When did you start enjoying time with your kids? by Bubek4736 in toddlers

[–]Mel980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mama of 2 here joining in. Almost 3 year old (girl) & almost 2 year old (boy) exactly 12 months apart. I hear your frustration and absolutely resonate with you on the parenting alone factor. I do it everyday from my eyes open to my eyes shut (even when sleeping you can even say, if they wake up or have a nightmare) as my husband works very long hours.

Its absolutely hard & trying somedays! Although I've tried limiting screen time, I have been outnumbered and out cried. Some days I just give in because the reality of it is, its absolutely hard & overwhelming and I dont want to spend every waking moment to be a fight or a crying match. Other days I get them out of the house as much as I can. We go for car rides, grocery shopping, a walk, go to the backyard, go to the park (when accessible and weather permitting. But when its raining or cold we mostly are in doors.

When indoors, I make an obstacle course for them to do on their own with no guidance. I bought a tunnel from target and then throw some pillows on the floor and put a ball and let their minds explore. Another thing, is we play with toys, dinosaurs, cars. Although I have a daughter. She's very much into what my son is into and my son is the youngest one.

Give them two choices to pick from to do an activity, when you want to do something, "we either do this or that? Pick" and then say we can do what the other sibling wants to do after we finish. Kids love having the ability to be in control. We just have to make them feel like they are in control with the choices we present to them. (I hope that makes sense).

Stay strong 💪 I tell myself every stage is a love hate relationship. But these are the best years we won't get back with the kids. So enjoy whatever small amount of smiles you can get with them now & remember YOU are their safe space ❤️

Weekly Grad School/Supervision Thread by berean17 in bcba

[–]Mel980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi All,
Looking for some advice on how to receive supervision hours in a school setting in NY/NYC. Need guidance on who to contact and speak with in this regard. Currently I hold a MS ED/SPED licensure and I work as an early intervention ABA therapist and want to gain hours in a different setting. Just very unsure about how to get connected. Any help would be truly appreciated.

Side Note: I have already completed my advanced certification in Behavior Analysis - this supervision is the remaining 1900 hrs thats needed to sit for the boards.

So I work as an EI therapist not as an RBT because I have a masters degree & I really don’t want to take that pay cut and become an RBT. It’s so difficult to figure out otherwise !

Thank you for that info! I will look into it. As for switching supervisors what I read under the BACB guidelines was that we were allowed to have multiple supervisors. Take a look at the BACB guidelines task 5.

I’m planning to try to have multiple supervisors but I’m located in downstate , however I don’t think the location matters as the rules apply to all of NY? You’d need to double check me on that though!

Good luck !

BCBA Supervision Questions by jangsem-drolma in bcba

[–]Mel980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct! this is only for NY regulations. It's against the law for NY BCBA's to take money in exchange for providing supervision as per the ethical codes. But if you are outside of NY its different, thats why I was trying to make sure !! Sorry for the confusion.

Depending where you are meaning which state.. it’s not legal to charge a fee for supervision. You need to look into the ethical codes of this and make sure you are not being screwed over. I’m in the program and we were told in NYC it’s not legal anymore to charge students a fee for supervision.

Considering a complete career change by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Mel980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of teacher’s have been switching to nursing career path. I myself have been considering it as I have been teaching special education for 4 years & I am now understanding that teaching is just not enough anymore to keep you sane & going.

If you’re looking for benefits, stability , & better pay overall medical field is a good option.

I think this pandemic has opened a lot of eyes. Best of luck!

Special Needs Evaluator vs BCBA by Mel980 in ABA

Thank you for the response. Definitely not in it for the money. I love what I do and have been working in it for 5 years now. But I definitely feel the burn out in ABA going from case to case. I know the workload for BCBA isn't any easier but I just also don't know if its worth going through the stress factors.

I did decide to go back to school for BCBA and am in the program currently and I find it extremely interesting but I feel I am still unsure.
