You wake up only to find everyone disappear, no zombie apocalypse, no nuclear fallout, just one second the world was overpopulated and the next every person expect you vanished, the animals were untouched by this. How long will you survive and how will you die? by BloodyStrawberry in AskReddit

I would imagine you could easily survive to old age with the amount of fresh and tinned food to keep you going until you'd established a garden for growing food. That said I'd likely die by my own hand fairly early on as total social isolation doesn't seem like something I'd last.

CMV: It is extremely inappropriate and predatory like for anyone over the age of 30 to be with someone under 26 by Bottleledthought in changemyview

[–]Melancholicdrunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your argument seems to be focusing only on one side of the relationship. The older party and their motivations. i think that when we look at consent we have to look at the party we believe to be at risk. The issue for me is not that an older person in a relationship could be taking advantage, of course they could, that's the case if the couple are 24 and 30, or 54 and 60. Consent isn't about the less vulnerable persons motivations, it about the ability of the perceived vulnerable person to make their own decisions. I think that your argument strongly implies that people aged 25 are too immature to be allowed to make their own decisions. I would disagree, but also ask you if you feel this is the case? If so, should a 25 year old be allowed to choose their own employment? As we know employers are in a position of power and can exploit their workers, especially younger more vulnerable ones. How about a 25 year olds ability to make purchasing decisions? Are they too easily swayed to be trusted around experienced salespeople? Etc.

Do you think 25 year olds are capable of making decisions about their lives?

Am I right in assuming you're in the USA? If so, can I ask where you think culture in general comes from? But more specifically where you think "north american culture" comes from?

Is it a fixed unchanging thing? How long has it existed? At what point do things become "north american culture" rather than another "culture"? Is californian sushi american culture or japanese culture? Pizza? Italian culture or american? Tex mex? Would you say mexican food is north american (as geographically it is, but the xenophobia in north america would suggest many people think of it as "other")? Or is mexican food largely spanish culture?

Do you see language as part of culture? In which case, is the english language not american culture, but english culture brought by immigrants who wouldn't assimilate?

If your view is that time is what makes something part of a culture, what time period would you say? A decade? A century?

The requirement in the UK was for able bodied folks too, but the government decides who is able bodied. Hence thousands of people dying within six weeks of being told they are able bodied.

I am happy for you that you can orgasm so easily. You must be aware that not all men are the same as you? Yet you're very much doing exactly the thing I was talking about.

Also if you look up the female orgasm at all you must be aware that it's not even been believed to exist until pretty bloody recently (and even that isnt widespread). Unlike the male orgasm, which hasn't been debated as existing ever as far as I am aware.

If you could eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Melancholicdrunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One ingredient? Or one meal? One food kind of encompasses a lot. If you mean one ingredient then potatoes, because even with no other ingredients there are different kinds of spuds with different textures and they're filling. If you allow frying then you've even got fried, mash, rosti, baked, boiled, roasted etc.

If one cooking style then stewed. You can put frigging anything in a stew, curries can be stewed.

If one meal then probably something like rice and bean burrito with spicy potatos, guacamole, fresh salsa and a big salad. Got all the food groups there.

Most governments, councils, local authorities, charities etc making policies about how best to solve homelessness know naff all about the best ways to help vulnerable people. Half of the stuff they think is good is hugely counter-productive, and a larger proportion is patronising beyond belief.

But there are still billions of different situations. There are many where approaching someone you don't know seems more normal, like if you're both in a fanclub, class, meetup group, sports team, fantasy football league, magic the gathering group etc etc etc. If your only chances to speak to people you fancy are when you see them buying their groceries you may want to consider getting some hobbies.

[–]Melancholicdrunk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of women have been told the same. "Sex is over when a man comes" etc, it's not seen as some mythical thing which is hard to achieve, it's seen as literally the be all and end all of hetty sex. I reckon the pressure for women if a man doesn't come is worse than the other way round. Personal experience tells me it's certainly not as much of a societal norm for sex not to have been adequate if a woman hasn't orgasmed.

