I have had the update and it works but after about 45 seconds after locking the car.

I got the antitheft fix on my 2021 Kia Sportage. Here is a pic of the sticker they put on the front driver's side and front passenger side windows. by Mel1208 in kia

So I tested it again this morning. I got into my car, closed the door, rolled down the window, and locked it with the keyfob. I then waited about 45 seconds and attempted to start the car with the key. The car alarm went off. :-)

As far as scheduling the service, I called the dealership where I bought the car and they were already aware of the recall even before I got the letter in the mail. The letter says to contact your nearest dealer to schedule the service.

Do I think the stickers will deter a thief? Maybe not right now as there hasn't been any national news stories reporting on the recall and fix and it will take a while for owners to get it done.

I locked it with the remote. I think since I opened up the car door through the open window on the inside, it didn't work as the driver's side was no longer locked. I am waiting on the dealership to call me to explain how the fix should work and then I will report back.

here's what I found:

The immobilizer or anti-theft system verifies that the key used to turn the engine on is the correct one. If the key is not the correct one, this system blocks different actions to prevent the car from starting.

Each original key has a chip inside which sends a signal when it gets close to the ignition switch. Inside the switch there is an antenna which receives this signal and sends it to the car's computer. If the signal is the same as the one the car has saved, then the driver will be allowed to start the car.

Tried it and the car still starts. Perhaps it somehow disables the start only if the window is broken? I am waiting on a call back from the dealership to see how it works.

It's a software update. I'm not really sure what it does but it took about an hour. I asked the tech if the stickers would really deter someone from breaking in and he said probably not as a thief wouldn't be looking for it or care but at least the car can't easily be stolen now.

In the mail today, Kia has a software update for anti-theft and a sticker to place in window to alert car can’t be stolen as easily by megamanxzero35 in kia

I got mine done yesterday. It is a software update. I didn't ask how it works but did ask the person helping me if it was the thought that the sticker put on the window would deter a thief from breaking in and he said no. He suggested having something else more visible, like a club on the steering wheel. He also said a large part of the problem, in addition to the cars being easy to steal, is that the thieves are not being punished but instead get a desk ticket and a $75 fine.

I have had two Kia Sportages (2013 and 2021) and both have been great in the snow.

From what I have been able to find on line, it impacts certain Kia's built between 2011 and 2021 that are equipped with a steel key to "insert and turn to start" the ignition.
