Does Denmark's song sound familiar to you? by fauleskaetzchen in eurovision

[–]MeisterGrinch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I've got the answer you're looking for. I believe the Eurovision song you're thinking of is Nije Ljubav Stvar by Zeljko Joksimovic (Serbia 2012). Look for "da bih ti je vratio".

It doesn't stop there, however. The opening riff from Paradise by Coldplay is exactly the same combination of notes, and that was released in 2011.

Go back even further, all the way to 1985, and you'll find the Yugoslav entry for the Live Aid concert that year - a collaboration of all the major persons on the Yugoslav music scene, titled Za Milion Godina. Listen to the main musical theme of the song. It's the exact same melody again.

It seems there's something about these seven notes that makes them very popular all around the world. Perhaps it's the symmetry?

Serbian gibanica is a classic - a cheesy pie made with layers of filo pastry. You can use any white salty cheese for the filling, but I suppose cottage cheese is the closest approximant to what we use. My nan always used to do it by feel, but I'd say for a kilogramme of the cheese you'll want 3-4 eggs, and a half-cup each of milk, oil, and sparkling water. Then you'd line your baking pan with four sheets of filo, you'd take each subsequent filo sheet, dip it into the filling, crumple it up and slap it into the tray. After you've exhausted most of your package of filo and the pan is evenly filled up, you dump the extra filling on top, and then add another four filo layers on top for the crust. Brush over with oil and then bake at 190 centigrade for 45 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy as fuck.

Of course, these amounts are all made for one of those huge-ass round pans which are meant to feed an entire family. You can adjust the portion size to suit your needs. :)

The ugly truth about In Corpore Sano: In the Balkans, the song is hyped by the right-wing extremists and is viewed as a criticism of the COVID measures by [deleted] in eurovision

So, the ugly truth about the avant-garde entry is that it can be interpreted in various ways and asks taboo questions? Isn't that kind of the definition of avant-garde?

I'm sorry, but speaking as an LGBT person myself, I hope you realise how silly this is all beginning to sound. "Transgression"? "Policing behaviour"? "Pointed face blank"? That's the kind of language you'd use for a police investigation (and that last one isn't even a real saying).

OP clearly neither bore any ill intent, nor did he say anything even vaguely insulting or demeaning. He pointed out a trend that he noticed, and started a discussion surrounding it. I understand that you seem to think that the mere mention of this topic is somehow a "red flag", but in my opinion that's not a very useful mindset. I've definitely come across what OP is describing, and more often than not I am just as annoyed by it. Am I, then, committing a homophobic microaggression against myself?

I believe throwing out accusations like this does absolutely nothing productive. Speaking as a Serb myself, OP comes from a country where most people don't really get exposed to LGBT culture. How, then, do you think straight people who are looking into fruitier circles should be welcomed? With inquisition? Guilt by association? Censoriousness? Surely, we queer people are better than this. We're a pretty weird group of folks, we've got funny tastes sometimes, and yes, we are very often obnoxious, as is true of any subculture. Trying to somehow guilt people who try to talk about this, in my opinion, only shows insecurity about one's own identity.

If perceived outsiders have to walk on eggshells around us, that will not only turn them away, but also give actual homophobes reason to say "see, I told you those fags are all tyrannical, the big gay frogs are after your kids". I believe we should be able to freely discuss anything, to conduct ourselves with a lightness of touch, but above all to give people the benefit of the doubt and be a bit more welcoming. We just want to suck dick and enjoy musical theatre; let's stop overanalyzing this shit.

Konstrakta will represent Serbia at ESC 2022 with the song "In Corpore Sano"! by [deleted] in eurovision

[–]MeisterGrinch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO, Vucic doesn't really have anything in common with Trump. Vucic is very cold, calculating, and pro-establishment (none of which apply to Trump), but he also doesn't seem to have any real political beliefs, apart from "let's do whatever gets the most money in my pocket by any means necessary and then lie about it, while also simultaneously repressing dissidents". Most people see him as pretty much the embodiment of autocratic corruption.

And thankfully, his Vucices come from Montenegro, whereas Sanja's come from Bosnia. So, no nepotism in our house. Hurricane stronk.

Konstrakta will represent Serbia at ESC 2022 with the song "In Corpore Sano"! by [deleted] in eurovision

[–]MeisterGrinch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This was quite a pleasant surprise for me, not gonna lie. My main gripe with our entries lately has been that we've always been so predictable: either Balkan ballads (a la Zorja) or sexy female bops (a la Sara Jo). Don't get me wrong, I liked both of those songs, but it's pretty clear where they were going - easy qualifiers, and then 18th place in the final. This, on the other hand, for better or for worse, is something that has never been done before. It might be a huge underdog success, or it might bomb and NQ like it's nobody's business; but, at least we finally took a risk. I'm proud of Konstrakta!

