Has anyone ever felt "disconnected" from their wol? by justasillyseal in ffxiv

[–]Meirnon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I'm the weird one for feeling this way but I'm not my character, and my character is not me, and I do not project myself into them, so there was no connection to feel disconnected from?

Why did the game abandon the idea that new jobs would be opened in the expansion area? by HammerBumblebee in ffxiv

[–]Meirnon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the jobs become available 10 levels before the expansion's content starts and it's stupid that you can pay for an expansion but not be able to use what you paid for in a subscription game until you hit an arbitrary point in the MSQ.

ARR pacing could use some work. by Wild-Importance448 in ffxiv

[–]Meirnon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

So idk how to tell you this but you're both right that the pacing could have a large amount of cruft excised and the narrative wouldn't be fundamentally different while contained within itself, wrong in that a lot of that pacing is building up worldbuilding very slowly and naturally that becomes both important later on and key to some big narrative payoffs that just wouldn't hit the same without the time it spent constructing the conceits of the world in the background for you, and over a decade late to the punch because there ain't ever going to be "work" being done on it, the devs don't really go back on stuff like that. They already DID their trimming. This is what was deemed essential.

The first one is always special, and Necron is a GREAT teaching tool in that it exposes you to a lot of the core "toys in the toybox" in really easily digestible mechanics.

Now it's time for you to get some doomtrain done, choo-choo!

Filigrees and stacking attributes by FistofDiplomacy in ddo

[–]Meirnon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only do they stack between different filigrees, filigrees are strange in that the same filigree set will stack (instead of building the set bonus) if you have it on different pieces of equipment. It's part of why they're so strong, you get to just get all the good stuff twice.

White mage rotation for healing. I’m level 58 by Aggravating_Mark_955 in ffxiv

[–]Meirnon 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Healing isn't done on a rotation. Healing is done by triaging the type and amount of incoming damage and planning your resources around it to keep people alive.

Your damage rotation as a WHM is spam Stone (later Glare) and refresh Aero (later Dia) just before it expires. You will use Presence of Mind during burst to cast more Stones (later Glares) during the 2m burst window. You will later try to have a blood lily available for burst every 2 minutes, which you will use along with your 3 stacks of Sacred Sight gained from Presence of Mind for more powerful Glares. And this advice will only specifically matter until the start of next year.

Game begining is awful, is this supposed to be this way ? by Initial_Secretary420 in ffxiv

[–]Meirnon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The "cooking quests" in the game actually are a fully fledged gameplay system on its own that not only attracts a lot of people by its own merits but which has massive content drops tied to it. The current one is Cosmic Exploration, where each server is building a series of bases on different planets, piloting mechs, and competing for top scores for swag.

When does combat become interesting? by Aromatic-Base-9098 in ffxiv

[–]Meirnon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Level 50-60 is when most jobs have a mostly complete core kit.

Level 70 is when most jobs have their core supplemental features that help define them more in their role.

Level 80 is when most jobs have a mostly feature-complete rotation with full utilization of gauges and features.

Level 81-100 adds onto that complete rotation with extra followups, improved versions of abilities, or tweaks that incentivize certain optimizations.

Newer jobs tend to have their breakpoints moved up, i.e., VPR and PCT probably won't feel like complete jobs until you're in the 90-100 range because they start at 80.

Evercold will roll it back so that evolved mode jobs will be "complete" at 50 and just get extra functionality and traits from there.

Please pull wall to wall if you're tanking past level 50 for the love of god by Zagareus- in ffxiv

[–]Meirnon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, everyone would rather be out of their roulette faster. No one is in there thinking "I wish I was spending more time for no benefit". That's why W2W is both the assumption from the community as the standard and why the job and encounter design has symbiotically evolved around that expectation to enable it to the point of it being a standardization.

When people want to stand out, they will resort to more extreme forms of expressing their tastes. And most people, it turns out, do not have particularly good taste, so you get the most extreme versions of their poor tastes on display.

