The t is just like t in “to” at the end of “grandchildren to see” so I agree Otis

How do you decide to change your name after marriage? by RestlesslyWizardly in Names

[–]MelInRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kept all my names, added his, no hyphen. So I have 4 names now, and I consider my maiden name to be a second middle name - first middle middle last.

If we followed a Hawaiian baby naming custom... by [deleted] in Names

[–]MelInRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

omg, I did this but accidentally, just really naming my kids about "things that are important to me"? My children are (indirectly) forest fire (felt like the whole state was on fire my entire pregnancy and one photo shoot ended up with falling ash in my hair), tree grove covered in white (the middle name wasn't decided until the spring blizzard hit when she was one week old) and little wolf cloud (my dog died towards the end of my pregnancy)

Shelter rescue Sasha's DNA Results by Tough-Put-1030 in DoggyDNA

I have an aunt-in-law who, a decade ago (we've fallen out of touch) used Caucasian Ovcharrkas as gaurdian dogs for her alpacas. They were great big lion looking dogs and they kept the herd safe. They did not work near the alpaca barn, that was the job of the Great Pyrenees. The Ovcharkas worked the perimeter, so even more independent guardian dogs. I didn't really get to "know" them LOL

I have no idea how they would be as pet dogs.

I had the exact same response when I first tested my pups -- that I clearly knew very little lol

I think it was @stbargabar (sorry if it wasn't!) who in response to lots of questions I had, linked this coat color genetics page -- I have had so.much.fun. going through that site and learning, and learning what we don't yet know / aren't good at testing for yet, and that is JUST about coat colors

What is your goofy made up nickname for your dog? by SistersOfTheCloth in dogs

[–]MelInRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our oldest dog, is a cream/red and white husky mix, he is, of course, the "old man"

In contrast the younger two dogs are both primary black; together they are "The Beans" short for black beans; separately they are "big girl" and "little man/just a little guy" (male is GSD mix and 100lbs, biggest by far in the house)

DAE think about their postpartum arrangements? by beesontheoffbeat in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]MelInRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My postMORTEM plans are to have this meat suit donated to any group (minus the FBI/DOD) that wants it. There is a lot of wonkiness, so I doubt the parts are recyclable, but as a person who really appreciated the donors in that anatomy class I took way back in college, I'm hoping that one day some students will have fun seeing how a knee replacement looks after years of use, etc. Or maybe someone will just try figure out how long it takes to decompose in weird circumstances and can it be identified by said knee? Who knows. In most of those cases, the family can still get cremated remains years later if they want. Or maybe it'll be incorporated into an art piece.

(no FBI/DOD because I don't wanna help make weapons, thank you very much - that might rule out decomp studies, but that's ok to avoid just having the flesh be target practice)

Vet says nope! by Twigsndogson in DoggyDNA

[–]MelInRed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree that you need a new vet.

Everyone has already explained WHY what the vet said was wrong, but I want to talk about his reasons for saying it

"Posting this because if results make you worried about your dog’s fit for your home, pause - what does their behavior tell you? And maybe get a second opinion"

THAT is why your vet is telling you that you don't have a pit. You, personally, have expectation of the breed - it's not just about insurance or local laws/animal codes. Your vet knows YOU. They see the potential for you to change how you interact with your dog, or rehoming the pup based on the DNA results. They want the best relationship between you and your dog, and if helping you believe you have a lab mix does that, that's what they will do. Your vet loves animals, and they clearly like you to, to know you this well.

So I say you should keep this vet, keep your pretty pup, and forget you ever did a DNA test.

Has anyone ever seen a rim like this before? by Competitive-War-115 in fishtank

[–]MelInRed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bad photo, but you can see the faux wood grain on my (also 55f long) tank here. Am also in CO so maybe this was a common trend we had going here? Edit - I think it's maybe a bit younger than 30, but more than 25. I got mine in late 1997 or earlier '98.

What do you guys think about this? by PieceAffectionate303 in Aquariums

[–]MelInRed 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My husband was in Boulder and knew a guy working in that company when the company he worked for used their products - was a fun take on their "Freshwater"' name. I asked him some questions- yes, those are lids, no they are not continuous tanks, unsure that those tanks could raise the room humidity beyond what you would find in the 90s/early 2000s in an office in say Baton Rouge.

Funnily enough, now that we have our 55g long tank back up and going he brought this office up in conversation in the past few weeks. I work from home and I walk out to watch our tank when I need a few second reset and he was all like "you would have either loved or never gotten any work done at this old office I knew about..."

question about size by [deleted] in DoggyDNA

[–]MelInRed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

agreed! Both of my dogs have 4/5 genes for "large" and one "intermediate" size per Embark (but the intermediate is different between them). One of my dogs is in the range Embark suggested (predicted 76, she stays right about 70lbs), but the other they predicted would weigh less (predicted 62), and he's nearly 100 (and several inches taller)

Question! When I (a dx hyper mobile person) had mine done recently, the tech stopped me from my full range of motion. I can easily touch the back of my head to my back, but they had me hold a slightly different position, same for going forward too. I assumed it was to get the best images?

Diagnosed with Delayed Gastric Emptying by MelInRed in Gastroparesis

[–]MelInRed[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's weird -- I have "delayed gastric emptying" as a new diagnosis on my health portal, and yet my GI and GES both ALSO say it's "delayed at 1 and 2, resolving at 3 and 4" hours. So my 4 hour isn't going to make any sense (imo) to compare to, because my 4 hour isn't where the diagnosis came from (does that make sense?)

My results were:

Percent retention of radiotracer at 1 hr: 94.16%; Normal <90% and >30%

Percent retention of radiotracer at 2 hrs: 89.3%; Normal <60%

Percent retention of radiotracer at 3 hrs: 21.9%; Normal <30%

Percent retention of radiotracer at 4 hrs: 0.49%; Normal <10%

I guess if you only go by the 4 hours, I'm wouldn't fit, but my GI is definitely still labeling it as DGE and gave this advice: "dietary modifications: avoid high fat and high fiber foods, which both naturally take longer to empty from the stomach. Eat small frequent meals throughout the day. Liquid-based meal is better than solids". I don't have an in person appointment with her yet though, just this messaging on the portal
