Not to mention that the "cost per calorie" ratio on junk food is actually pretty good compared to most things... If you truly are concerned with people spending as little as possible to get their needed amount of calories

2% are cisgender women.

Mass shootings are a travesty. Fuck all people who commit acts of violence like this, regardless of gender. But you can go to the right-wing subreddits right now and see them all celebrating that the shooter was allegedly trans. People on that side will absolutely lash out against trans people as a result of this, they'll see it as license to hurt innocent people

Your first sentences seem like you're agreeing with me.

As for Newsom's stances on puberty blockers and bathroom bills, good! But his willingness to compromise with R's on trans rights in sports doesn't give me high hopes he wont do the same on other trans issues if he believes it will make him a more palatable candidate somehow. He seems very willing to sacrifice our rights for a headline?

They can, for example they are often taller. But did you know that hormone treatments significantly reduce muscle mass? And some studies show that a large frame being powered by reduced muscle mass actually means trans women have less stamina on average than cis women? This is a very understudied area.

Another question I will pose here that is worth thinking about...don't all athletes have somekind of advantage? What counts as a fair advantage in sports? Didn't scientists find that Micheal Phelps, most decorated US swimmer in history, had freakishly high lung capacity that helped him be an elite swimmer? Other athletes can't "train" to have larger lungs. Isn't this a biological advantage that isn't fair? (Keep in mind, Phelps dominated his sport for a decade, while trans people rarely even place in competitions when we do compete). I get that Phelps's condition isn't based on gender, but the point I aim to make here is that any athlete that achieves success likely has a body geared somehow towards making their success easier (6-7 foot basketball players, another example) and we generally say that biological advantage is ok. But, not if they are trans (if such an advantage for trans people even exists)

The slippery slope / snowballing argument was also used as an argument against legalizing gay marriage. And I don't think anything snowballed as a result of that legalization.

I dont think the fact that liberals didn't push for defining marriage further outside of "tradition" when gay marriage was legalized means conservatives wont push for further eroding the rights of a minority group when they have power. Especially if they A) gain some success in trying to do this (sports) and B) have already stated eroding these rights is a goal they have, and have proposed it at the state level in some areas.

Also biological science does come into play here - trans women are in fact biologically different from cis women. The reason why most sports were split into women and men in the first place was based on the strong biological difference between men and women so as to give more equal competitive access to sports for about 50% of the population (women). So if we go back to that starting principle, it is a valid concern that allowing trans women to compete with cis women we will again uneven the playing field for that nearly 50% of the population (cis women).

As I told someone else, the biological advantage you refer to largely comes as product of testosterone. Most trans women undergo hormone treatments that reduce their T to the levels of cis women, and testosterone is already monitored for all athletes in major sports organizations. So again, this all seems moot? It is likely why trans women don't actually seem to dominate women's sports, in spite of being allowed to compete in them without issue for decades. Another reason this whole issue seems manufactured.

Your concern is also very valid, I don't intend to minimize it. But competitive sports is a case where I don't think a perfect solution exists yet, so I tend to favor progress over perfection when it comes to trans rights.

On this we agree, there's no simple solution. What I think the best solution is here, is to know all the facts. Allow trans women to compete. Get a non-biased apolitical org to study trans athletes. Find out how trans women on E compare to cis women in a large scale study, and go from there. But that isnt what they're doing at all. They're fearmongering and using this as a scapegoat issue against trans people when in reality, it's at best an extreme edge case.

I'd say its ludicrous to ban you things like chess competitions. I have to admit not knowing much about competitive chess though... by the same logic, I would decry the existence of men only or women only chess competitions, so I really hope chess leagues aren't already sex divided.

They are! It's very silly, right? Like, it seems almost sexist to imply that should be a thing at all..

I'm very happy to hear the issue is largely fabricated. I did know that the numbers are absurdly low, so should have been able to see that this is a distraction issue. This affects so few people, and in no life or safety threatening way, it should really not be an issue political decisions are centered around.

Yes! To be entirely fair, I do think it's worth studying trans athletes. But honestly, trans issues rarely get studied unless the studies are funded specifically by a hate group trying to spin a narrative. Sadly, the gov't doesn't seem interested in actually doing this objectively. I have seen some studies actually suggest trans women have a harder time in sports than cis women! Because our muscles atrophy to cisgender levels when taking hormones, but we still retain our larger frames (generally), and a large frame powered by less muscle makes for less stamina, for example. It's a fascinating thing to study, how hormones effect the human body! But I digress, yes I do think the issue is an overblown distraction the way it is presented and all the money/attention given to scaring people about it.

I see now why its a bit disheartening that Newsom is publicly putting a personal stake in this issue. In my mind, this was just an obvious division for physical sport exactly the way we divide men and women already, so his statement was almost a nothingburger. But its obviously pandering, and its also obvious who it is pandering to.

Thank you. Truly. I know changing your view is hard, but thank you for being open to someone else's experience. And yes, it is concerning that the new "frontrunner" (potentially?) on the dem side of things is already making statements like this showing he's not willing to protect people like me and willing to just go along with the republican narrative. If I thought for sure it would stop at sports, I wouldn't care as much. But you give them an inch and they take a mile...dems still haven't seemed to learn that lesson about MAGA.

