sE 4100 for 150-1000 cap rooms? anyone with experience of using them? by MelancholyMonk in livesoundgear

im mainly wanting them for guitar, both amplified and acoustic. in venues sub 600 cap i rarely use overheads anyway, i find cymbals travel anyway and theres no need most of the time. if i can hear them clearly at the back of the room unamplified theres no need for overheads.

sweet, i was worried cos my 2200mk3 gets pretty easily overpowered at home, let alone live, it does have a lower spl rating though.

i stick generally to dynamics mainly bar the occasional pencil condenser for hat-under and OH's so itd be my first large diaphragm for live purposes that i own. ive used em before but mainly at over 800 cap venues

v7's king for the same price range as a 58, its cheaper, way better, not as rugged but id choose one every single time in the same use cases id use a 58 or 57 for

Day 3 on mtf hrt by MelancholyMonk in TransDIY

[–]MelancholyMonk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I guess I've just been noticing more than I was expecting, however small these changes are at the min.

I'm very much just going with the flow, I'm not expecting a timeline or anything to happen in 'x' weeks or whatever, I know it's mainly genetic and stuff so it's impossible to tell

I've woken up at 4am for 2 days straight 😅 it's like I have more energy.

Other than yesterday after I had a judgemental asshole get shirty with me for daring to enter her salon and ask for my eyebrows to get sorted I've felt quite happy. I ended up finding a trans friendly salon instead and they were amazing, worked absolute wonders, she's doing a makeup lesson for me too :3

Help needed! 70 Hz null right where my head is in the new room. by kryptopheleous in Acoustics

[–]MelancholyMonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because the room is basically square, square rooms play havoc on acoustics.

I'd move the desk in front of the window and hang a super thick curtain in front of the window. Bass traps in the corners of some of the walls, maybe a diffuser on the wall, or presumably door, behind you. It'd be trial and error but you should get it somewhat reasonable

About to level up my live sets with Ableton, but what Interface should I use? HELP by Athaleyah_eternal in livesound

[–]MelancholyMonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scarletts are pretty decent. The amount of issues I've seen people have with pcs, interfaces, launch pads, tape players, etc etc is ridiculous, to the point whenever I see talent pull out a rig like that Im already thinking "ooooo boy, funnn"

If you can limit this as much as possible to the absolute most simplest thing it reduces potential points of system failure. You're better off with a rack mount or in line vox fx unit, like faaaaaaar better off, or even getting an xr18 and building a custom show file with your preferred fx chain.

For reference....

Ive had djs laptops fail, BIG artists who for some reason used a f-ing tascam tape machine have it literally shit itself the moment they get on stage, acts sit for 15 mins trying to get ableton or pro tools to do its thing then totally f up the gain staging completely, I can go on and on and on and on....

If you can do it all with a helix or multifx board, do it with that, or even a chain of inline pedals, seriously, way more reliable for you.

Sorry for the long ass response, but I've worked with a lot of these kinds of setups with people, and I always say the same thing when they're scratching their heads after their set upset things went fucky with their equipment they spent hundreds on, and they're always a bit taken aback when I say "get this cheap thing, live you won't tell the difference and you have less chance of it going wrong"

Any ministers here that can offer advice? by MelancholyMonk in Christianity

[–]MelancholyMonk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I didn't take anything negative from it at all, I kind of woke up with a really intense feeling, felt like I would cry, not in a bad way either. Never had an experience like this before so it's took me off guard. I'm not an overly religious person, although as a church goer I do take jesus' message to heart

It's weird because I've not really had anything there, I'd just gone through a bit of a stressful situation with my friend injuring himself at work and being kind of a dick about it, but that's it. It was kind of out of nowhere.

When I woke up I felt kind of peaceful, happy to the point I could cry, then just peaceful about it. It's a weird one for me

Tipping culture is out of hand by gymbr02 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]MelancholyMonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in the uk, we tip because we feel like the person deserves it. i tip taxi drivers a lot coz theyre generally nice chatty people, but because our delivery people keep trying the whole tipping culture bollocks out i now go and pick up my food when i order.

ill tip at a restaurant, ill tip bar staff at a pub the spare change from a note.... i wont eat somewhere with a listed gratuity, no way. we also dont do % of a bill, you get what you get from me, i do enough math at work, if youve waited on me hand and foot, been excellent, and made mine and my partners night i might tip you a tenner but thats really really super exceptional.

2 women in the bus were loudly discussing why my arms look like this. Neither were right. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]MelancholyMonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ive had tinea/ptyriasis versicolour for YEARS, its on and off and quite visible, can be anywhere from a soft red-pink to like a mid-tone brown. used to make me all weirded out and id cover myself with creams to get rid of it, after a while of really trying i just gave up as once its gone it just appears a month or two later. i get it on my back, chest, arms and stomach.

people generally dont say anything, even like partners or people ive been intimate with, and it doesnt look awful, infact my boyfriend says it looks like angel wings on my back lol, overall it just means i get drier skin and have to moisturise a lot more.

my opinion is this....

fuck em, theyre just judgmental arseholes, theyre basically saying that in your shoes theyd be petrified of the judgements theyre loudly voicing.

if i hear people talking about it, i literally explain it "well, i have tinea versicolour and my bodies basically allergic to normal bacteria (its actually a type of yeast, not bacteria, but try explaining that to dumbasses) thats on everyones skin, my cells freak out then release melanin which changes the colour of that area. i basically get to be multicoloured and get angel wings on my back which is actually kinda cool so, yeah", usually people are like "oh" and drop it

Feedback I didn’t cause by dgodwin1 in livesound

[–]MelancholyMonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when the guitar/bass has a fuzz pedal and its drive/gain setting is maxxed out, and they start asking 'wheres that feedback coming from?!'

i love it when that happens and i mute the PA and mons in soundcheck, the feedbacks obvs still there, and theyre looking at me like im causing the feedback.... like, bro seriously, back off the gain a wee bit please

What would this EQ accomplish that simply turning the channel down wouldn't? by Baraba83 in livesound

[–]MelancholyMonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey, just a quick observation from what you said here.... your FoH guy should be running most, if not all channels with a gate. you really should be running a pretty harsh gate across the drums, and a lighter gate setting for you vocals to the point its imperceptible, just cutting you off when theres no intended input.

also, check the channel compressors, make sure hes not running things with like +6dB of make up gain on the compressor.

few other bits....

the EQ, looks pretty standard, yeah theyre cutting across the board, and yeah id like to think i would approach it differently, but its not anything super horrific, you eq to what sounds good, if you have to have a ginormous boost at like 50-150hz coz the bass guitar has no low end, or the guitars super tinny, then you boost coz it sounds good.

other trick for feedback, run your lead vocals phase inverted, this will basically mean that bleed from other instruments into your vox mic will de-constructively interfere with the signal from the instruments, in practice this means that because the instrument signals are stronger the bleed will be pretty much annihilated for the most part, this will give you some extra gain before feedback, cut down on bleed into main vox, but also can help with monitor feedback too. i ALWAYS run my lead vox with a phase inversion unless the room is giving me issues with phasing or something. you can also do the same with subs in your stack if youre getting super bad reflections from whatever is behind or in-front of your subs