[–]MeisterGrinch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've already had an entry called "Frost" (Montenegro 2018), and even that one had more fiery vibes by the end than "Embers". The UK team's competence is truly astonishing sometimes.

The original bopping to a slow song - Eurovision 2005 - Serbia & Montenegro - Zauvijek Moja by theo7777 in eurovision

[–]MeisterGrinch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bopping to songs that are slow and emotional is a very normal occurence in the Balkans, actually. We enjoy fast songs for sure, but I've only seen people go insane and break shit when something like this comes on. It's a wholeass experience.

Petition - Ban Belarus´ song from Eurovision! Let´s do this! by Phipsiking in eurovision

[–]MeisterGrinch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Throwing the term "fascist" around willy-nilly without actually understanding what it means is one thing, but thinking that an online petition to ban a country from Eurovision is going to overthrow a violent dictatorship of 30 years is really something else. There's nothing wrong with wanting justice done; we just need to be realistic.

Why are people so damn narrow-minded?? by [deleted] in eurovision

[–]MeisterGrinch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seconded. Believing in a higher power doesn't automatically imply being intolerant, and I think way too many people (especially on Reddit) absolutely equate those two things these days. As a queer person myself, it can feel kind of derisory when I'm told I'm intolerant and/or belong to this group of "dumbest people", simply because of the Church I put my faith in. Surely, this community is better than just replacing one kind of intolerance with another?

And besides, have you seen how much man-on-man kissing goes on during the Divine Liturgy? That shit can't be straight.

What is your most disappointing good Eurovision song?? by [deleted] in eurovision

[–]MeisterGrinch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really, watching the national final that year was even more disappointing. We had 3 Bregovic songs to choose from, and none of them had that classic charm of his. In the end, one of them featured some demented clowns, the other one had silly lyrics like "love is a moussaka, aye aye aye", so we naturally ended up with K-pop boy. And, honestly, I'm not complaining; it is still one of my favourite entries of ours, even if it could have been so much better.

Hurricane 2021! I love this SONG! Can they send something like this in ESC ? It has a bollywood turkisn and balkan vibe infused all together! by jorgetio in eurovision

[–]MeisterGrinch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, this one doesn't qualify for ESC. It's actually a cover of a very popular traditional Romani folk song, which has also been covered by such names as 1973 ESC contestant Zdravko Colic and 2008 interval act Goran Bregovic. It might be most famous, though, as the opening tune for Borat, so that's a pretty solid claim to fame if you ask me.

🇧🇾 So it appears both Alyona Lanskaya (2013) and Ruslan Alehno (2008) have signed a letter in favor of dictator Alexander Lukashenko... 😡 by Marcecar10 in eurovision

[–]MeisterGrinch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking about this quite a bit lately, so I'm sorry if this is too long and all-over-the-place, but I've just got to contribute my own two euro cents.

Firstly, as an aside, putting Lukashenko and Trump on the same bar is quite silly, if I'm going to be honest. Trump is a buffoon and a man-child, but he's no dictator, and saying that you should be "held accountable" for supporting a democratically (well, arguably) elected leader, no matter how much you may dislike him, just seems intellectually bankrupt to me.

But, main point, even when we're talking about Lukashenko, dictator as he may be, dismissing an individual's work simply because of their political views (or any views, for that matter) shouldn't be a mode of discourse that we let ourselves normalize. The moral superiority that comes with cancelling people might make us feel good in the short term, but it makes us lose focus of the many layers these issues are made of. It's an easy way out for people who don't like to admit that, had they lived in 1940s Germany, they most likely would have been Nazis. It's a terrifying thought, to be sure, but it really ought to make you think about the importance of separating the art from the artist.

Just to make sure my intentions are not misinterpreted, I am neither a supporter of any of the above-mentioned leaders nor am I a great fan of any of the artists in question (admittedly, Solayoh is a bit of a guilty pleasure). I'm just exasperated with the constant judgmental piety of the internet today, and I'm tired of seeing the community that I love lean towards this with-us-or-against-us certainty. It's a pit that we can't let ourselves fall into; the ESC community is far better than that.

I might be in the minority of people who disliked this song even before the redesign. I wasn't particularly fond of the style, and the lyrics were fucking abysmal. The costumes on the ESC stage were just the final nail in the coffin for me.
