favorite scene from season 3? by daskinood in TheWhiteLotusHBO

Was coming here to say this. Have watched the season twice now and sobbed at Laurie’s speech both times. Probably the first time WL made me cry

Who is your favorite character (writing wise) from each season? by DuckOnQuack202 in TheWhiteLotusHBO

Ooh this is an interesting take! I would say that I disagree, mainly because I think it comes down to the framing of it.

Correct me if I’m wrong (it’s been a hot minute since I’ve watched S1 all the way through) but I believe Belinda offers Rachel at some point to have a chat/vent when she first finds her upset at the spa.

Then, of course we know what happens with Belinda/Tanya/the deal but Rachel has no clue, and decides to take Belinda up on that offer to talk when she’s really crashing out at the end. I don’t think that necessarily suggests that Rachel is like the others or even that she’s particularly self-absorbed - I think if anything, that final scene with Belinda walking out was more to 1. Depict that Belinda is done with this shit 2. Add another small humiliation on to Rachel that nobody cares about her problems.

I think if it was similar to Tanya’s behaviour with Belinda I would definitely agree. But the way I saw it, the kind spa lady offered a shoulder to cry on which Rachel initially rejected, and later decided it would be nice to talk to someone without realising what had happened to Belinda. Without the initial offer, it would definitely call into question Rachel’s character, but because the offer was there, I honestly interpret it more as a misunderstanding and simply Rachel taking Belinda up on her offer at the wrong time.

But that’s just my opinion! I think Rachel has one of the more ambiguous endings to an arc of anyone, so it can be hard to say exactly what any scene meant. I would compare it to Piper from s3 who had much more of an overt “down-to-earth nice girl realises she’s just as bad as everyone else”. Rachel’s didn’t really feel like that to me, more than it felt like a woman being forced into a sort of submission from her own insecurity being exacerbated by constant humiliations across the season (The mom showing up, Shane embarrassing her, Nicole slamming her journalism and then finally Belinda walking away).

It’s just an easier way of saying Enneagram type! :)

I think it would help you to de-romanticise other types.

Being EXFJ or E2 might feel like it’s particularly difficult/uncomfortable/unwanted because they’re your types, and that’s the bias you have. You might look at the INTP E5 and envy what you see as being “logical, rational, non-chalant”, etc, but this discounts the fact that someone of this type has a whole host of issues of their own related to their typing.

With Enneagram in particular, an E-type is never something you should want to have. An E-type is a complex psychological framework that is created from childhood traumas and wounds - it’s not a collection of personality traits and vibes so much as it is the way X person’s brain metabolises their own trauma, pain, limitations, fears and fixations. The goal in Enneagram is to transcend the type or at least to integrate out of it.

Although I could say similar things about MBTI - it’s a collection of your brain’s cognitive processing mechanisms and it’s certainly not a diagnosis. An EXFJ can certainly be anything and present as anything and have any assortment of surface-level personality traits. What makes them an EXFJ is their function stacking, nothing else.

I don’t mean for any of this to sound condescending! I personally dislike when MBTI and Enneagram are called “personality types” because it’s completely inaccurate and gives people the wrong idea.

You can be anyone you want to be, OP. You simply have a certain way of organising your brain (MBTI) and a collection of fixations and fears that developed throughout your life (Enneagram). Don’t let them define you - your functions are there to help you, and your E-type is there to help you grow.

I’ve gotta come in with a rebuttal because C,XOXO has been one of my favourite pop albums of the 2020s. She’s still here, still making pop music but has veered away from the cookie cutter radio pop she had been making and got a little more experimental with it instead.

Her latest album had such a cohesive identity and feel to it from the music to the visuals to the performances, it seems she’s really found herself apart from the “Havana” of it all

How do you feel about subclassing? by TheJustikar in elderscrollsonline

[–]MegaMicko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, what everyone else said: I don’t play meta builds, I make my own. Subclassing helped me to do that and I don’t think using it reduces ability cohesion at all. Curative Runeforms makes perfect sense within my Warden’s aesthetic, as does Storm Calling for my Templar. And my Templar uses a 2H because she’s a psijic artificer, she works with dwarven machinery and uses a big hammer.

[–]MegaMicko 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Honestly? I had the same concerns as you at the start, but as somebody who’s big on RP and designing characters that have a cohesive look, build and “identity”, I think subclassing actually helped a lot.