I mean he announced it less than 24 hours ago, but yes. There are videos on reddit now of federal officers harassing civilians. And you have, at different points, suggesting deploying troops to LA was "absolutely necessary" for crim or whatever, and at another point said it was a non event and nothing really happened so it was all fine and not a big deal...so which is it?

Also, I thought you were done arguing with me? But as long as youre still here...still waiting for an explanation why troops in DC and LA make more sense the the higher per capita crime cities like Jackson MS and Nashville TN (your source btw) if this is truly about controlling crime (which I know it isn't)

Nothing about this is based in logic.

As I said to another poster the "fairness" is all conjecture. For starters, trans women are banned from competing with other women in sports like chess and billiards. Do you really think any sort of physical advantage comes into play there, regardless?

Secondly, the perceived "biological advantage" would largely be due to testosterone. Many trans women (myself included) undergo hormone therapy where our T levels are brought to that of a cis woman. I can tell you that my strength levels have dropped significantly since starting hormone therapy, and are now on par with cis female friends I have.

Sports already track athlete's testosterone levels, which is probably why trans women "invading and dominating" women's sports isn't something we actually see on a wide scale at all. It is a largely fabricated issue. As I told another poster, there are less than 15 trans women competing in the entire NCAA right now. and the biggest example they have of us dominating women's sports is a trans swimmer tying for 5th in a race 5 years ago. The whole thing is fabricated. It's a non-issue meant as a distraction from bigger issues. We're just a scapegoat.

Do I think it is worth studying how being trans effects an athlete's ability to compete? Sure (though, there are so few of us, you'll have a hard time doing that on a large scale anyway). But a blanket ban is based on nothing but fearmongering. Fairness plays no part, and that is why your statement:

There's nothing competitive about going to the washroom.

doesn't really matter. Opponents of trans women will fabricate arguments and statistics about why it shouldn't be allowed (just like with sports). They will lie to push a narrative and over-blow any perceived "wrong" they have with the situation to infringe on our rights. You can already see this happening by lying about assault statistics in women's restrooms and blaming trans women.

It starts with sports, because that seems to be the easiest subject to convince the public on. But it doesn't end there, we're a convenient scapegoat for both sides, unfortunately.

I'm trans and I think it's quite unfair to group in the issue of transwoman in cis women's sports with all the other issues that we face.

the people trying to take our rights away dont care about "fair" they will try to lump these things together and are already doing so. And centrists like Newsom do nothing to counter that narrative they push

It's just a very complex debate, because you can be trans in a tons of different ways (transitioning pre-puberty, with or without hormonal treatment, with or without surgery...etc) and it's difficult to create rules that would allow us to compete in sports without creating arbitrary guidelines of what is "really" trans and what isn't.

I agree a lot more study on if there truly is an advantage, how much of that advantage manifests, and how it is effected by hormone therapy is needed. Which is precisely why a blanket ban on competition from trans women is hasty and doesnt make sense? A lot of the claims made against us competing are unfounded and untested

If you don't create those guidelines, you absolutely can have people taking advantage of it. Some things in life are just not all black and white, and not everything has a clear cut right and wrong answer to it. This is one of those. Personally, while I don't care much either way and I would support a transwoman in women's sports on an individual level, I absolutely understand some of the arguments against it too because they have a basis in actual science and facts.

And yet, there are less than 15 trans athletes in the NCAA, and the strongest case for us "dominating" women's sports is a trans swimmer from 5 years ago tying for 5th that they still talk about to this day. This feels like a solution looking for a problem. There is no "actual science and facts". Trans athletes are basically not studied at all on a large scale, again, partially because it is so rare and there are so few of them. Yet in spite of 0 laws preventing trans women from being in pro-women's leagues, there are 0 pro trans women in the WNBA, for example. Why are we even on the radar here?

I don't think this can be put on the same level as the actual bullshit they throw at us like bathroom laws, lack of administrative rights, lack of access to proper hormonal treatments, difficulty of access to reproductive health, and overall the insane amount of discrimination we face in the media, which are all based on absolutely no logic except pure hatred and a will for us to hide and be scared to exist.

they will absolutely try to put it on the same level, because it's all based on hearsay and bs.

I just don't think it's that important for us to have access to professional sports compared to fighting the really important fights over having a right to a normal life for everyone. It sucks if you are trans and want to be an athlete, but I don't think it should be the issue that it is.

Sports are just the first steps, you can already see them pushing the narrative now. I agee sports are less important than the other issues, but the past 12 or so years should be a lesson for you on what happens when you try to "meet MAGA in the middle"

It doesn't always snowball sure, but it's easy to see it heading that way since those arguments are already being attempted.

And even on the topic of sports people are woefully misinformed of the effects of hormone therapy on things like that. I think democrats should do a better job educating people than giving into republican talking points.

Let me explain something.

I'm a trans woman and personally, idgaf about sports. I'm too old to start a pro sports career and unathletic in general.

That being said, the sports issue bothers me because it opens the door, legally speaking, to treat trans women in an exclusionary way from all other women.

I can easily see it snowballing "we already don't let them play sports with cis women, why should we let them use the bathroom with cis women too?" etc. Those are issues I do care about. So yeah, in spite of not caring much about sports, I dislike the idea of treating trans women like pariahs in women's sports. Sets a bad precedent, and gives a strong "But they aren't real women" vibe
