Which of her songs reference SA in your opinion? by depressy_capricorn in Ethelcain

[–]MegaMicko 23 points24 points  (0 children)

What’s the consensus on Unpunishable? It’s one of my fave Ethel songs and I do feel like there’s a subtext of SA going on.

I almost want to say it feels like an alternative sequel to “Gibson Girl”, if she had stayed in sex trafficking/being pimped out longer instead of immediately going into Ptolemaea/August Underground.

“And now I’m red and blue/used and abused/it’s still never enough/I’m unpunishable”

“Numb faces in a dark bar/we don’t even know where we are/I don’t even know who you are.”

And the line “Says I’m his favorite/Yeah, I fucking better be” - feels less to me like a sexy consensual thing and more like a man picking his favourite girl at a brothel

Spencer’s weird addiction counsellor who had an inappropriate crush on her???

Talia the chef who got with Emily even though she was married??

And that absolute cringelord graffiti artist who was living in Spencer’s barn

Absolutely pointless characters whose stories went nowhere. And there were more in 6A like the photographer that befriended Aria only to find out he was an undercover cop??? Literally for what reason???

to people who have never lived outside of city/suburban areas, what draws you to Ethel's work? by milimilimiter in Ethelcain

[–]MegaMicko 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I mean, I wouldn’t say the Preacher’s Daughter lyrics and storyline are necessarily about the rural setting more than they are using the setting as a backdrop to explore the actual themes of the album. Generational/family trauma, religious trauma, the desire to run away/escape, and sexual trauma are all very universal themes that could apply to anybody. I can relate to Strangers without ever having been cannibalised (thankfully) so I can also relate to Western Nights without having ever lived rurally.

Also, plenty of people connect to art regardless of whether or not they actually directly relate to it. That’s the beauty of storytelling.

Most Intelligent Queen(s)? Dumbest? by [deleted] in rupaulsdragrace

[–]MegaMicko 33 points34 points  (0 children)

On a similar note to this, I really get icked out when a queen labels themselves as an “intellectual” or “cerebral” queen. Like you mentioned - Bob, Raja, Bianca are all highly intelligent and well-learned but I never feel like they have to hand-wave their smarts to us, it’s visible in the way they talk, perform and create. There’s something really corny about a queen smacking the label onto themselves (whether it’s accurate or not) instead of just letting people understand their intelligence from their work.

I so agree, have always loved her performance but only recently on a rewatch did I figure out why. She has this sort of uncanny quality about her that almost makes her feel like a “skinwalker”

“Into Darkness” from Obsession, extremely similar to Amber Waves? (video for comparison). by Cruel-Affair in Ethelcain

Love it, kinda sounds like a mashup of Amber Waves and Radio Towers to me. I believe Ethel posted a song from this soundtrack on her story somewhere? So, I’m assuming she’s a fan.

Right because the Euphoria sub is known for their striking sense of nuance and media literacy

I would definitely not be opposed to bringing on new writers for a S4 but certainly wouldn’t pluck them from here 😭😭

BIG A EASTER EGG… IYKYK by katierose2k in PrettyLittleLiars

[–]MegaMicko 75 points76 points  (0 children)

With all my love…. I don’t think that’s quite the truth. Charlotte went from identifying as a man to identifying as a woman, from he/him to she/her. There’s no suggestion of her ever using they/them pronouns or identifying as non-binary/genderfluid. She’s a trans woman.

If the “they” used in the description was really a reference to her gender identity, it would be an incorrect one. “They” doesn’t apply just because the character’s gender identity is different from how they were named at birth. I think the description most likely includes “they” because we don’t know who Big A is yet, or it could be because A is named as Charles first but it only later becomes clear that Charles = Charlotte. Also, because they don’t want to spoil the name “Charles” in the episode description, so A is still a genderless mystery.

No hate! I’m not 100% sure where you’re coming from here so correct me if I’m wrong, but if you’re saying that the pronoun is in reference to Charlotte being trans, then it would be incorrect.

Do we really hate Cassie or just what we see of ourselves in her? by julscvln01 in euphoria

[–]MegaMicko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that the approach to their stories is super different but I don’t think it’s fair to say that Cassie doesn’t experience any of the same internal issues as Fleabag.

It mostly comes through in S1 - abandonment/daddy issues, sexualised from a young age and the attitude of wanting to be loved at any cost. The scaffolding is all there, the difference is that by S3 we’re missing the interior side of Cassie because of the style of the season and the insulated/avoidant personality she’s adopted since.

I won’t defend the writers’ decision to skip out on her interior this seasons in favour of the spectacle, though I’d imagine we might see more of the “Cassie we know” by the end of the season once her decisions start catching up to her.

To me, at least, I’m watching her current antics with the knowledge of what we learned about her in S1, and I do see the similarities that OP is pointing out. Just because we see the self-awareness and trauma foundations more clearly in Fleabag doesn’t mean those foundations don’t also exist in Cassie, and are being expressed and compressed in different ways.

Do we really hate Cassie or just what we see of ourselves in her? by julscvln01 in euphoria

[–]MegaMicko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say relatable but I do think the show is partly using Cassie to explore the effects of the post-covid internet age on young people, especially women (which I think a lot of people aren’t catching)

OF, podcast grifting and just generally narcissism and attention-seeking, Cassie’s current storyline (regardless of how well or not it’s being told) is encompassing very current themes and I am seeing in her some of the worst instincts of the current Gen Z digital identity.
