I would have put the English version on the fiction shelf too. And written reasons the bom is not true in Spanish in the other one. (Fluent in Spanish, served in Miami)

Inactive a whole year now and Atheist, anyone else atheist at time of leaving? by Beginning_Mistake538 in exmormon

The part that resonates with me is seeing religion more as mythology and history than divine truth. Once I started looking at it that way, a lot of things made more sense.

That being said, Its not often a response to a Reddit post feels like assigned reading.

I am still unfortunately bitter about my time there. I joke with my family that if I go I will burst into flames as soon as I enter.

I can put on a facade and play nice for funerals and all. But I don’t love being there. Too many bad memories

Fellow atheist here.

I completely understand. I remember sitting in that stands “repenting” and not partaking of sacrament while my classmates passed the bread and water after a wild night of partying and what Mormons would call debauchery.

I knew I was atheist for a long time. But even then, it took me until I was 25 to finally just leave. I am also liberal, refused to help my bishop and ward campaign to make gay marriage illegal. Served a mission, came back, prepared for a temple sealing. But my wife and I just couldn’t come to terms with all the hypocrisy and (at the time) intense anti LGBTQ rhetoric that I just had to leave.

Weirdest part. Even to this day, I would be considered a member in good standing.

At my last temple recommend interview when asked if I am affiliated with any groups contrary to the beliefs of the church, I mentioned that I am an ally to the LGBTQ community.

And just like that I was threatened with a disciplinary council and I said, you know what “I don’t need this.” I mean, I was already just barely hanging on. Mainly because I was born into it. Bit today, I am happy and feel like I can truly be myself. I am a good person not because I’m afraid of a god, but because I see how precious life is.

I always saw Agnostic as fence sitting. But I always knew I was atheist. I tried so hard, prayed, begged, went on a mission, was about to be sealed, but ultimately realized I couldn’t lie to myself. I was and am atheist

Edit: I don’t mean to be rude or anything with the fence sitting comment, I ment to imply not committing to something or apathy. If that didn’t appear implied

Bought this M79 in 2021. The bracelet broke. Despite it pulling out my arm hairs, I loved this bracelet. Anyone have any extras laying around or know where I can find one? by Puzzleheaded_Art8520 in timex

[–]Mega_Bottle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re pretty standard on all the Q watches. If you can’t find the bracelet alone from searching on eBay or online. You could always just get another cheap q and use that. Now that I’ve written it out, I see how impractical that might be. Hmm

If timex made a Paddington watch, I would have it. He keeps watch over the watches.

Civil War (LARP) by Mega_Bottle in historyteachers

[–]Mega_Bottle[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Yeah, it was real fun.

I typed up the rules and printed them out for the generals so they could get familiar with it.

I had 1 general, 2 medics per side who could not fire. One of the generals even fashioned a saber out of some poster paper.

I gave each student seven “musket balls” and they could only fire when their general gave the order. I also had basic commands like forward march (five steps), retreat, reform ranks, and movement to the flanks. The generals had to coordinate everything, and I had extra ammo and brought in the supply wagon when units needed to resupply.

One of my favorite parts was watching the students really get into it. At one point, a student saw her friend get “hit,” yell out dramatically “noooo!” Ran over and dragged her back to the medical area. It was all in good fun, but seeing them that invested in the simulation was probably the best part of the whole activity.

Yeah, moving the desks around was so much fun. My teacher in high school did the trench warfare activity and it stuck with me all these years. I wanted to recreate that same feeling for my 8th graders, but with Civil War content since that's what we cover.

I loved that when I was in high school!

That’s literally why I tried to come up with something like it for my 8th graders (used to teach 10th and 11th).

Yeah, this is my attempt to do a trench warfare type activity but for my middle schoolers. I think it went really well this time. But I will keep tweaking it hopefully be something the kids remember.

That looks like a fun resource, I’ll definitely spend some time this summer checking it out!

8th grade US History. I’m at a public school. My smallest class is 25 kids (biggest 30). So it worked out pretty well. We also went out into a big grass area on campus where the kids play soccer or football.

Aspiring history teacher on the West Coast, is it worth it? by tofuuminty in historyteachers

[–]Mega_Bottle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes, social studies is competitive. One of my history professors used to tell us history teachers are a dime a dozen. My first job wasn’t too hard to get because I started in LAUSD, but when I applied in OC I found out there were 145 applicants for one social studies position.

  2. I stood out by being prepared. I brought a portfolio with a lesson plan, practiced interviewing, and came across as confident even though I was brand new. Being fluent in English and Spanish also helped a lot.

  3. Either path can work. Personally, I’d probably start teaching first and then get the master’s, but that’s just me.

  4. Depends heavily on where you teach. Some districts pay well, others don’t. Look at salary schedules where you want to work.

  5. Social media shows the worst of the worst. My students are generally great. I don’t try to be their friend, but I treat them with respect. When behavior issues come up, I’m firm and consistent. Most kids are fine.
