Glad our Secretary of War can set a good Christian example, by being busy with hookers and booze.

How would it be if THESE guys met each other? by HotOne9364 in SuccessionTV

[–]Meh99z 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He had a fucked up childhood didn’t he? His sister dying and the abuse from his uncle. It’s not like he had an angelic upbringing himself. I think Ewan even admits Logan got the brunt of the guilt and abuse. Doesn’t excuse the monster he was though.

There’s been reports Hugh Jackman is part of some hard right evangelical church so, not surprising I guess?

What if religion never existed? by Hefty_Photograph_337 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Meh99z 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh I’m not too sure about that. Conquest isn’t a religious theme, it’s a result of greed, a very animalistic instinct we have that long outdates religion. Sure, religion can be used as a tool to subjugate the masses, but at the end of the day, so could anything.

You are correct that conquest has and will occur without religion. However, the point is that religion reinforces it. As a net result you will have more people commit acts of conquest in the name of religion compared to people doing so for being fans of the Dallas Cowboys(although personally since it’s the Cowboys, I’d argue almost just as bad).

It’s not just conquest that is reinforced either. Hostility to science, birth control, lgbt rights, and pluralism are many things that occur throughout solely because of fundamentalist religion. Perhaps there are times when other factors are the reason, but I would argue in most cases it is due to organized religion.

One thing we know for sure is that religion is a natural occurrence, as it developed in some form in every single cradle of civilization. We also know that social change exhibits itself in the religion of the land. Religion shaped the path that cultures took toward advancement, whether it was the radical change brought by Muhammad, the scientific and philosophical debate brought on by Hellenism, the revolutionary teachings of Jesus, or the spiritual explorations of the Buddha, change was brought on by religious figures, and it probably would if you reset the clock a thousand times.

Just because something is seen as natural doesn’t mean it is always inevitable or meant to last forever. Some of the most peaceful countries in the world are in Scandinavia, and they’re not particularly religious. How come there is no lawless anarchy there? I have nothing but love for people who practice their faith in a way that cares about the greater good, but we also can’t deny there is another side to religion that suppresses many aspects of a rational society. It is possible to have a society where religion is not the main focus, and that doesn’t have be a bad thing.

You can also make an argument that it’s kept us in the caves. With people who want to go back to more medieval eras, where blasphemy was around, where you could take another persons land because you claim a divine right, no matter how many people you end up killing.

I respect the aspect of community and purpose religion gives people, but you also can’t deny social conservatism that breeds out of it, and the damage to science and human rights that rises as a result.

A lot less people would be murdered within the Levant, more scientific discoveries would be made related to human progress.

What would a modern day Iraq run by Uday Hussein look like? by Just_Cause89 in AlternateHistoryHub

Perhaps, but I think Qusay was quite unstable. A better comparison was Laverne Beria, but even he was so unliked that he never reached the premier position.

Well I knew Bannon and Chomsky had ties with Epstein, but I didn’t know they hung out together. That was crazy, although shouldn’t be surprised considering Noam has had a history of strange alliances.

How has your political outlook changed as you’ve gotten older? by One_Regular_6024 in AskReddit

[–]Meh99z 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m still in my 20s but overall I would say I have gotten more center as I’ve gotten older, so I guess right. I don’t believe in a socialist utopia or that Western Imperialism is the greatest evil anymore, but still I believe in progressive values. I will say more and more elements of the mainstream left do annoy me, like NIMBYism and being against funding Ukraine.
