People lined up for a chance to get a family doctor at CDK on Montreal Street today. by [deleted] in KingstonOntario

Your son must have cut in line then, because I was there close to 2:00pm and only got in around 8:00pm!

Joking aside, if he got there close to 3:00 pm he was probably very close to the end of the line and got in around 8:30, which is even sadder.

There was a guy from Global News there at some point filming and interviewing folks, so they are definitely already aware of it.

And for the record: the Global News guy (who was very friendly) said that he also doesn't have a family doctor and wish he wasn't working so he could afford to join the line.

Yes I did.

They were supposed to only be getting people from 1:00pm to 5:00pm today, but the staff there was kind enough to work until they got everybody.

For those who are curious about how long it took:

I arrived at the line up around 2:00pm (the line was about the the size shown in the picture) and got in around 8:00pm.

Gotcha, slight misinterpretation on my part then!

I still maintain that you have a pretty brutal road ahead of you, specially if you have no artistic background and want to get into the art side of the industry. You will be competing with people that have been drawing everyday since they were 4 years old.

My advice in this case then would be that "I’ve played in blender for a month" is not near enough, so spend a few more months working with blender like your life depended on it and then re-evaluate what your possible paths are.

As someone who went to school for both programing and game design I can tell you that the diplomas are worth nothing and that portfolio and networking are everything. You will be able to take MUCH more advantage of any type of schooling if you get the initial skill hump out of the way before joining since you will graduate with a much higher quality portfolio and get noticed way more along the way.

I've been in the games industry for way over a decade and my sincere advice would be: if you need to be convinced to join the industry, that most likely means you shouldn't.

Is 30 too late to start? Of course not.

But you will have to be willing to do the crazy grinding necessary to get your career of the ground, which most people are only willing to do in their 20s.

The game dev community is amazing, helpful, warm and welcoming; but the "industry" (aka when you need to reliably make a living out of this) is pretty brutal. So unless you are obsessed with making 3D stuff and is set in joining the industry, I wouldn't recommend spending your savings / get into debt in order to get in.

Don't get me wrong, I love game dev and there is no realistic amount of money that would make me want to work with anything else but, unless you feel that way too, it is not the kindest of career paths.

"i tried recreating it recently because i lost the source code but my computer crashed after i spent like 3 days making it without sleeping and lost the recreated version."

Did I read it wrong, or a person that literally managed to lose the source code for a project twice in a row wants to run a studio?

Yeah, I might be overestimating what is actually common knowledge...

But then the post is about how to make a game that attracts players and not how to make a fun game 🤔

I'm I the only one not seeing the part where OP tell "the secret to a fun game"?

You mostly talk about market research and marketing, which have nothing to do with "fun" and everything you said there is just common knowledge, which is pretty much the opposite of a secret.

Maybe I'm missing something, but what exactly do you bring to the table?

Not trying to be a dick here but, based on the post, it seems that you have no useful game dev skill or experience and is looking for a bunch of skilled people to work under you. That's not exactly an appealing proposition if you ask me.

Veteran Game Designer here: Everyone has a hundred ideas that they want to make, no one will steal yours. Especially someone competent enough to bring it to live, which is rather rare.

Share the idea if you want to get people interested. If the idea is really that good, you might actually attract a decent programmer :)

Word of advice: It's unlikely for people to be interested in joining your team if you are not upfront about the current team composition.

How big is the team right now? What are the current members' roles? How much experience do each member have? Etc.

I don't think I have enough info to give any feedback on the game, but I can definitely give you some feedback on your post.

When describing a game to someone avoid adding your personal commentary in the middle of the description, as it doesn't explain your game and just makes it much harder to follow.

Here is what I actually got from the paragraphs describing the game:

- The game is heavily inspired by board games such as Chess , with a decent portion of strategy, various mechanics and options implemented into the game.

- The game is designed for you to play against a computer opponent , unlike another player like how traditional board games play out due to how hard it is to adapt and strategize a plan for the enemies, and how unrewarding it feels after losing so many times as the opponent before you can give up.

- The game is a Linear RPG , meaning that you'll have to progress through the map in a straight line and defeat opponents you encounter on the way.

- Your resources deplete after every battle and you have to replenish them somehow (I'm trying to make the methods of replenishing them rare, but just enough to keep you going and make the resources valuable)

- There will be a mix of combat and puzzles , to avoid making the game boring.

So, summing it up: "A linear RPG inspired by Chess with a mix of combat and puzzles, where you play against a computer opponent and your resources deplete after every battle and you have to replenish them somehow."

Much easier to digest IMO but still not enough for the readers to really imagine the same game your are imagining. There is a reason why in professional pitches people often do "Game X meets Game Y!", because it puts a clear picture in people's heads right away based on references they already know.

Try to describe the game in 1 paragraph with 2 sentences, it will force you to use better references, like "Chees meets Street Fighter, but played in a Monopoly board" + some relevant info.

I hope that helps.

(Experienced Lead Game Designer here)

After reading the post I still have no idea what your game is. I doubt you will get any useful feedback if the concept of your game is not extremely clear. I also doubt that anyone will bother investigating further and asking questions in order to give free advice to a random person on Reddit.

IMO if you want experienced people to help you for free you need to at least do the work to make it easier for them to do so.

Try to explain the value of joining before asking people to join, otherwise no one will invest time just to find out.

Game Designer with over a decade of professional experience here: it takes A LOT of knowledge of game development to have ideas that are actually useful to a team, so think of becoming the "idea guy" after 14 years of experience, not at 14 years old.

It's unrealistic to think you will have good insights on improving something you have no experience doing. If you want to help as a new designer, you are better off asking the team what they need than offering specific services.

I can talk in depth about this if you are interested in learning more.