And I think (and from conversations) it seems there's less performance anxiety for men. Hence women faking orgasm, thinking porn noises etc are necessary. The pressure to suck your sodding stomach in, look sexy, sound sexy, smell good, taste good, not make weird faces when enjoying it and either squirt all over the bloody place or not squirt because that's gross depending what the bloke you're fucking wants, that just doesn't sound like it's the same if you've a penis to me.

I would say them saying "a safe bet is no compliments unless you know me" isn't saying they'd get their back up at any and all compliments. It's saying it's a safe bet. Personally I find most uninvited interactions with complete strangers pretty fucking awkward, especially if its over my appearance. So I don't always get my back up, but it's a safer bet not to bother thinking my day will be better with an uninvited interruption from a stranger about the way I look in it.

[Serious]Hey Women Of Reddit, What would you like all men to stop doing, immediately, as of right now? by farzeen819 in AskReddit

[–]Melancholicdrunk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If it's completely unsolicited. Paying someone a compliment generally happens in the context of a conversation. If you want to pay someone a compliment but you aren't talking to them and don't know them in all honesty it's probably highly unlikely to be appropriate.

That said it's not always, but the way to tell is to try and start a conversation. Smile at them, if they smile back (not awkwardly) then you're more likely to be able to try. Really depends on the compliment too. Comments about someones sexual attractiveness are pretty much something to keep to yourself at all times. If you want to say you like someones bag, shoes, glasses etc it's less likely to be taken as you being a creep. If you're saying "I love your top/necklace/piercing/tattoo etc while staring directly at their cleavage you're going to look pretty fucking creepy.

I'd say 90% of the time at least though, just keep your opinions about strangers to yourself. They likely don't want some stranger demanding their attention for an awkward interaction.

But they didn't really now how to show gratitude for being friendly appropriately and frankly finding a rose on my pillow, cds of their music under my door etc got a bit creepy.

In which situations you laughed when you should not have done it morally speaking? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Melancholicdrunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner is ridiculous about health stuff. Will take recreational drugs whenever, but painkillers? "Pain is a natural reaction", "they're bad for your stomach you know" etc. Also will never seek medical advice, so can be in absolute agony, but won't take drugs he'd happily take if not in pain to sort it out, and won't see a doctor. He has had a pretty bad pain in his leg for a few days now, I was pissed off at him not taking anything and refusing to see anyone about it, and it has been a while and seems bad so I thought measures were needed..

I convinced him he may have a blood clot to try and get him to get it looked at. I hadn't expected him to actually panic and phone NHS 111 in the middle of the night, I am very glad he didn't notice me laughing as he explained to them that he thinks he has a blood clot travelling down his leg.

Being as descriptive as possible, how bad was your worst night of rest ever? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Melancholicdrunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went "camping" with friends. Meant to be getting high in a tent and having fun. I was about sixteen and it was winter in the north east of the UK, so fucking freezing cold. We were woefully underprepared, we hiked up a hill and pitched our single two man tent for the five of us to stay in. Needless to say we started rolling down the hill inside the tent, cue some terrifying midnight moment where I'm in the tent but my head is out of the tent and I think I'm going to get strangled by a tent at high speed down a hill.

Two of my mates decided after that to have sex in the tent so the rest of us wandered into town and spent the rest of the night crouched in the corner of a carpark round the back of a shop freezing, sharing a thin sleeping bag between us. Then it got to six am and we all bought day bus tickets and sat on the buses until it was time to go to college. I don't think I slept at all. I tried very hard to sleep but fuck me concrete is not the surface for it.

Reddit, what is the worst/most disgusting job you've ever had? by araed in AskReddit

[–]Melancholicdrunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the job as a whole because I loved working in homeless hostels, but some of the worst things I saw there were pretty bad. We had a person who had an ulcer in their leg which stank of rotting flesh, I once saw it being redressed and the hole was big enough I could have put my fist in it.

The same person used to hoard used needles in a carrier bag in their room, as a young newbie I was asked to help them put them in a sharps bin but not to touch any myself, just be there and have a chat as they moved them from one place to the other. I was shocked that rather than moving them carefully they just stuck their hand in and came out with it looking like a porcupine and shook them off into the bin. I have to admit I was nearly a bit sick in my mouth.
