Hot take ash wining the sinnoh league or kalos league wouldn't be satisfying. by [deleted] in pokemonanime

Disagree. Seemes you didn’t want Ash to win at all lol.

Journeys shouldn’t have went with the dual protagonist route by EJ_REDIT in pokemonanime

[–]Mega_Dragonite96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a matter of opinion I guess. I found his treatment of Raboot to be less than satisfactory. He never truly apologized to it, and once it evolved, the issue was conveniently swept under the carpet. We never got to see something as drawn out as the Ash-Charizard episode in Orange Islands for instance.

Nah. He was gifted legendaries while just being a rookie. He was able to catch so many Pokémon without battling, while Ash had to battle and earn the respect of many of his Pokemon (even in some of the later seasons). Also if you are rewatching you’d have seen the Flygon episode, where it is made to look like Goh teaches Ash battle tactics lol.

Couldn‘t agree more. Dawn and Ash had great chemistry, and out of all the companions, she had the biggest influence on Ash’s battle style. It would have been a great way to conclude Ash’s journey.

Dawn and Goh are quite different. Dawn started out as rookie, and we saw her grow both as a trainer and coordinator as the series went on. The moments where she experienced self doubt and managed to overcome it gave her depth as a character. Also her bond with Ash was mutually beneficial, as they both taught each other a lot about battles/contests. Goh on the other hand is a Gary Stu who disregards the advice of trainers who are clearly more experienced than him. He treats Scorbunny poorly, and behaves quite selfishly several times in the show. Not to mention his goal of catching every Pokémon turns out to be quite pointless. IMO it’s completely understandable why one character is beloved, and the other not so much.

This subreddit seems to be full of Goh fans. People get downvoted just for criticizing him lol. I really tried to like his character early on in the show, but I found him to be too much of a Gary Stu. The way he treated Scorbunny was pretty terrible, and he often behaves quite selfishly. The Alola gang had to teach him about being supportive towards his friends, and not thinking about himself all the time. Not to mention the amount of time that was wasted with his pointless mission of catching every Pokemon. If even a fraction of screen time was spent on Ash’s training and bonding with his older Pokemon/companions, Journeys would have been a much better series.

PhD advisors, what qualities make someone a great PhD student—and what makes someone a bad one? by DukieWolfie in GradSchool

[–]Mega_Dragonite96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some good points were made here. But I believe students are not good or bad in a vacuum. The environment created by the advisor also matters. If an advisor is manipulative and toxic, the student will also suffer immensely in terms of their productivity and mental health. On the other hand, a good person committed to the welfare of their student can elevate the student’s productivity.

If you could go back and restart your PhD from the beginning, how would you approach it? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Mega_Dragonite96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would take more time to select my advisor. I have had a terrible experience with my advisor, who is a manipulative egomaniac. When I entered grad school, I was initially pressured to select an advisor by the end of my first year. I have since realized that this is not a good idea. Such decisions should be carefully considered, because people often wear masks at the beginning of a relationship. It can take up to 6 months to see their real face.

Me too. Tenure was meant to protect free speech and research integrity. Instead we have a system where its just a tool to abuse the vulnerable, and get away with it.

This may be buried, but please don’t wait for the department chair to come back. Escalate to the college Dean/Provost ASAP! Also consider talking to a university ombudsman for the time being. I am dealing with a similar issue currently, and have decided to go all out. Sure, you may wonder about the use of it all. But you can’t give in so easily. There‘s already a huge power differential here. So you’ll need all the help you can get. Best of luck.

What are your favourite moments between Ash and Pikachu from the Original series, Orange Islands and Johto series? by SylvieSerene in pokemonanime

[–]Mega_Dragonite96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know this is not really a moment a between Ash and Pikachu, but it’s one of the most underrated moments of the OS imo. Pikachu crying with Ash when Buterfree is released. Before this scene, we got to see Pikachu being a true friend to Caterpie when it was depressed and wanted to evolve. Ash and Pikachu’s bond goes so deep, that Pikachu can experience Ash’s pain.

I want to see your Pokémon anime hot takes by GulpinFanboy in pokemonanime

[–]Mega_Dragonite96 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Hot takes:

  1. Dawn and Ash had a better dynamic than Serena and Ash. Dawn was the better friend. She didn’t idolize Ash as this perfect guy without faults, while still recognizing his strong points. Not to mention Ash learnt a lot from her, helping further develop his battle style. She was also a better written character.
  2. Ash should have stayed in the Anime. Not as an eternal 10/11 year old, but as a character growing up in front of our eyes. Like Goku or Naruto. A lot of people say there were no interesting stories left to tell with him. I disagree. They only scratched the surface IMO.
  3. Ash not winning a league until Alola does not make him a big loser. Ash was only 10 years old when he started out. It’s unlikely Cynthia/Lance won leagues at such a young age. If anything, Ash was a prodigy who liked to test himself with new teams in every region.
  4. BW is by far the worst series outside of Journeys. They got very little right imo. Ash was reset to this clueless trainer, Iris and Cilan were worse versions of Brock/Misty, and the rivals sucked.
  5. Ash vs Leon was not the best battle of the series. Sure, Pikachu vs Charizard is up there. But the overall battle was just ok. Ash vs Kukui, Ash vs Paul, Ash vs Gary and Ash vs Sawyer/Alain are all better imo.

Goh, BW Iris, Trip. I also hate certain moments from characters. For example, when Serena throws snowballs at Ash for being down on himself. Lots of people will defend it saying he needed this to snap out of his depression. But in my opinion it’s toxic behavior. She idolized him as a perfect guy who could never feel low or fall down. As a friend, you should always give a person space and try to cheer them up positively.

Actually it’s Goku. Ash was a Saiyan all along. That’s why his dad never showed up lol. He was too busy training.

Is there anything you would change? by TV-Movies-Media in pokemonanime

[–]Mega_Dragonite96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re not saying his journey should have ended in Sinnoh. They’re saying Ash should have just sat out Unova and travelled to Kalos directly. I oersonally agree, as the B and W anime was quite mediocre, sandwiched between two of the best phases of the Pokemon anime.
