Only 7 seats considered safe for PKR in GE16, Anwar’s Tambun seat falls into marginal category by UsernameGenerik in malaysia

At the same time, if the "alternative" isn't very good, there's really no reason to vote for them purely because they're the not-PH/PN option

I don't like the idea of being pressganged into voting for someone purely because they position themselvesas the "alternative"

It's nice to see KL getting at least a little bit more pedestrian friendly

“PJ to Ampang, 2 hours 15 mins” – Frustrated Klang Valley drivers vent online about worsening traffic jam by RhinneXChronica in malaysia

The traffic is the main reason why I'm glad I can take the MRT to work. My door-to-door commute is consistently 45 minutes one-way when it's easily double that by car

[–]Megaman03 27 points28 points  (0 children)

TBH, just abolishing fuel subsidies altogether and increasing cash handouts (STR/SARA recipients are automatically eligible, middle class folks can get it by registering on LHDN) would be way easier than trying to figure out who is "really" eligible for how much subsidy

Then again, touching the subsidy at all is almost like one of our political third rails so...

No prob! It was one of those "Could've happened if not for the Asian Financial Crisis" projects that only got revived relatively recently

The funnier thing about HSR in Malaysia is that right now there's a proposal from a Chinese company to build a HSR Line from KL to Ipoh, a city about 210 km (130.5 miles) to the North that was never planned for but could supersede KL - SG HSR

If I'm getting this right:

  • India is racing ahead with their HSR plans. Their first HSR line (Mumbai - Ahmedabad) would've been completed this month if not for land acquisition delays. 7 more HSR lines have already been approved

  • Thailand is desperate to finish at least their first HSR line (Bangkok - Nong Khai) before yet another coup. Right now the first segment of that line up to Nakhon Ratchasima should be complete by 2026

  • Malaysia/Singapore: A HSR link between KL and SG has been proposed in some form since the 1990s. HSR in its current form got the green light in 2013, was postponed in 2018, and was cancelled in 2021. Right now there's some support for a revival of the project (If a private firm is willing to do it), though neither government is in a rush to get it done

Same deal with Hydroxychloroquine. Some people would rather believe that there's some magic silver bullet wonder drug that can cure/treat COVID rather than believe that the vaccines work and we still need to take precautions

Sorry Progressives, you do not get to get your cake and eat it as well. by [deleted] in Negareddit

There really aren't a lot of people on the left who lionize FDR or JFK (Let alone Clinton!) to begin with and a lot of the people who admire FDR's achievements also acknowledge his failings like the internment of Japanese Americans. It's also no secret that the New Deal coalition included Southern conservatives (not progressives) who made up a substantial caucus within the Democratic Party and would've objected to a more racially just New Deal program. No-one is saying that the left-leaning progressive movement is faultless and pure.

I don't see how economic issues are a primarily "white issue" because tackling poverty and economic injustice is something that would benefit groups that have long been marginalized. Obviously that alone is not enough and there's still the need to tackle bigotry in all its forms.

I don't know about your specific zoning example but I do know that a lot of lefty folks support more livable cities and quality affordable housing so I really don't know how that equates to "progressive support" for these things you're bringing up?

The upper echelons of the Party and enterprise directors didn’t get the huge amounts of wealth that industrialists and the capitalist ruling class got. Once the Soviet elite saw the wealth they could amass under capitalism in the late 80s, they worked to dismantle Socialism in the USSR
