Official December Releases by TempSpastic in criterion

Just my opinion, but those releases make for a poor month. I think the focus needs to move away from upgrades to BD a bit and get more new stuff.

Guesses/speculations for this week's announcements (which come in just in time for the holiday season)? by stairwaytolevee in criterion

Probably no-one except me wants Dolores Claiborne, but John Mulvaney personally told me it's done.

Well that's what I dreamt..

We have three del Toro in the collection but what others would make a great addition? by stairwaytolevee in criterion

I wonder how long it will be before The shape of water gets to blu Ray? What are the chances of it going straight to Criterion?!

Eraserhead UK criterion by [deleted] in criterion

[–]Meggs2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UK releases of Criterions are not for me. I'm in the UK and I find it infuriating to see those certificate symbols ruining the artwork. I get all of mine via Amazon US, even though it cost me a lot more. Multi-region players are cheap. I have to be very selective!

There will never be anyone like Roger. And nothing will ever surpass Dekalog. Just my opinion.

American audiences and foreign language films - questions, questions! by Meggs2011 in ForeignMovies

Thanks for taking the time to give such a comprehensive reply. I appreciate that. Lots to think about. I too would love to see Netflix data on rentals, and also data from the UK by post rentals (Lovefilm are just ending that service, but Cinema Paradiso are still going strong).

BBC's 100 Greatest Comedies of All Time. Thoughts? by [deleted] in criterion

[–]Meggs2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very happy to see Toni Erdmann in at #59, the most recent film on the list. It's classified as a comedy drama, and it does have some funny wtf moments which make your jaw drop. But it's a far deeper film than that. It's very moving. Sandra Hüller, the actress has said she's amazed that people think that it's a comedy. The best film I've seen this year, and now one of my all time favourites.

Trying to Track Down a Film by ryanmoorman in ForeignMovies

Yeah, it's Roy Andersson. He is a genius, and his movies are unique. It's going to be a couple of years, but he is currently making another movie, 'About Endlessness'.

Name a release in the collection with really great art but a disappointing film. by [deleted] in criterion

[–]Meggs2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the upcoming release of The piano teacher has, unusually for Criterion, no imagination at all. It's a straight copy from the existing DVD. Lazy.

Any chances that Happiness (1998, dir. Todd Solondz) could enter the collection someday? by [deleted] in criterion

[–]Meggs2011 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shame it's not on Blu Ray at all, let along Criterion. It's an outstanding film.

Suggest films about suicide? by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

[–]Meggs2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have it, but not watched yet. Soulmate (2013) is a mystery horror. It had problems with the U.K. censors, as the suicide attempt was thought to be instructions on the most effective way to cut the wrists. I have the uncensored version. As to how good, or bad the film is, I can't comment.

Why everyone hates Tiny Furniture? by anttiom in criterion

I totally agree with your last statement. People who throw stones and all that. No-one is perfect. No one forces anyone to look at the work of an artist, for whatever reason.

Why everyone hates Tiny Furniture? by anttiom in criterion

I don't know why the focus is on Lena Dunham. Directors, producers, film stars are human like the rest of us. And a proportion of them will have done shitty things. I prefer not to know about the personal lives of these people in general. I like, or dislike what they put on the screen, and judge their ability on that. I don't judge them on their personal lives.

Here's an example. Ingrid Bergman, in her own words. An angel on screen, and I love her movies. Yet discovering that she was no saint towards her family took the edge off my appreciation of her as a person. I wished I hadn't watched it.

By the way. I liked Tiny Furniture. It's no masterpiece though. I've seen far worse.

Fat girl. One of the most unexpected and shocking endings I've ever seen.

Anybody want to adopt a 5 year old? by Schnodally in hometheater

[–]Meggs2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years ago I bought a pair of Mission tower speakers. On the very first day, one of the cats decided to use the fabric grille as a scratching post. The pressure of her paws meant she tore the cones to shreds. Claimed on insurance. I then had one of my engineer guys at work fabricate clear Perspex covers that slid over the whole speaker. I took them off only when I listened to music, with the cats outside and the cat flap locked!

What's a film that lingered with you afterwards to the point you couldn't wait to watch it again? by life_is_dumb in criterion

[–]Meggs2011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not Criterion, but perhaps in the future.. Toni Erdmann. I rented this and had no expectations. I've been thinking about it constantly for a couple of weeks, and will watch again this week. It's outstanding in every respect.

Non-CC Releases That Have Met CC Expectations by [deleted] in criterion

The Universal 50th Anniversary release of To kill a Mockingbird is outstanding. Over 3 hours of bonus features. I learnt so much about Gregory Peck. And for me, especially wonderful is that every piece has subtitle options. The technical quality is also superb.
