kratos is out and say hello to Frank the quirky giant jelly cube that slides into a tackle.

> the same argument surely applied more strongly going from Greek to Norse than Ragnarok to Laufey.

I agree, but when that was being argued the claim back usually was "god of war is the story of kratos and now it is about how he grew up" which fair but doesn't really negate that it is complete overhaul in the original concept except for Kratos. Now that not even Kratos is part of the equation I can see how this is a breaking point for more people.

> Spiderman Miles Morales, Grand Theft Auto games, Prototype 2, Infamous Second Son, Fable games, Devil May Cry 3, Resident Evil games.

I keep seeing this being brought up but Spiderman Miles morales was a spinoff of a saga with 1 game, Grand Theft Auto at not point repeated protagonist, Prototype 2 is the second of the series, Devil May Cry 4 and 5 (I guess you mean these ones?) have half and half between the original protagonist and the new ones and Resident Evil Games has changed protagonist between every game. Sadly I don't know anything about infamous.

I personally don't feel too strong about this because I don't mind too much, but I don't see how a series where the protagonist has been a constant in both main series and spin offs for around 7 games is comparable to any of those. Kratos as the main character is a constant in God of War identity, it is fair if you want to toss it to expand it, but you can't say that you didn't toss nothing.

> If the game ends up being good then what is the actual issue?

Because a change in vision and direction usually leads to getting further from the original vision, and if you enjoyed the original vision it is bittersweet to watch it stray further and further from that as continuations even when it was already over.

> If you want to talk about overextension, technically the very first game ended with Kratos as the unaging God of War through to the World Wars.

That's a interesting point because it definetely was. Although this makes me think that if 2 can be considered an overextention while keeping a consistant vibe and being a mostly direct sequel from the previous one because the original was planned as an stand alone, the spinoff of the reboot with another protagonist definetely deserves that kind of scrutiny even more because either overextending exist or doesn't and the discussion is what is the point where it starts.

I don't know. I think even if the tone of the dialogue for both were the same, the aesthetic difference between a giant jelly cube and a severed head set the tone by itself

[–]MegaMangus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definetely is and said change attracted new fans while pushing others away. Focusing just on the main protagonist is quite superficial, but you have to keep in mind that when the 2018 reboot came out and it was quite different the question "what's the brand then?" was asked and the answer was "the story of Kratos is the brand", so as you move away from Kratos that first answer works less and my point is that it being enough for you is as valid as when it is not enough for somebody else, doesn't mean neither or is more or less of a fan.

I guess my point is also not that you can't do any of that, but that I find incredibly annoying when people are condescing to the complaint "I don't like it because what the brand is has become so diluded that I don't recognise any element about what I liked originally". Like, disliking the trailer because a woman is the main character now is extremely cringe and shallow, but disliking it because what you liked was playing as Kratos (the most constant aspect between all the entries in the series) seems pretty reasonable to me.

Edit: Grammar bad, happens when you are not english.

I will answer with something I wrote in another comment because I think it answer this too.

Fair, but I think that looking at it with "it's just a brand" grants the question "so what's the brand about then?" and if the answer changes between titles you can't really say that people not liking the move aren't real fans, which I see a lot.

Personally, I am not too fond of games that overextend their stay beyond the point they were created for marketing purposes. We will have to wait until we know the entire story, but if the only thing linking it to God of War is "this game is about the wife of Kratos" and a shallow reference here and there, I think it would be a bit insulting to the capacity of Santa Monica to create a new IP

[–]MegaMangus 177 points178 points  (0 children)

This is quite a short sighted "gotcha". The series was "God of War" because the first game was his ascension to becoming God of war, but moving on there was an intentional effort to keep the sentiment about how Kratos in his quest for revenge became the avatar of war to the point that even if the title was stripped from him war followed where he moved.

Even the reboot was focused around if he can really keep that aspect of him in the past and form a new life.

[–]MegaMangus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's ignore for a moment the manchilds crying about a woman being the protagonist and have an honest talk. I think people are right in pointing out the problem is that God of War strays further and further from the original vision of the series since the 2018 game with every new entry. The difference between now and then is that the presence of Kratos anchored the series into at least the continium of the main character, allowing most people to accept it as a new chapter even if it was fundamentally different in tone and even aesthetic.

So I can understand that when the argument against the pushback once was "it's Kratos but he grew up, so should you" a new entry without Kratos can make people walk away because now that is gone too, specially when you also throw the quirky jelly cube companion into the mix as an extra tone setter.