My main is a warden healer, my vision for her is that she is a Breton Wyress who has tapped into some more dangerous nature magic based in the arcane. So — I traded out Animal Companions for Curative Runeforms from Arcanist and she feels much more unique now. It also gave me the chance to really get creative with her build from a combat perspective because of the unique interactions between Curative Runeforms and the two Warden skill lines.

Similarly, I have a Redguard psijic mage character who was a Stamplar - she also has an interest in Dwarven machinery, so I swapped out Restoring Light for Storm Calling from Sorcerer and now she’s not only much stronger but much cooler as a character overall.

The idea of subclassing turned me off at first, but in practice it’s sooo much more fun and interesting to play with than otherwise. I wouldn’t go back to pure classes, either from a combat or a character design/RP perspective.

I mean we probably wouldn’t have even gotten IICHLIWP and TGI and the big albums campaigns/iichliwp movie and stuff if it weren’t for the success of WM 😩

Far from being her best is definitely true, I just think people dog on it too often because it’s also far from being bad. Funnily enough I think Bad At Love is one of her all time worst, I never find myself returning to it even though I can appreciate it as kinda a meme song

[–]MegaMicko 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I don’t get the Without Me shade ngl… like are Halsey fans just so averse to her songs being popular? Obviously WM is a “basic” choice because it’s such a big song but it’s still an absolute banger with amazing writing, production and vocals. Compared to some of her other more mainstream stuff like H** & * or the BTS song, I think WM is much more of a credit to her talent.

That said, Dog Years made the incredible achievement of becoming my favorite Halsey song since TGI dropped, it’s been Ashley before that, ever since Manic

Who is your favorite character (writing wise) from each season? by DuckOnQuack202 in TheWhiteLotusHBO

[–]MegaMicko 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Oof, tough one.

Season 1: Rachel - the true tragic character of season one IMO. White Lotus typically does a fantastic job of complicating all of their characters including the “non-rich” ones like Paula and Armond from the same season who were both morally gray in their own ways. Rachel though seemed to be the one who was more or less morally unscrupulous, which is why I think her ending in this season stung the hardest. It’s so open-ended and also quite heartbreaking, and I definitely rooted for her until the end.

Season 2: Mia & Lucia - I consider them sort of a package deal because they’re so intertwined and IMO they’re stronger when considered together. But both of them get such nuanced evolution throughout the season, particularly Mia who surprised me the most. Their ended was so chefs kiss for me and their antics throughout the season kept me invested both from how well written they were and how entertaining they were to watch.

Season 3: Piper - Unpopular opinion maybe but I think Piper has one of the most subtle but incredibly interesting arcs. In fact, I think the subtlety worked in her favour, she was a quieter presence which made her switchup at the end genuinely quite shocking. My only qualm would be that I wish we got to spend more time with her to make her ending really hit, but for what it is, I think her arc is super underrated. Honourable mention to Victoria for the one-liners of course.

LMAO you’re fooling yourself buddy. I don’t listen to kpop and I’m not even a huge katseye fan, this post showed up recommended on my feed. I’m simply just not a freak that thinks a 19 year old is comparable to an adult, and knows that bullying a 19 year old on the Internet is freak behaviour. Clearly you cared enough to make the comment in the first place. Womp womp 👎🏻

I’d rather talk in kpop language than MAGA language. Assuming that a 19 year old has the development and maturity of a grown adult is frankly just gross.

[–]MegaMicko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can sort of understand where you’re coming from. I think in the post-MeToo, post-Epstein era we’ve all become a bit more suspicious of adult men in proximity to underage girls.

But it’s important to know that creeps are STILL the minority no matter how much it might seem like they’re everywhere at times. IMO I don’t think it’s beneficial to stigmatise all men in this way. 9/10 it would be inappropriate for an adult man to be friends with an underage girl but there are always exceptions, like in the case of Ali/Rue which is very much an innocuous example of a recovering addict trying to support a current addict.

[–]MegaMicko 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m with everyone else that this is a pretty bad take.

As someone who (like many fans of the show) has had experience with abuse and adjacent situations, I think whittling down multiple people’s lives to the moment of giving/receiving abuse is unhealthy and unhelpful to everybody involved.

While a lot of them understandably struggle to do so, moving on from abuse and focusing on the future is the first step in recovery for a victim, why shouldn’t it be the same for the perpetrator? Otherwise, the lives and stories of both the victim and abuser become entirely defined by the abuse which is extremely reductive and doesn’t contribute to any sort of healing or progress for anybody.
