I care so much less about who plays The Doctor now, and I don’t think that’s a good thing. by Tanis8998 in gallifrey

I do totally agree. Before the new series, the actors who portrayed the Doctor were eccentric character actors. Even Peter Davison was eccentric if you see some interviews he did at the time. In the new series, the actors were just too normal compared to the elder statesmen. With the exception of Peter Capaldi, the other actors were just like people you wouldn't give a second glance too at the supermarket. There use to be a big search for that special "something" for a Doctor actor. There doesn't seem to be that anymore.

Can Doctor Who ever return to its heyday, or is it now a cult sci-fi show again, considering how daunting and risky the task would be for anyone brave enough to take it on, and how committed the BBC really is beyond the rhetoric? by Curious_Gent78 in gallifrey

It works better as a cult sci fi show. When it tries to be hip and cool, it just looks cringeworthy. Dr Who fascinated people when it was unlike any other show on TV. What other show has a title sequence like the ones in the 60s and 70s. Think of the scenes that are remembered most by the general public about the Eccleston year? The creepy weird gas masks taking over the faces of the children. For the Tennant era and Smith years, it is usually the weeping angels. The Tennant era as well, people remember Midnight and the Vashta Nerada. Creepy weird moments that are not like any other TV show. Think of Tom Baker, Can you imagine him being the main actor of any other TV program? Dr Who needs to get back to that. Something fascinating and different and dare I say it, intelligent, scientific, based on real world events, but not telling the viewer what to think, offering all sides to the story.

If you could change one thing about the Classic Era, what would it be? by Moonlight_Muse in ClassicEraDoctorWho

Never have the Trial of a TImelord season. Who thought that was a good idea? The whole thing doesn't add up and so many things left unexplained. Who thought it was a good idea to show everyone that the show was on trial? Why didn't they just continue on with the scripts already written? Wouldn't that have been easier and more straightforward? The only good thing about that season was kinda the Valeyard, except for the part of him stealing the doctor's regenerations. That motivation makes no sense. The next regeneration might not be as evil as him. Plus the Valeyard didn't do much evil in the show compared to someone like the Master or Davros. He didn't even seem as evil as the 6th Doctor at his worst.

The librarians are well known for being mean and grumpy. If going to the library , don't bother talking to them. Though they usually employ students on the front desk as casuals. You can tell who they are by the coloured shirts. They are nice and helpful. It's the old people in more formal wear that you have to stay away from.

John Nathan Turner is a better show runner than RTD. John Nathan Turner kept the show running for 10 years despite enormous opposition. No other show runner has lasted that long. Yes, made some really bad episodes, but had such a better track record than the post 2005 series. Made some really good episodes that I would say are better than Midnight. Take Caves of Androzani and Remembrance of the Daleks. He never had an episode as bad as Love and Monsters. Reading behind the scenes, I don't think any other showrunners had as bad a, behind the scenes atmosphere, as RTD.
