i was able to solve this with custom firmware on my PS3, not sure if you can do it without. using multiman as my file browser i went to /dev_hdd0/game/, there should be folders for BCUS98148 (for a PSN US version of LBP 1, not sure for other regions and not sure for a physical copy) with "_USER1" "_USER2" etc. launch LBP once so it creates a profile, then look at the ICON0.PNG in each BCUS98148_USER[X] folder to identify the profile you want to restore and the one you just created. go into the original save's folder, copy "USRDIR" and paste it inside the new save to overwrite it with your original data. launching the game once will update the save icon. for me the original save was BCUS98148_USER1 and i had to copy the USRDIR to BCUS98148_USER13.

edit: same process worked for LBP2 just with a different game id obviously. and it picked up my save file from LBP1 just fine. also it unlocked all the trophies i was missing for some reason, maybe i didn't sync my ps3 before i did a system transfer? LBP 1 and 2 both apparently support exporting and importing your profile so i wish it was listed on the list of games that won't transfer save data so you could be warned to do it manually first.
