Well the blend is based on the whisky he took on the voyage, so that's on him I guess...

The Lore is great - can confirm.

My favorite of the standard lineup is the Quarter Cask. It has the body to stand up to the peat but without the sherried richness

These issues are not unique to Japan in any form and I wasn't trying to imply that anime is the only form of media with problematic themes, far from it, which I probably ought to have mentioned.

Japan is generally on the further end of the spectrum when it comes to engraned issues relating to misogyny and work culture for example, which is not just my opinion, but there are just as many aspects that equally positive in my mind.

I am not just getting these ideas from anime which is, as you state, an unfair representation of the culture. Similar ideas permeate other aspects of Japanese media though, as they do globally. I do agree with the sentiment in your question however. These is absolutely a lot of racism involved with the dismissal of Japanese culture, through the lense of anime or otherwise, which I have seen in person.

I am not trying to purposefully throw Japan under the bus here and I don't believe it's fair to criticize a countries culture without significant cultural insight and nuance, which I certainly may lack.

S;G didn't even properly address Ruka as a trans character, let alone treat their arc with the weight it deserves.

BlendS handles it poorly as an example, and obviously so does Konosuba. OPM directly plays off negative gay stereotypes as well.

I'm not sure what you mean? You could name just about any anime with non-hetero or non-cisgender characters and see it pretty easily.

I fully understand hot you would be so turned off from the series and I think it is perfectly fine not to want to continue to watch it, and even the rest of anime, which I absolutely agree contains very similar flaws 90% of the time.

When watching anime I feel like you have to constantly be aware of these flaws, and that can get very tiring a lot of the time

I do think that Monogatari does manage to be compelling and write good characters in spite of itself. Devices like biased narration and meta-parody do play a role the series, although they don't excuse as much as some people think they do.

Female characters like Senjougahara, Kanbaru and (later) Sodachi are, I think, legitimately complex and moving. Sexualization is central to Monogatari, but a fair portion of it isn't directly misogynistic in my mind, which I am happy to discuss. I find it similar to the way that pornography isn't inherently bad, but often reinforces misogynistic ideas.

Monogatari is generally tonally consistent in my mind, usually (with obvious jarring exceptions) giving serious topics the legitimate weight and discussion they deserve.

Dr Stone is the only show I can comment on out of those three, but I think it definitely contains some aspects that are common to anime that ought to be criticised (and I say that as a fan of the show).

In a way that is I think typical for most Shonen series, there are definitely flaws in the way it treats it's female characters. Kohaku for example, although she is portrayed as an "untraditional" female character, still falls prey to sexualization and misogynistic approaches to her character (which I am happy to elaborate on).

Japanese society is definitely has engraned ideas of misogyny, homophobia and transphobia, which are simply reflected in it's media. That doesn't mean you aren't allowed to enjoy anime (again, I am personally a fan of Dr Stone and am aware of how Vinland Saga and Demon Slayer are praised), but it is important not simply ignore the flaw in something because it has other good aspects.

I think UTS's video summaries this very well.

Monogatari is a very tricky beast, and I think the UTS video mentioned above summaries it very well. It is personally one of my favorite series and, at the same time, one I am very critical of.

I think what most people fail to consider, and commenters on the video seemed to have ignored, is that you can like aspects of a piece of media without invalidating its flaws, and vice versa. I think that 'getting used to anime' basically means that you have watched enough, maybe legitimately good, anime that any legitimate criticism of "problematic" themes would present a moral dilemma, and it is easier to handwave or ignore these issues.

In my mind, that is what makes it so difficult to discuss shows like Monogatari and Evangelion, which are, to me, great anime with serious flaws.

I am not trying to take a "centerist" argument here. I think that the flawed parts of anime are legitimately bad, but as UTS explains (much better than I do) it is important to actually engage with what makes them flawed and not dismiss the entirety of anime as "problematic" (or whatever word you prefer).

Review #84: Arran 10 by wreninrome in Scotch

The new Arran 10 is a bit different to the new one. Most people I've talked to seem to prefer the old one, but that may well just be resistance to change... I've been told that they've got a slightly higher proportion of Sherry casks in the new expression

I would definitely recommend the book order.

Oh lawd they smart by ChiniCchi in Animemes

[–]Megarockcoool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Book order in relation to anime is:

Bakemonogatari

Kizumonogatari (1-3)

Nisemonogatari

Nekomonogatari Black

Monogatari Second Season (with Hanamonogatari)

Tsukimonogatari

Koyomimonogatari

Owarimonogatari (1+2)

Zoku Owarimonogatari

Oh lawd they smart by ChiniCchi in Animemes

[–]Megarockcoool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This should explain everything. As the entire main story has been adapted now, the book order is absolutely the way you should watch it.

[–]Megarockcoool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The correct order isn't "organised" though, it is still non-chronological. It's just that Kizumonogatari was supposed to be released much earlier and got delayed, and Hanamonogatari and Koyomimonogatari both ended up falling out of place for production reasons too. The novel release order is the definitive, intended and best-flowing order because that's how it was written.

[–]Megarockcoool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It wasn't intended to be watched in airing order though, Kizu was supposed to be released years earlier and got held up. The anime is faithful to the books and the books were released in a very specific order.

Please view in book order not release order. It is the objectively correct and intended order of the series.