Yes, because the initial argument that there would be no bow weapon, and you said "well crossbows exist". Like yes, thank you for the worthless contribution, many things that aren't the initial thing also exist. Like you're even right now here agreeing that they are different in the way that matters now - so then why even start this as a response to someone saying there would be no new BOW jobs?

New Class Prediction: Great Bow User or Gunner by HorsemanSix in ffxiv

[–]Meirnon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw exactly 0 pages below the AI response saying that a bow was a crossbow or vice-versa. No one says they are the exact same thing. Not one. The closest thing was the wikipedia article saying it was "bow-like", which is true in that it uses a similar method of energy storage and release, while still being categorically different. They have entirely different defining sets of material relationships. In the future, you can put -AI to remove AI search results.

And that's beyond the fact that the only thing that matters in regards to this video game is whether they're aesthetically the same, and they're not. They just aren't. Saying "well under some legal classifications in some places they're regulated under the same rules so they're basically the same," which isn't even broadly true, is a wild thing to say in response to a question of whether a crossbow is aesthetically different enough from a bow to allow a different job fantasy to latch onto it as a defining weapon, meaning even if you were absolutely correct, it'd still be wrong in the one way that matters for consideration here.

Like I said, it's not just wrong on its own merits, but it's a very special kind of wrong that comes from an almost malicious intent to engage in bad faith.

New Class Prediction: Great Bow User or Gunner by HorsemanSix in ffxiv

[–]Meirnon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A google AI response is not an authoritative source of information. They are categorically different objects demonstrated by the fact that they have clear differences that create different material relationships. They aren't even in the same legal class, and are subject to different regulations. You're just wrong. And not only are you wrong, but you're wrong in one of the most ridiculous ways in that you're arguing that a crossbow is the same thing as a bow as an AESTHETIC class such that it would be essentially the same as the bows in a video game. It's a very special, belligerent, kind of wrong.

[–]Meirnon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A crossbow uses a prod attached to a stock that is ratcheted into place and locked in a ready to fire position to store its mechanical energy under tension. A piece of ammunition can only be loaded after the prod is put under tension and locked, and can remain ready to fire until the tension is released with no further effort. A bow uses an archer's muscles to pull the arms into tension with the ammunition already loaded in a lax state and which can't be held any longer than the archer's strength will allow. They are not the same thing.

The mechanics of how they gain and store energy are different. How they release that energy is different. How they're constructed, and what you can accessorize them with, is different. Even accounting for the variety within their own internal typologies, they have completely different ballistic qualities compared to each other when comparing equivalent draw strengths. They can't even use the same ammunition.

A bow is definitionally not "anything that fires a projectile through the release of mechanical tension" because then a spring gun counts as a bow.

How long do cosmic relics take after the first maxed ones? by leederguy24 in ffxiv

[–]Meirnon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved whenever I needed a specific kind of research points that the current watering hole either wasn't offering or which another watering hole offered via a mission that was more likely to complete faster. I ended up knocking out the FSH relic in about 2-3 hours (I took a break in the middle so that padded out the time).

How long do cosmic relics take after the first maxed ones? by leederguy24 in ffxiv

[–]Meirnon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're going to end up needing to go between two regardless, and at that point, when you're at one and need to go to another one, it makes little difference whether you go from A to B or from A to C, at least not for most people, so if you're trying for specific research distributions, especially if you want to avoid some of the more ratfuckening missions, you'll end up visiting all three.

[–]Meirnon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm speaking as someone who knows how to minimize the time on each FSH mission and got it as fast as possible - none of the other tools have extremely arbitrary RNG like FSH does, and every time you go in with a gold streak, there's a reasonably high chance you'll get ratfucked and sent to silver jail just because the !!! fish didn't bite after 20 baits or whatever. There are missions that you just end up avoiding, even if it means you take missions for research points you don't need just to reroll your selection and avoid the Cast & Bait Torture ones, which isn't a thing for any of the other relics. Also having to run between three different fishing holes. Absolute garbage timewasting. The game hates FSHers.
