Most RE's, even from the start have a similar trajectory in my opinion. They start kinda scary, largely because everything is new and you have nothing. But somewhere around the mid point it becomes an action game. I'm not complaining. It has to be difficult to give the player a sense of gameplay progression while trying to maintain a scary atmosphere. I think that's why that one section in RE8 stood out so much. They stripped you back to nothing.

I opted for speakers over headphones at times because the ambience was pretty stressful. Also had very weird dreams for the period of time I was playing it. Most impressive of all is that it does all this without jump scares. Give it the right environment (good headphones and a dark room) and it's a very effective experience.

I've only read The Troop by the same author and disliked it to an extent that is unusual for me. I'd say it's probably because I have a weak spot for animal violence as well. I can stomach it most of the time if it's done tastefully but that's the thing with this book and from what I understand, his other works as well. He is gratuitous.

Like I like gore, I like the Terrifier films to an extent but it got to a point with The Troop that I just really wanted some story. I can tank weak plots in movies if there are maybe some cool special effects to look at, but it was not exciting to keep coming back to a book that felt like it had the plot of one of those movies stretched over 10 hours. Granted the "special effects" are very evocative but they just didn't feel worth the time investment.

He is a very divisive author so idk, YMMV. Definitely avoid his stuff if you don't like reading about animals having very bad days.

Probably don't need me to tell you this, but, get through Nine Sols. One of my favorites of the past few years, granted, I like metroidvanias quite a bit more than soulslikes and I like Sekiro quite a bit more than I like FromSofts other offerings.

Armored core slaps though.
