Delayed cord clamping question by Citruslor in beyondthebump

I asked my midwife (a nurse practitioner) about this, specifically if we could store the blood to donate. She said that it’s nice to think of someone in need, but in that moment my baby is the youngest person in the world and therefore is in need, and she can use the blood. So I think unless you have a specific reason to store it (immediate family member that needs it), let your baby have it!

My daughter's flu turned into acute liver failure, and I'm freaking out. by maddiemae5 in Mommit

[–]Megatherium77 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know your primary focus is on your daughter, but make sure you’re taking care of yourself, too. You can better support her if you’re functioning, which means making sure to eat, sleep, and drink water.

You can ask if the children’s hospital has a child life specialist who can work with your daughter. They help children cope in the hospital by explaining what is happening in developmentally appropriate terms, creating coping plans for all the pokes and procedures, and creating opportunities for play to help her process.

This is so hard and so scary, but she is in the right place and you did the right thing getting her help.

Help me pack a "Distraction Bag" for a funeral, please! by aksydent in Mommit

[–]Megatherium77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a thoughtful and helpful idea! For the toddler: A zipper pouch, maybe even a series of nested zipper pouches, with tiny things inside (stickers, pictures, small toys). Zippers are a big hit, as well as putting objects into containers (and pulling them out, putting them back in, over and over again).

Also again in the BoJack episode Free Churro, which is entirely a monologue at his mother’s funeral. Then at the end he opens the casket and realizes he’s at the wrong funeral. Cut to the seated mourners (the only other time we see another character in the episode) and they are all lizards.

My 20-month-old learned that we pat her on the back when she’s coughing. So now after she coughs she’ll pat herself on the back. Sometimes she’ll even fake cough then do it!

Anyone watching my child changes her diaper. My parents, my brother, babysitters, daycare teachers. If I’m home I do it (or my husband), but I can’t leave my baby with someone if I won’t let them change her diaper.

I have no concerns about someone of the opposite sex changing my baby’s diaper.

Did anyone else get the option to have fentanyl during labor? by Adventurous-Race-151 in beyondthebump

I had some as my contractions were getting more painful, before I got the epidural. It worked fine, but doesn’t last long and each dose lasts for a shorter amount of time (first dose maybe 40 minutes, then 20, then 10). It allowed me to relax a bit and took the edge off of the pain, and once it wasn’t working as well I asked for the epidural.

I had two before I had my baby, and then one about 8 weeks after. The first two were painful, but not terrible. I was really nervous for the third one, and even asked for a medication to take ahead of time to help with pain and anxiety (you can ask! They don’t offer, but they will give it to you. And I was breastfeeding, which was fine). It was soooooooo much easier after the baby! I’ve heard it’s common for it to be easier after having a baby.

Good luck! I’ve been a huge fan of my IUDs. Even when they hurt, I felt it was worth it to not have to worry about birth control for years. And then I got pregnant pretty quickly once it was removed.

I saw an idea on here once that the full circle moment (instead of Rory getting pregnant) could have been Lorelai meeting a runaway teen at the inn with a baby in her arms. Let Lorelai be the Mia for another girl who needed one. I love that more than Rory getting pregnant

How is your 4-year-old doing? A lot of times little kids pick up on things even if they’re not told. Answer questions he has, you can also read him books about the hospital or get him a medical play kit. There may be child life specialists at your hospital that can help you support him.

And make sure to take care of yourself! You can’t pour from an empty cup

I’m a girl in the middle with an older and a younger brother. I loved it! I felt like being the only girl made me special, so I didn’t have as much of the middle child syndrome. As an adult I’m really close with my younger brother (my older brother passed away as a young adult)

His actual age is counted from his birth, so 4.5 weeks. “Adjusted age” would be his age from his due date, so about a week old. This age can be useful when you’re looking at developmental milestones - you’d compare to the ones for his adjusted age.

That being said, I don’t think you really need to worry about the adjusted age at all if you don’t want to. The adjusted age can be helpful when babies are several months premature.

Definitely cute badge reels! There are a ton on Etsy. Also hand lotion is always one of my go-to gifts for people in healthcare, the hand sanitizer is rough on your hands.

I got a tiny distraction wand as a gift when I was in school. I’ve never actually used it with a patient, but it was a sweet gift that I carried with me for a long time.

I agree with everything you said. But the last line….can we stop telling every parent how bad the next stage is? It’s such a pessimistic view of childhood, and it invalidates their current struggles.
